I've lived in Seattle for large periods of my life and Silver Platters had been my top destination for CDs for years. I listen to mostly underground music and they always had a terrific inventory of CDs on independent labels. I've been gone about a decade now, and it was a pleasant surprise to discover this relatively new SoDo location. I, like most, no longer purchase CDs but decided to see what they had in DVDs and books and assorted swag. There is a surprisingly good selection of used books and DVDs and I was not surprised to see the still impressively diverse selection of music. To folks my age, and older (40+), there is also a hint of nostalgia. Something about flipping through CDs and discovering that hard to find gem was perhaps more rewarding than the current state of the industry in which one can find almost everything online AND own it nearly instantaneously. Nice new big store, even though its basically just a huge warehouse, but the open space is nice. LARGE selection, sometimes its overwhelming, but they have a lot in stock. The folks that work there are nice, they don't walk around and bother you, but if you have a question they step right up! The prices are a bit high, sometimes over priced. I have seen a few instances where the sticker price was more than the "MSRP" price on the top of the case. But, if your on their newsletter email list you get a coupon good for once a week. On the flip side, they usually have the lowest price on deluxe edition of CDs when they first come out, lower than the big guys even! Also take part in the loyalty card, its a 5% return. Trading in is ok, I feel like they pay low, sell high. I got an excuse once they had "a lot" of a series, and they just sit, so they can't pay me much. Come back and they are selling them for $11, most places sell them used for $5, so no wonder they sit. Overall I do like shopping there, I have found some good things, things I've been looking for, and some great deals. Always worth stopping by for an hour if your nearby. read more

Seattle has a handful of quality music stores. The SoDo Silver Platters, however, is my default destination for my music shopping needs. What sets this store apart from others? For me it comes down to two things. First, the sheer volume of their selection puts others to shame. While some stores will offer sizable selections in certain genres, it will often be at the expense of genres that generally sell less (I am thinking primarily of jazz, classical, and country). This is not the case with the SoDo Silver Platters. Sure - the selection of rock and pop music is by far the largest offering, but others genres are nonetheless well represented. This means that even without my wish-list of records/CDs in hand, I can always manage to find at least several items on a whim. The second distinguishing factor is their healthy selection of audiophile related releases. Really it's not just audiophile releases per se (though that's of importance to me) - it's the overall curating of their selection that impresses. I have found things here I thought impossible to find in a brick and mortar store. And I have done so with enough frequency that I attribute it to more than blind luck. Whoever their buyers are, they seem to know what to look for when ordering items or buying a used collection. Admittedly, the two criteria above are not necessarily important to everyone. But if you are into a wide variety of music across different genres and/or if you hunt for certain releases/remasters of albums, this is the store for you. read more

I came in today thinking that I should support one of few music stores in the city. I was carrying a medium size purse. They asked me to check it in. I let them know that I wanted to keep it as I had some important items in there. It is no different from an average purse any woman might wear. They asked me to leave. I let them know they just lost a customer who would have happily spent money in their store. Their choice if they want to police their clientele. And no I am never coming back, stocking to Itunes from now on and keeping my stuff with me where it belongs. read more

Called everywhere trying to find the new Rolling Stones album in vinyl for my dad. It had come out a week or two prior and nobody had it. Called this place and they not only had the regular vinyl , but the fancy limited edition version. I'm not a fan of going all the way to seattle for one thing, but this time it was worth it. They've got a huge selection of all kinds of music. Especially CD's. I will for sure return here again! read more

I had such a bizarre experience in this store. I had been in before and didn't find anything. But I had a few CDs on my list, so I decided to stop by a couple months ago with my friend to try to find them. Apparently, my friend had a security tag from another store in her purse. Their alarms went off as soon as we walked in. The staff asked that they keep our bags behind the counter while we shopped which is not unusual in Seattle, so whatever. Neither of us were fazed by that. Silver Platters didn't have any of the music I was looking for which is really strange, because this location is HUGE. I was disappointed, and the stuff they did have was overpriced for a town with sooo many great record stores. So we went to leave. Instead of handing us our bags over the counter, like any other store I have ever shopped in. The (incredibly awkward and rude) staff made us walk outside and then, while holding our bags as if they were someones rotten underwear, handed us our bags out the door. What? Why? Not very welcoming! It didn't make any sense, because clearly the reason the alarm went off was because something was in her bag when we ENTERED. They acted like we were thieves and were totally impolite when there was no way we even stole anything... I won't be back. read more

This is an amazing store and one of those stores where you have to visit. This store is chocked full of music and books and contains a TON of sweet collectables that you can look at (Even a few copy's of Beatles album from Japan!) although they are of course hard to afford. This store has something for everybody. Fair prices on all music and a ton of genres of music to look at. Highly recommended! Friendly staff too :). read more

First time in this location which was a 70 minute walk for my best friend and I (going back home). They have a huge selection, it is well organized and they have lots of stuff, however, after being in there for 90 minutes neither my best friend and I bought anything which is really unusual for us. The problem is that some of their older stuff is overly priced for what it should be and there isn't anything that people actually want, at least music geeks like myself. We thumbed through many isles and shelves with possibilities, however, walked out with nothing. If the price was better on some of the older stuff than I would've come home with a lot more but $24.99 for a B-grade movie. Yes it is rare but it's really not that rare. I accidentally fell asleep in the chair 'cause they were playing some monotone country music....not shopping inspiring music at all. read more

Just a couple of blocks north of the West Seattle bridge. All three of their stores have a great selection of CDs, DVDs and vinyl. But this location has cassettes, books and laser discs as well! If you can't find what you are looking for ask and they will see if they can order it for you. Also they are great at responding to emails as well. read more

The beloved Queen Anne location has relocated to the SODO district and all of the amazing staff from QA made the move. I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the new store. It's very spacious and inviting. Silver Platters has a great selection of new and used cd's, vinyl, DVD's, and books. They also buy used items, so this is a good opportunity to clean out your collection and get a few bucks. The store has a loyalty program which allows you to accumulate points for each purchase, and the points can be redeemed for free items. They also offer a 10% discount for members of the EMP Experience Music Project. Silver Platters has always been known for their in-store performances, so you can expect plenty of those in the new location. And don't worry, they have a parking lot so you don't have to look for parking on the street. Whatever your music/entertainment needs, Silver Platters is the place to shop. read more

I have been a customer of Silver Platters since 1987 when there was only one store in the Overlake area of Bellevue. Twenty-seven years later, I am more impressed than ever. I usually stop by their store in the Sodo area of Seattle at least once a week. Their inventory of new and used CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, and books and magazines is huge, the best (by far) north of San Francisco. The staff is very knowledgeable and professional...no hung-over, strung-out hipsters (Easy Street?) working here. Sign up for their on-line newsletter that comes out about every other week. It will keep you informed on new releases, live performances, and special events. It also always has a store discount coupon. Decent amount of LPs but I never seem to find what I'm looking for, and I'm not talking about anything obscure. A decent of staple records like Surrealistic Pillow, Harvest, Abbey Road, are always very overpriced, probably to snag the unskilled casual collector. I like Silver Platters but perplexed at their collections sometimes. The Crossroads store yields much better, cheaper and even rarer finds. read more

I love record stores and the culture that surrounds them. I have been going to them for many years. I'm grateful that places like Silver Platters exist and that there are 3 of them to choose from. This was my first time to the SoDo location and I have been put off from going because the location was just too remote for my liking. I shouldn't have waited so long because the location isn't that bad. Inside is big which can be cool but overwhelming. Lots of CDs, records, movies and books. Lots of good and worthy stuff to purchase but the whole space is bland. I didn't feel like I would be missing out on anything if I didn't visit here. Which makes me sad because I would love this place to have the charisma of other large record stores like Amoeba in California. Maybe have a stronger personality like what the people there listen to. Even if I don't like something I still like to see that employees/ staff are interacting with it's clientele. read more

I'm grateful places like this still exist. I enjoy the process of using my legs and arms and fingers when searching for music. This is the place I go to chill and unwind before I hit up the nearby Costco. Gigantic music selection, love all the out of print used stuff. read more

Great store. In town for a night and had to make this our second vinyl store stop. Nice selection of new and used Vinyl and pricing is fair. Got a couple hard to find albums. All and all I was really impressed with the ease of access to the albums and the quality. Every $5 or lower album I picked up was in VG+ or better ...no junk. The customer service was great at the register the guy even have us a map of all Seattle lp stores. Defiantly coming back next time we are in town . Totally Awesome read more

Best music store in Seattle. My wallet smartly keeps me out of here except on a rare occasion. I do frequent Lynnwood and Bellevue more often simply because I am going to find great things at all if them but not as much at Lynnwood and less at Bellevue. I had a collection of 78's and LP's which I took down to SODO over a 1 week period. The staff was very friendly and didn't seem over whelmed by my collection. I was very appreciative as I was moving. I now have a rewards card with lots of credit on it. I found some of my favorite LP's on CD's which I bought. I was a happy camper. read more

One of the few record stores left. This store has an amazing selection of music; they include a lot of obscure music and the prices are, for the most part, very reasonable. They also tend to offer discounts on new releases. If you're a music fan, give this place a try. It's a very handy place to see the CDs or LPs before you buy them and to ensure that they do not break in transit. read more
