Since returning to New York, I have been to my fair share of fisheries in and around the city. Some good, some not so good, most fall somewhere in between. This one is a tough call because it is none of those. The fish at this market is fresh, but it has zero character. I ordered two sandwiches to be on the safe side of things and I am relieved I did, otherwise it would be a pretty expensive price point for a bland lunch. The lox, or smoked salmon, is okay, but it has no character. Placed onto a similarly bland bagel, the lox offers nothing to the meal. It is quite forgetful. Observing sable in the business's name, I opted to get a sable sandwich as well. Unfortunately the same principle applies. The sandwich is boring and not boosted by anything else. Smoked fish is supposed to have plenty of character in any sandwich or meal it is in. I feel the fish is just style with no substance. It left me walking out of the business frustrated, with a smaller bank account balance to my name. They do have a few tables to sit at so you can enjoy a lunch if you like. I would not recommend it. 25 years ago, Sables was a regular for me while I lived in New York. I would visit Danny and Kenny and they were so kind and considerate. The food was always perfect. Too many items to mention but the Scottish Salmon is undefeated. Then I moved across the country and now I order through Goldbelly every year to celebrate a holiday. The food is consistent, amazing and always on point. Consistency is one of the most important parts of an excellent business. The biggest turn off was after about 8 mins in store not a single staff offered a hello or any assistance. Appears to have variety but not hygienic for a seafood spot. Can see why this place has the reputation it does. It's a classic no frills jewish deli serving some really high quality smoked salmon. I got a bagel sandwich with smoked salmon and cream cheese and enjoyed it. I will say that the bagel isn't necessarily the best in the city, and I do prefer other places' overall and their smoked salmon sandwiches, but the quality of the salmon is undeniable. Cream cheese was just fine overall. This is more of a quality neighborhood spot than it is a destination spot, imo. Although if I did return I would probably craft a more complex sandwich, knowing that I'd be paying for it too though. The exterior looked new and inviting and as I could do with something quick to eat decided to check them out. Walked in to a clean space, with a refrigerated section displaying an array of cream cheese spreads, salads and smoked fish. As well as eager to assist workers behind the counter. What really caught my eye was one worker in particular expertly carving almost paper thin slices of Smoked Salmon. This had me sold. I asked for a 1/4lb of Scottish Smoked Salmon, plain, no Cream Cheese or Bagel. I decided to stand at a table. Admired the beautiful packaging before opening, then ate each unctuous slice of Salmon. I must say this was THE best Smoked Salmon I've had in some time. To me it had that Japanese Tuna Otoro consistency. At $61.98/lb, it was well worth it. P.S. Pretty decent bagels but not a lot of options, esp for spreads-- as the name suggest they are mostly known for their lox & other smoked fish! We got to sample their lobster salad(?) which was pretty good. I think the lox could be too "fishy" for some people. Good but no longer great. Lobster salad, white fish salad, macaroni, salad, all heavily salted. I am not sure that they actually make their soups. One early morning that I passed by there were pallets of assorted soups at their front door all made by Progresso. When I asked about it, they told me they were left there by mistake. Not sure I believe that. What bothers me most is they will cheat you at every turn. They no longer take off the tare weight of the container when you order a half a pound or a pound of an item. If you call them on that they say they give you extra. I don't find that to be the case. There are some of the staff that put a tip, unauthorized, when you charge your purchase. Buyer beware! Check your receipt before you leave the store. One of the employees gave himself a $10 tip on a nine dollar charge!! He stuffed my receipt down in the bag thinking I wouldn't notice. I noticed! My family and I had the following items: Lobster salad Shrimp salad Lobster seafood chowder Scottish Salmon Grav Lox Salmon Everything arrived in perfect condition nestled in six ice packs. The ice packs themselves were still rock solid - so if they held up you can bet the food did as well. We inhaled everything in 24hrs with Ritz crackers and dinner rolls. So nice to have a piece of the UES despite living in Texas. Prepare for a bit of a splurge on the shipping and handling. Try ordering through Goldbelly.com if you don't need the lobster soup like me. I have come to expect that every time I walk into a coffee shop or a place with counter service there is going to be some sort of option to leave a gratuity when I go to use my credit card or Apple Pay. This place is no different. However, There are three options for gratuity: 18% 24% and 30%. Mind you, there's lots of stuff in this place that's already prepackaged and you could walk in there and buy lots of things and not actually engage anyone behind the counter at all. And they hover over you when you are checking out. I can understand 5% 10% and 15% but starting your gratuity option at 18% is egregious. I'm more than happy to tip a few dollars on top of an order, especially if they are making a sandwich or putting together a large platter, but when I saw that 30% on the payment screen, I thought to myself "you've got to be kidding me." I actually emailed this place to voice my complaint but I never heard back from them. I rarely post reviews but I was so annoyed that when I spent $80 there is maybe an expectation that I would tip $24 on top of it that I decided to leave a review. It's easy enough to adjust the level of gratuity, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. However, I have been longing for their amazing smoked fish and appetizing. This past Saturday my current paramour and I happened to be on the Upper East Side and with the ex's safely in Florida, the coast was clear. My new love interest was not disappointed. She was instantly smitten by the Sublime smoked Irish salmon and the out of this world lobster salad! Sable's is hands down one of my favorite places to eat! The salmon is fresh, delicious, tasty and the staff were mesmerizing. Walking into this place, I looked around and the customers are all eating, talking amongst themselves. (Not gonna lie, sable's is in the more "fancier" neighborhood so the people inside were a bit snobby) Once we walked up to the counter I could tell the staff knew we were down to earth people just like themselves. They immediately started giving us samples, lobster salad, pastrami lox, dill lox, and ice cream! and even though they had mask on you could tell they were giving us a smile. Not gonna lie, they let us try so much that I was afraid I wasn't going to have an appetite. We ended up purchasing two bagels (pastrami lox and dill lox) and the salmon rolls with lobster salad. Been around for decades, sable is my fave smoked fish. Never fails to melt in the mouth. Love that Kenny used to work at zabarz. His slicing is paper thin perfect on the salmon. Always worth it to get the fresh sliced freak out exposed fish has perfect tasting omega 3s. Whitefish salad is great, light on the mayo, heavy on the fish. High quality smoked fish comes with a price tag to match! We came on a Sat around 12:30pm for our lox fix. The establishment has two parts; a to-go counter and retail shop, and a dine-in area. The place was lively with customers when we arrived, but not too crowded. When we arrived, we walked up to the dine-in counter to order, where I got to ogle (and salivate a little over) their offerings through a display case. I sampled two of their more popular items, the sable (of course) and the lobster salad. Both blew me awayyyy. The fish was salty and almost buttery, and the lobster salad was creamy and packed with lobster! And might I add, the sample portions were impressively generous. After our samples, we each decided on a toasted everything bagel with cream cheese, Scottish smoked salmon, sable, and capers. Let me tell ya, it was magic. The combination of the cream cheese, salty fish and capers, and the warm, toasty bagel was heavenly! I only wish there were more fish on the sandwiches; each of our $20+ bagels had only a single layer of each fish, which was disappointing.
