Simchick is our longtime neighborhood go-to butcher. Yes, an actual butcher - not prepackaged mystery meat but hand cut delicious chicken, beef and more. Simple chicken thighs cook up special because their chickens are special. All their homemade soups and prepared foods are low-salt and yummy (looking at you, brisket, Mac and cheese and more). The guys know what they're doing and are so careful with cutting, trimming. A recent fave was a handout, rolled Turkey breast. So juicy and with deep flavor and no waste. Blade steak is an extremely tender cut of chuck that you should try, we get it often. Cooks really fast, tastes amazing and very tender. The store's ambiance is typical of a local butcher - bench, counter, rotisserie, butcher blocks - you know, like from your childhood. I used to frequent this place often as the meat quality is great, but recently they started passing off their credit card fees on to customers. They are not all transparent about it either. They have become extremely expensive and now if you want to use your credit card it has to be a $20 dollar minimum which is crap because they were never like this. The staff needs to learn some manners. Noel (guy with a reddish beard) was not wearing a mask at all while handling raw meat (as in, completely off his face. It was not even a half-assed attempt to cover his mouth). He proceeded to walk around the store from the front to back, when all other customers and employees were wearing their masks. I asked him to cover his face. His response was incredibly rude, giving me attitude, covering his eyes with his mask and then asking if he was now allowed to use his hands. I used to buy steaks there to support a small business, but that's not happening any more. If he had just put his mask on when I asked, then great, no more complaints. Simchick's is possibly the only decent butcher in the neighborhood. And if you go there (maybe a few times), you'll realize it's not just decent; it's excellent. It's pricey, yes, but hence the quality of the meats and the helpfulness of the staff. Also probably because, again, there is no other comparable butchers around here. I love their prepared meals. I paid $12 a pint for some really, really good boeuf bourguignon...the kind where meat is so tender it crumbles and the red wine sauce makes it sort of melt in your mouth. The service here is awful. It's extremely concerning to see the guys behind the counter go from handling meat to handling cash and credit cards and then right back to the meat, without so much as washing their hands! My credit card was surely contaminated by ground beef when it was handed back to me, and I don't even want to think about what bacteria they're transferring from cash to the meat. Furthermore, the service is atrocious. Had been coming here for many years, despite the concerns about proper hygiene and hand washing. Today I tried to place a huge order on the phone so I could pick it up and not have to stand around a crowded counter in this time of social distancing. Guy on the phone said just to come on in, there would be no wait. I show up 10 minutes later and there is a line out the door on the street. I tried to leave my order with them so I could come back later.....was told that was impossible since there were people ahead of me in line. Absolutely awful service. I'm done here. And don't even bother trying to contact the owner. I tried to call him to discuss improving their hand washing procedures....I saw he was upstairs from the sidewalk, but he just let the phone keep ringing. Been a staple in this neighborhood for so many years I can not remember. great cuts of meat, speciality poulty and great prepared food. Staff is great everything is clean and the place is legendary. Apparently the owner of this store doesn't really care about doing business. I walk by this shop every day and have gone in from time to time. I would go in much more often if it wasn't for some of the staff (not all). The rudest butcher is a relatively young and definitely not a relative of owner. That's the only thing that would explain why he is employed there The last time I was in there I needed some veal cutlets. I asked him to pound them (scallopine). I wasn't paying attention as I assumed they would be done properly. He was in a bad mood about something and took it out on my cutlets. When I opened them before preparing dinner I was appalled. They were beyond mutilated. My first inclination was to bring them back immediately. I made an attempt to cook them and they were totally inedible. Threw in garbage. This little fiasco cost about $15. I went in to complain the next day and got total attitude My neighbor buys their prepared food which I have had occasion to sample. Wine and meat, what more do you need for lunch or dinner? The cuts are always good. The butchers are quick and knowledgeable. The establishment cozy and clean. Some of the best steaks I've gotten EVER... While looking at meat, you'll touch shoulders w/ your neighbors, which is kinda nice. They offer bacon, lamb, veal, beef, chicken, turkey, and some organic meats. They offer side items, such as double stuffed potatoes. Nasty, angry people. Theyve been rude to me every time I go in, so I stopped going. My great grandfather was a German butcher in Brooklyn. I have only pleasant happy associations with going to the butcher. Simchick needs to learn how to treat people with kindness. Especially people on a budget who have to ask for the price. I really wanted to like this place. Came in looking to buy chuck roast for a "poor man's burnt ends". Told the butcher I wanted chuck roast, he recommended cook times in the oven until I told him I was going to smoke it. We talk a bit as he trims all the silver skin and fat away. Everything is going great, 4.1 pounds. Then he hits me with the 49 dollar charge. $12/lb for a chuck? That's double their brisket price. This poor mans burnt ends ended up being rich mans burnt ends. Simchick is amazing, one of my favorite things in the neighborhood. They have basically any cut of meat that you could want, plus amazing prepared foods (side dishes, soups, ready to cook entrees, you name it). In addition to stocking basically everything, Simchick also has really great prices, and often has specials on different Prime cuts of meat. Prices are literally sometimes 1/4 of the price at butchers like Lobel's, and the quality is just as high. On top of the low price, they always do a careful job of trimming any unwanted fat from the meat before they weigh and price it, adding even more to the value. The guys there are always more than happy to provide cooking tips and instructions (including some tips that I had never thought of but use all the time now when cooking steak!). read more

I've been going there for nearly 20 years - I try to help small businesses and this is a sad way to end - I even returned the delivery to show them and the staff in the shop were unsympathetic suggesting that I somehow did this. I went in to buy ground turkey in late July. The guy took the order with his mask under his chin, and went in the back to get it. Another guy came out with a tray of chicken breasts, no mask, and no gloves, and started placing them in the glass case. And I left, after telling him why. Thank goodness for Simchick. I say this because they have saved me many many times. This local butcher delivers, lets you create an account, and reads your mind. The meat here is fantastic quality and extremely fresh. the expert butchers cut the meat to your specifications right next to you... not behind the counter, next to you. If you have to cook dinner quickly, their pre-marinated and seasoned meats are a fantastic option, and their side dishes are very good too. if you have any questions about preparation, the butchers are experts in that area too, and they will answer any questions you have. they will even teach you to make something you've never made before. it took me too long to realize this, but the butcher is a cheaper place to buy meat than the grocery store, and the difference in quality and raising is obviously light years. read more

It might have been a good cut for cooking but not for raw eating (tartare). Even worse is that they never answered our emails when we complained about it.
