Popped into this store on our walk around the city after lunch. Amazing decor outside and in: gotta love their dog friendly sign no Republicans !) ... gave me good vibes from the start. Dedicated to real punk. Did not have some mainstream bands but overall great curation of items and vinyls/CDs. They also have decor, old posters or signs from different shows, some T-shirts, DVDs, cassettes and even VHS. My brother loved this shop. He's a curator and big fan of vinyls and punk/pop/punk/metal and he really enjoyed this store. Super friendly and knowledgeable associates at the store as well. I walked past this place on my way to a conference and made a mental note to stop by when they opened... holy crap was it great. Haven't been in a record store where the purveyor knew so much about punk rock bands and history in my life. The selection of crust albums (old and new) was staggering and I definitely spent way too much time chatting and shopping. Okay, the thing I was most excited about here (other than the super cool decorations) was that they have patches and pins!! $1 patches are a STEAL and this is the only record store from what I've visited in the area that has such a good selection. They have a couple racks of shirts but not a ton, and some posters but again, not a ton (and a little pricey). As far as records go I was impressed- they had a well curated selection of older and newer artists, and some cds as well. Definitely pricey but in consideration to the Seattle area I've seen worse. Guy behind the counter was having a silly little scornful discussion about kids these days which was more endearing than anything. Will definitely be coming back after I finish sewing these patches onto my overalls :)) read more

Pretty fun place to search for vinyl. Staff were great with us even though we had a small child. My teenage kid loved looking at the selection. I felt that the prices were pretty decent considering that they had such a huge selection of vinyl, CDs and cassette tapes. read more

My favorite record store (and favorite store, period) in all of Seattle. If you're into punk rock, it really does not get any better than this place. I've been shopping at SGS since I was in high school (back in the 90s!), and it's still every bit as awesome now as it was back then. Much of what used to make Seattle so special has been paved over and turned into shitty condos, but this place has somehow survived it all. Here's hoping it stays that way forever. Excellent, fun record store for punk rock and related genres. I wound up digging through hundreds of garage/punk, etc. singles from the 70's to today and bringing home an armload. They were also very reasonably priced. The ones I bought averaged about $3 per. There are probably better, overall record shops in Seattle but Singles Going Steady is definitely worth the trip for anyone in tune with the genres they stock and who likes to dig around for stuff. Great place to come for some obscure and other ways in accessible styles of music and formats. Very nice punk rock atmosphere, and a very orderly record store. There is far more to the inventory than records, such as audio and video cassettes, CDs, patches, T-Shirts and other print work. There is a heavy emphasis on networking, and displaying current local events in plain sight via flyers and other promotional materials. The owner is very nice and personable, and is extremely helpful in suggestions, helping you find things, etc. etc. Overall I had a very good experience. read more

During my punk and hardcore years, this would have been my favorite record store in Seattle hands down. Their selection for the various subcategories that fall within those genres was pretty massive. I want to be a cowboy... (I'd never make it as a punker.) Because I know that song, I am cool enough to come in here. I am not, however, cool enough to know any of the bands that were represented in the t-shirt rack. I am, however, still deeply in love with this place. I had a really bad experience here. One positive was that there was a great selection of used vinyl which is what I typically go for. I went to check out and pay for about 15 LP's and the owner said he would give me a discount for purchasing so many. He run me up for $155 and paid. When I got home I calculated my purchases and it came to $136 (without tax) and with tax that would have been just under $150. I paid $5 more than what I was supposed to and he even after the fact he said that he would give me a discount. Also, I was hesitant to purchase a copy of The Beatles - Help because I wasn't sure it was a 1960's first pressing. He assured me that it was so I purchased it. When I got home I looked it up and it was a late 1970's third pressing... I hate to be the crazy, critical record guy but this is specifically a record store and these things matter greatly to collectors who pay extra for more rare items read more

I have been going off and on to SINGLES GOING STEADY for several years. The collection of LP's, CD's, DVD's, Blue Ray's, VHS's, T-Shirt's, Patches, Pin's, and anything else you can imagine is here. They are independent and that means they won't have a million copies of the current coolest band. And that's a good thing. The staff are hella nice and knowledgeable. I have had lengthy conversations about the local music scene as well as the history of punk we experienced. And they are all willing to bend over back-wards to make you feel comfortable there. I have never had a bad time when I have been there. Every purchase for me has been a good one. I would rather give to my local retailers than those mindless corporate outfits online. The diversity of shoppers shows there is strong interest in this shop. Which makes me proud to stand behind it. read more

Might not be the biggest place, but Byron knows his stuff and always has some great old or new punk record spinning on the turntable when I walk in. Found a couple rare old LPs here, a couple newer reissues, and always something tasty. Oddly large selection of crust punk - check it out, as well as hardcore, metal, classic rock and a bit of jazz . Awesome posters, good tunes, not a blank space in this place. Decent prices too. Always worth stopping in. read more

Have you read the book or seen the movie, "High Fidelity"? You know, the book by Nick Hornby or the movie with John Cusack and Jack Black working at an indie punk rock store? Yeah this is totally it. But in Seattle. Starting with the fact that customer satisfaction is not high on their priority list (I was ignored the whole 20 minutes I was there which was fine by me because I was like a fish out of water since this is not my type of music). As well, the employees are full-time musicians and part-time sales clerk (the guy who ignored me was conversing with a friend about how he had to play a gig in Ballard that he didn't want to). Like High Fidelity, they have more records than CDs and lots of old-school band swag and memorabilia - a whole corner of the store selling old tour t-shirts! It also has the feeling of musical superiority and intimidation, like "if you listen to mainstream X, Y, and Z, then you don't belong here." Little did they know, I was listening to Britney on my iPod. But it's true, in all honesty, I don't belong there - I had time to kill before going to Mama's. Objectively, this store is geared towards a very specific market and it serves that audience well - good collection of punk rock albums both used and new. And because this store is specialized, people come to them and they don't have to approach the mass market. I do absolutely adore their name -- Singles Going Steady like The Buzzcocks album? Okay the only reason why I know this is because I love that British game show, "Never Mind the Buzzcocks." read more

We originally walked in here to try and sell off some 45s while we were on the road. They graciously bought off 4 of our singles at the $4-a-piece we were asking. We were rich. Yet, somehow, we ended up an average of $60 in the hole each. I saw strange things in there: walls moving, time bending, all coming into one pinpoint in time. You reach for that beam of light. You ask it if it has a name. It says nothing, because in the length and breadth of time, you are nothing. But you were once part of it. So it need not say a word. Had I not a sense for my own self-preservation, my own need to get home to San Francisco, I would have splurged, I would have binged, I would have orgiedi-lingused bins in here. But still my fingers. Let not the nostalgia of sold sides take hold. Let not the sadness of singles left in the wake of a move be the catalyst for pocket money run beyond my own reach. These were the sounds of my youth's vigorous righteousness. These were the blood vessels in the ends of appendages thrown out at sweat steamed rooms of novelty and violence. Stand there, pick carefully. Let me get home. Let me be free. But am I? A good question indeed. read more

I was intrigued by the name. Encouraged by the punk posters. And over the moon when I found an out-of-print Blag Flag album I'd (regrettably) sold ages ago, to never be seen again - until today. It was great seeing old friends like The Minutemen's "Double Nickels on the Dime," Husker Du's "Zen Arcade" and Minor Threat's "Complete Discography," as well as getting turned on newer stuff thanks to the tasteful choices of the store manager. If you like punk, if you like quality indie, you will love this place. I have never seen such a good selection of punk past & present. The majority of inventory is on vinyl, but I walked out happily with 3 gems on CD. I could have bought much more, but why not save it for future trips? read more

The section of 7" records needs to be organized, but I can overlook that as I was still able to find some good deals-- Just picked up a Cock Sparrer record on super crazy colored vinyl here for $10.99, where other places I've been to have the same thing for upwards of $40! The guy behind the counter was nice and chatted about the band with me and my bf which I thought was cool-- a lot of record store dudes are usually way too cool to do that. As soon as you walk through the door, you feel the love for music in the air! The guy working there is really fun and talkative. He definitely took me on a journey through the store, showed me his best seller and helped me find the ones that I requested. Even if I walked away with some records I wasn't looking for, I did fall in love with a new local band that he showed me while in the store. If you're looking for a cool local place to buy either old record or new local bands on vinyl....this places is really cool. Cons: When I went in, they didn't have any Bikini Kill CDs, which is what I was shopping for. Pros: They had oodles of Bad Brains albums, and the guy working there was really helpful and sympathetic. He gave me lots of information when I asked questions, and helped me search the store for 'em whenever I thought of an album that I'd like to buy. Extra Pros: Comfortable atmosphere appropriate for punk music, promotes local bands. It's a small punk music shop, occasionally with some stuff from outside of the punk genre. I wish that the store was bigger, and the selection was bigger, but hey! It's still an oasis, and very much worth the visit. read more

Some people like the name a lot, I'm not so keen on it. But I do like the store a lot. I grew up in the middle of nowhere, with no good radio stations around and only one semi-decent record store. I managed to find some good music along the way but it was an uphill battle, and I missed a lot until years later. Back then, a place like Singles Going Steady would have been a treasure for me. Even with the rise of the Internet and all kinds of online possibilities, it's still a great place to come to. Part of it is the guys behind the counter, especially the guy who is there on Friday. (Sorry man, I forgot your name, but we only met once.) There is a ton of great stuff here. For example, more Screeching Weasel than I've ever seen at one time in one place. Lot's of good new vinyl, and a couple of them will be Christmas presents this year. There's a pretty broad spectrum of used CDs, especially on the lower shelves. read more

I don't know how they have done it but in spite of the tanking of the music business and the closing of legions of independent record stores around the country, Singles Going Steady has managed to stay in business. If punk, crust, grind, and hardcore are your thing then you won't likely find a better selection in Seattle or possibly even the PNW. The only downside can be the parking. Either plan on paying for street parking or just take the bus. read more

Although they're in a pretty small location, they know their clients and stock accordingly. Shelves of used punk and rock album, nothing too cheesy unless you look in the used section, which only serves to demonstrate their charity to the guys looking to sell their crappy albums off. The new vinyls are full of hard to find albums from many hard to find acts. My last trip yielded Devo's are we not men, Teenage Jesus and the jerks' first album, and a picture disk of the jesus and marychains' interview! All priced similiar to ebay. But you don't come to record stores because you know exactly what you're going to get, you go to hunt through shelves of vinyl for something promising. And that's why they excel, they have many great albums to accidentally discover that you wanted so badly. read more

Singles Going Steady is one of those ultra specialized record stores. They might have sections that pay lip service to, say, jazz or electronic music, but they have separate sections for every punk rock subgenre ever devised. Crust punk? Right next to grindcore, one row over from hardcore. When you find the gutterpunk, you've gone too far. Although their niche is pretty obvious upon entering (the punk rock patches along the back wall help), they do have a pretty good selection of non-punk rock as well, including some rare and collectible items. It's definitely worth digging through the bins for some buried treasure, even if you don't classify yourself as a straightedge anarcho-marxist old school street punk, or some such thing. read more

Visiting Singles going Steady was by far the best part of visiting Seattle. And I'm not Seattle sucks either, the store is a truly spiritual experience for audiophiles. I found it by accident after having dinner at the noodle ranch across the street, and then, like a keen radar, honed int on the signal that was beckoning me to go to the promise land on 2nd Avenue. Upon entering you are barraged by the typical street punk patch foo foo crap. Don't worry about the 14 year old kid in yellow hair and spikes, his parents probably have a 4 bedroom condo in Belltown and he is just expressing his individuality. There is so much music its just overwhelming. Dedicate a good hour or two and work in a concentric circle through the stacks of skate-punk, grindcore, metal... stop... check out the Johnny cash album on the wall.... then on to rockabilly, local music.... and on and on. And finally, if you can manage the 75 albums you have just picked out, drool at the back wall which includes rarities from The Clash, Ramones, Cash, DOA... its just audio Ecstasy. I thought I would be able to find some Gits albums or garb but unfortunately, and the musical sage manager agreed, there was none... the quest continues... I did score a rare Italian album with full graphic of Johnny Cash doing train songs. For those of you into indie/punk and generally non top40 music, you know this place is calling you. Don't judge the patrons by their spikes, safety pins and Docs (actually a few well known punk musicians have some hilarious opinions on dress, including members of the Sex Pistols and the Clash) its a form of Do-It-Yourself, the fundamental rule of punk philosophy. It cracks me up when people ask what I do. They see a singlespeeder chick on a bike with tattoos and pig-tails who happens to be an Architect. read more

If I was looking for punk, I probably would have spent hours in there though so I give it 3 stars. I was looking for Reggae and didn't know about Zion's Gate until about an hour later. I did go through their limited reggae selection and picked out 3 45's that were very clean. All in new sleeves and a vinyl sleeve on the outside. Decent prices, not too high. These guys have their niche and they're sticking to it. 3 stars because they're not very well rounded and also because they sell used records and don't have a listening station. read more

This store has been around for a long time. Its been a very important part of the punk scene in the north west as long as i can remember. I can almost always find something if i dig for a second. I remember a few years ago i found most of the back bone for my collection all at once there. spent about 300 bux, then went back the next day and spent about 150 on Kreator, Sodom, destruction venom and death records. apparently some guy just dropped his whole collection at once, and i got there on the right day. My only complaint is that there usually isn't much of a metal section, but its there. If you're looking for punk, crust, hardcore, stuff like that, this store is a good one. Usually not as many rarities as some of the stores in Portland, but still a great store. read more

I love this store! I wish we had one like it in Atlanta. Don't get me wrong, we have record stores, but not like this. Aside from the standard shirts, pins, zines, VHS tapes (yes, VHS!), there is just a plethora of CDs and records, both used and new. The genres cover pretty much everything I like, garage, punk, oi!, hardcore, metal and crust. Yes, there is a crust section! The prices were totally fair and reasonable. The dude behind the counter was really friendly. I mentioned to my wife afterwards how pleasantly surprised I was that he wasn't all pretentious and douchey, that he was helpful and informative. I don't find myself in Seattle often so I don't know when I'll be back. But I know my next trip to Seattle Singles Going Steady will be on my list of places to visit. read more
