Silver Platters is a treasure trove for anyone who is into vinyls, dvds, cds, and even cassettes. This store is in the Sodo neighborhood and is a few miles away the Lumen Field and T-Mobile Park. This store is massive and is in a warehouse style building. The selections for vinyl records are is extensive with a mix of both used and new. I ended up picking a few vinyls during my hour of exploring through their racks. I was excited to finally acquire Santana and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Pricing was on the higher end. There were a few vinyls that were priced lower from other online retailers. I also explored their dvds and books section. They offer both used and new copies. Service was excellent. The staff assisting me provided some great information on their rewards program. Customers can accrue a rebate of 5% in the form of points on any purchases. Silver Platters was one of the best finds of our trip! We stumbled in and ended up spending 3 1/2 hours exploring all the records, DVDs, books, and CDs. There was so much to see, and every section had something fun to discover. This place is truly amazing. HUGE shoutout to Eddie for being awesome and making our checkout experience even better. The organization at the store kind of kills me. Most vinyl is dumped into one large catch-all category of Rock + Pop + Electronic + Ambient / Country / Jazz / Hip Hop. The Rock + Pop + Electronic + Ambient section needs to be split out a bit, it's a massive pain meandering through this huge snake of bins. Pricing is a bit high too, and most of the collector's albums in the $50+ bin don't deserve to be there. read more

Very large store with CDs and videos as well as vinyl records. As far as vinyl goes - if you are looking for a new record, this is probably one of the best stops to make. The ambience (fluorescent-big-box-store-vibes) will not mislead you in that regard. Typically I'm more interested in looking through bins of used records, and this place is less than ideal for that. They do have used records mixed in, but their stock doesn't seem to rotate too quickly, and it's a pain to sort through all the new stuff to find it. That said, I have definitely come across a few good finds here over the past several months. If you're more interested in used records, hit up Georgetown Records nearby for a fun browse that's heavy in unorthodox and more obscure records (not that they don't have some mainstream stuff sprinkled in). Then go to Easy Street over in West Seattle, which is HANDS DOWN the best store in town. Sonic Boom, Golden Oldies, and Daybreak get honorable mentions. One big pro: Silver Platters clearly labels ALL of their records with the artist and album title, so you don't have to pull them out of the stack to tell what you're looking at. Phenomenal feature. One big con: their bins are arranged fucking backwards. Yes, as in A in the back to B in the front. Yes, as in the exact opposite of literally every other record store you have ever been in. I can spend hours going through their vast selection of cds and vinyl. Even though they are a rice away for most people, their reputation of this company and the stores pulls people to them. In a few days is one of my friend's birthday, so I automatically thought of going to see if they have any obscure David Bowie vinyl. I saw a post on here that the lady was kicked out of their store because she couldn't and wouldn't abide by their rules of entry. I applaud them for standing up to the CDC rules and regulations for businesses to be open. They are not only protecting themselves but also the other customers in the store. I will go there feeling safe knowing that they care about me and others who enjoy to surround themselves and their loved ones with music! Took a box of used lps in for trade the other day. I'm a collector/dealer so I know their value and I calculated there was about $400-$500 worth of lps based on current Seattle prices. After being forced to show an ID card to trade in records I was offered $15 store credit (which would buy perhaps two used cds). Jokesters. read more

I have to admit that it's difficult to gauge a record store on just one visit but I never thought I'd come away from such a large store feeling so indifferently about it. First of all, Silver Platters is a big store, so they can't simply open the front door to get air moving through and I get that. But it was incredibly stuffy in the store the day I was there and this was on a day when it was about 75 degrees outside. Secondly, I'm a vinyl hound. The store was huge but about 75% of it was given to CDs and other things. That's fine but it also seemed to be way more new then used. I'm a digger and like to look through good, used stock. Maybe add a star from me, if you don't care or even prefer new. Silver Platters definitely gets dinged by me for having the most annoying filing system of any record store I've ever been in. Keep in mind, I'm old and it was really stuffy inside the store. Like a lot a stores, they had many artists with their own section, filed alphabetically, although quite a few of those only had one or two records in them, so it was sometimes hard to see which artists had their own card in some rows. More frustrating was there were miscellaneous sections for every letter of the alphabet but each letter was actually broken up, (i.e. "Sa", "Sc", "Se" and so on). That would have been fine except that these broken up letters didn't run consecutively, so that "Sa" and "Se" had several individual artist cards in-between. This meant that you had to check about 100 different miscellaneous sections, if you just wanted to see if anything cool was in there. And, of course, you had to traverse new stock right along with used for every section. By the time I got to the J's, I was ready to throw in the towel. Not exactly a digger's dream. I'm sure this store is a better experience for a lot of people, so I don't want to dissuade anyone from shopping there. But it wasn't a good fit for me on that day. read more

I really wanted to like this place! Way better selection than easy street records, closer to where I live, fair prices, and supporting a small business, what's not to love! The costumer service here is truly awful. If you don't look like the staff don't expect anything nice from them. Unless you are going in knowing EXACTLY where the record you are trying to find is then good luck sorting through their bullshit sorting system. If you want a great record store go to Easy Street Records. And if you must go here just check their website for stock and call them to hold it for you. My review is even more true now than it was when I wrote it 2 years ago. Golden Oldies in the U District is gone, Easy Street is barely open at all; Silver Platters keeps on being THE place to get. I enjoy the diversity of the music they play while I am shopping, too. It's not just rap and grunge and electronic stuff turned up to 11. Been to the one in Bellevue-Crossroads and sorely miss the QA and Maple Leaf/Northgate locations. But this one in SoDo makes up for it with free parking and an amazingly huge selection: genre, format, new/used, accessories, mags, Tshirts, and other swag. But I've visited this site twice in under a month plunking mega green on CDs, DVDs, and books. OMG - music and books! Add in super nice and knowledgeable staff, score! Reminiscent of the days of Peaches and Tower Records. I have to stop being lazy and putting up with lame, limited selections at corporate box stores - support the local indie shop! Hey, Mr. DJ, please put my record on! When was the last time ANYONE purchased a CD, let alone a cassette or vinyl record?! With the digital age in full force, Silver Platters is a breath of fresh air and a pleasant blast from the past. I didn't realize how much I missed thumbing through rows of albums until my recent visit to Silver Platters. I've been meaning to stop by (since I walk by it everyday on my way into work). Located on 1st Ave in the Sodo District, Silver Platters looks unassuming from the outside. However, the space inside is a lot bigger than expected and the wide selection of music was organized pretty well. Besides the classics (Fleetwood Mac or The Beatles), they also have new music available at full price, such as Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, and Nicky Minaj. For me, deals on prices and costs are a hit and miss (e.g. you might get a good deal depending on what you're looking for. Generally, costs for used goods ranged from $1 to $30). The range is still a little high for used goods, but the staff seemed friendly and knowlegeable about music. They also sell and buy used music, DVD, and books. Though I've never sold my things to them, it might be a good way to lovingly recycle your used stuff. read more

This is my go-to record store. The staff is super-helpful and I ADORE the owner/GM (handsome fellow with silver hair). The selection is pretty good - I've always found limited issue stuff on the shelves each time I've gone. Prices are comparable to other record stores. On one RSD, I grabbed a box set that was stocked with the vinyl thinking (and hoping hard) that it WAS vinyl - nope, turned out to be a bunch of cds and a book packaged like vinyl. Though I'd opened it the plastic, they let me return it without hassle, even on RSD. On this most recent RSD, I was gunning hard for a particular record so I called ahead of time to ask the staff for advice on when to get in queue. The staff member I spoke to was super nice and very helpful. He also told me where I could find the vinyl I was looking for so I could just beeline for it. I have never heard of Silver Platters before, so I don't have anything to compare to. But I was pleasantly surprised to see this store open up in the SODO area because quite frankly, SODO could use a few more businesses. This store has records of all sorts (including vinyl) and some used books. The used books seemed to be quite extensive and a lot of bestsellers. I saw titles like A Million Pieces of Me, The Catcher in the Rye, The Kite Runner, etc. Prices seemed reasonable. I didn't spend too much time looking at prices but most books seemed to be in the $5-$10 range if I'm not mistaken. I am looking forward to coming back and browsing for awhile! read more

I love Silver Platters! They have only a few locations left and sadly the one on Lower Queen Anne has moved to SODO! However, the store is huge! Lots and lots of music and movies everywhere! I would love to support our local record stores but they have since downsized in store locations as everyone is switching to digital media (boooooo, shame on you!). If you're looking for some rare movies and they don't have it, they will be glad to order it for you. They have an extensive collection of laser discs as my boyfriend is totally obsessed. However, there are two sections that you should be made aware. There are the "cataloged" discs and there are the "un-inventoried discs". The un-inventoried discs are usually "appraised" by a person that is only there on certain days. If the staff at the front says they cannot sell it to you, make sure you ask them to hold it and ask the person who looks and prices them. I believe that if they "aren't for sale", they shouldn't be on the sales floor. Anyway, the music section is great! I love to get my CD's (yes, I still buy CD's as my car does not have bluetooth capabilities and besides if I no longer want it, I can sell it to Half Price Books or give it to someone. Their new releases are reasonably priced. They no longer have the "used" section like they did when they were on Lower Queen Anne, but makes searching easier as all you have to do is find the band/artist you are looking for. If you are wanting physical media, I would go here if you cannot stand having to navigate through Ballard to go support Sonic Boom or to West Seattle to support Easy Street Records. I mean, by all means, support them, but if you don't feel like having to search for parking and then pay a ridiculous amount then head to Silver Platters (they have a private lot). I'm exploring my album collection and got me a classic Denon direct drive turntable that's just fantastic. I walk in and go directly to the used records; totally ignore the other 90% of the store as my sole focus is on LP records. Now, i'm totally into records and here's a place where you can score some classic rock albums for $5-$8 easy. I've got me a couple of Dire Straits used albums for a reasonable price and they are in pretty good shape. This is a place where they are constantly getting in used albums so you have to cycle through here pretty often to pick up the choice ones. This is on my way to-from work so it's so easy to drop by and check out the selection. read more

Selling to them: Came in with about 6 paper shopping bags full of DVDs and Blu-rays and a box of vinyl after cleaning out my collection. Some of them weren't even opened/unwrapped yet. All of it was contemporary stuff and I got about $150 cash for all of it. They offered to donate the stuff they couldn't use. They seem to have a very large selection of new and used CDs but honestly didn't browse so couldn't comment on that. I have been looking for a record store like this for a while and since the Pacific Northwest still embraces in the existence of record stores this day and age I knew it was only a matter of time before I would come across it. As I said, the music selection is great and they have pretty much anything you might be looking for. If they don't they have another location in the Northgate and it seems like if they do not have it here then the other one does. They also have impressive book and DVD sections as well! The DVD section is very cool! They have a wide range of foreign, cult, mainstream and tv series for sale here. A kind of selection I have not seen in a long time! The prices are a little on the high end for new merchandise but you can get good deals on used product here as well so that is something to consider as well. Not even when you say Hi at check out they won't say anything. But jolly conversation will be had if you resemble them. I had first went to there old Queen Anne location & almost had a heart attack because I thought they had went out of business. Oh no!! I thought. How am I supposed to build my music & dvd collection?? Thankfully they merely moved to Sodo & are still in business. Nonetheless Silver Platters is still the same great place you know & love. You know massive music collection, massive dvd collection all new & used. Their selection did not go down even though they moved. I recommend buying used if available. You save yourself a ton of money, & the dvd's as well as the music cd's are re-conditioned like new, so you're still getting a great product along with great value. The new location is also larger so that's nothing but a good thing. The staff are great like you'd come to expect. The parking lot is a little smaller than their previous Queen Anne location, but hey it is Sodo. No complaints here. You won't be complaining either. Silver Platters Sodo is quietly competitive with the best music stores I've ever seen, including Rasputin and Amoeba in San Francisco. The store has a stunning classical LP collection, top-grade and inexpensive, and they keep right at the cutting edge of all genres. The classical and jazz collections are way beyond comparison in the Northwest; it is the only place to seriously shop for those genres. But, if you are looking for the latest rock/pop, you'll find it on release day here, too. All prices are reasonable. And, the staff is always friendly and helpful, partly because most staffers are adults and not hipsters. Seattle is graced by Silver Platters' presence; most cities have nothing like it. read more

They have a pretty good selection of used classical and new jazz vinyl. Their rock vinyl selection is also pretty solid. Their pricing can be a bit wonky. I was looking at a record the other day that they are selling for 6 dollars cheaper online at discogs than they were in the store. I asked them to match the price and the guy said he couldn't because the price online didn't include the shipping. I said, yeah but you aren't shipping it, I'm buying it right now and he said he could take a few dollars off but couldn't match the price they sell it for online. I'm not sure why, maybe they try to make money on their shipping. I don't think that is the case, but realistically if I am buying it in the store for the same price you have it listed on discogs then I'm saving you the 8% selling fee. Anyway I'll probably keep going there to browse o my lunch break when the weather is nice but I'm certainly not going to go out of my way to purchase from them instead of ordering online like I have in the past. read more

As a vinyl DJ of 11 years it is a joke to me that these guys dont even have a turntable for a listening station (the store is called silver platters hello??). Was denied my handytrax regardless of letting em know where I was digging (for records that are already wrecked... not new ones duh). They pay more attention to keeping their "quality" trash records from being listened to instead of keeping returning customers. If you wanna buy new reissues or are hipster to vinyl this is the place for beginners. If you're a crate digger you're gonna find overpriced and typical records like you see anywhere else.
