I've visited Fantagraphics that shares the same entrance and corner location, but finally ventured left to check out Georgetown Records (1/14/24). Like every indie vinyl shop, there's always treasure to be had. Enjoyed seeing the various world titles, variety of nostalgic bric-a-brac, vinyl for every price range, plus really friendly upbeat staff. I ended up with two records from Donna Summer and Rick James. Not a popular genre for some, but I love disco! And who didn't dig such a catchy tune, Super Freak?! It was such a score and ended up being quite the economical purchase versus the mocha I drank afterwards. read more

They have a variety of music genres but I just like browsing to see what new music I can discover. Eclectic funky record store in the heart of Georgetown. This musty old place has a decent collection of vintage vinyl for you to browse, but it's a tad pricey. I find the store very charming and laid out well but the supply is limited so have a list of what your looking for and pray for that gem may suffice. Who knows that Danny Bonaduce or Lenny & The Squigtones LP may be in stock. I do know that at times you can grab some KISS on blue label Casablanca or Rolling Stones records but occasionally you'll even find some rare out of print Seattle GRUNGE records for your collection.now the staff has always been nice and answered any question I ask. Its not like the lame hipster dufus staff at Easy Street Records that thinks it's far above the everyone else when it comes to music, GTR cares about its customers. However this best part of GTR is the proximity to some great restaurants and bars so after shopping you can troll around and make a killer afternoon of it. The guys in this record store just walked off of the set of High Fidelity. I feel like I've crash landed on the planet of the 1950s music nerds. I have no idea how to even deal with these people. While trudging around the new-to-me Georgetown area, this place caught our eye. You see, my bro's fiance & I are going old school and have picked up turntables. So the world of vinyl is now wide open to us. This place was decent. There were quite a few people here late on a Saturday afternoon. There is a bookstore on one side and records on the other. They had a decent selection, but my quick scan didn't really reveal much. The near-possibilities for me were a little pricey; I ended up walking out empty-handed. Hands down best record store we visited while touring Seattle. This record store is perfection. Excellent, tidy selection of rock, jazz, soul, folk, psychedelic, & country LP's, reasonably priced and nicely packaged in crisp plastic sleeves. It's very obvious that each used record goes through a careful inspection to prevent any unwarranted requests for a smaller marked price (BF tried to negotiate a lower price for a Buzzcocks record we didn't own which was shot down. They were totally in the right too- top notch condition and actually decently priced.) Did I mention how rad the decor is here? It's already pretty precious in that the building is shared with Fantagraphics Books- one of the coolest comic shops ever- BUT they also get extra stars for their efforts in decoration- including antique radios, cameras, and record players?!? Georgetown Records' killer asset, apart from a well-curated selection of records, is the most-affable and knowledgeable owner Martin. Calm, welcoming, and helpful, he will never steer you wrong in helping you choose from his reasonably priced stock. If you're after punk, post-punk, new wave, minimal wave, world music, and indie rock, you cannot help walking out with $100+ of life necessities after browsing for ten minutes. Most importantly, Martin remembers the job duties of record store staff: Art curator, docent, and gentle salesman, duties seemingly forgotten by hipster staff members of too many local record stores, who, like baristas, are often too cool/sour to engage with customers (Note: regrets over terrible tattoos should not spill over into work demeanor). read more

Meh. It is not the High-Fidelity-esque music geek paradise that people are making it out to be. They have a decent collection, and I picked up some weird one-offs (an odd 10" labeled only in Chinese, a small-run hardcore collection, etc.) but it has only a fraction the selection of other places I've seen recently and what they have is 90% 'the usual suspects'. They have a bit of kitsch (2 whole Village People albums in a special category), some 80s stuff I had forgotten about (Lena Lovich for instance), but you can get a good idea of the complete stock within an hour (vs. some stores where that will get you through A-E if you're lucky). The staff weren't particularly engaged until we asked a question and then they were helpful enough, but really if you're going to compare a store with something out of High Fidelity then I expect someone to point at me and say "You! Favorite album cover of all time?" and the judge me based on my response. I don't really get the sense of esoteric discussions taking place about music that 80% of public has never heard of...which is a shame, that's really what I was looking for. read more

What can i say about Georgetown Records? The owners are really nice and friendly(all 12 of them). Martin buys some great new records, he has impeccable taste, Scorpions fetish aside, and the used records they have aren't too shabby either. i might add that while you are there you should check out the nearby Fantagraphics Books. and by nearby i mean in the same store. thats right the store is half awesome psych and punk records, and half fantastigraphical comic book and art book shop.they have all the issues of Love and Rockets. a "shit ton" of Crumb(i heard somebody say that phrase and i liked it.)they also have art books with artist like Mark Ryden, and camille rose garcia. read more

Now THIS is a record store. Definitely a store for more serious collectors. I've seen a lot of stuff I've never seen any where else. The few employees that do work there are always helpful and good for a chat. The $3 bargain section is always good for an album or two no matter how often I go in. The 'Just In' section can also have some great gems. If you're a beginning collector, you might be a tad out of your element, but even then, it's worth having a look. read more

I had received a $50 gift card 3 years ago, I did not live in the area; and upon moving back I went to use the gift card recently; and it was NOT accepted! The assistant said, 'it expired'. However, there was NO expiration date listed on the gift card. I am extremely disappointed. Unless there is an expiration date listed on the gift card - to my understanding, there is never an expiration date. I feel I got robbed of the $50. read more

Really cool location, and nice store. Kind of reminded me of smaller version of Empire Records. Nice selection of classic rock. It is my own fault, but When I got home one of my records was not what I purchased. A Beatles record is a Beatles record though. I will be returning in the future. read more

Great experience today at Georgetown Records! I'm going to use Goldmine Mags secret record shopper criteria: Staff, Stock, Store, & Selection because it is helpful. Staff: Really nice guy up at counter. I asked if he could put a record on for me. He gladly obliged. We had a nice chat too about records from the 70s. Stock: The quality of used vinyl for sale was the best I've seen. Many covers were NM. Many of the records I looked at were in VG+ to NM condition. Each record was placed in a 3 mil sleeve for protection. The average price for nice LPs $9 to $13. I'd gladly pay. The LPs in the $3 bin looked pretty darn good. Store: Georgetown Records shares it's space in the building with Fantagraphics. The record space is about 850 sq ft . The light was good. Bins were arranged neatly with alphabetical separators and some specific musical artists. Selection: I was impressed at how many great pressings they had of Bowie, Stones, Blondie, Moody Blues, The Cure, and so on. I felt like they had a satisfying selection. Met my expectations. You could go to Easy Street who have tons more and pay $5 but the quality is not there or the staff. I was happy with my purchase and I'll definitely go again. Parking is on the street. I found a free spot right away. They are open 7 days a week. Check online for hours. Usually they open during the week at 11:30 am. read more

Three stars for the selection, four stars for the vibe, location and experience. Now I don't mean to suggest the selection is poor--its great for vintage, used and really good for reissues (particularly the most interesting stuff from the 80s and 90s and a good amount of stuff from the 50s and 60s). But if you are into the latest and brightest and the shiniest, this isn't the place for you. Heck, if you are into even the more interesting contemporary left field, electronic, indie/post-indie or hip/anti-trend new stuff (or reggae, hip hop, dance and other genres) this isn't the place for you (they have some but not a lot). But if you are into the stuff all those genres depend on/imitate/fetishize/sample then you have found a great spot. The folks who work there have always been cool, informative but not intrusive and willing to play stuff for you to help you decide. For newer stuff I go further North but when I want to remember what made me love music in the first place and discover strange new corners of the past, this place rocks. For some reason I find myself always going there when its raining and having a great time. read more
