Let down, and more than a little surprised by some of their business practices. Never heard of qualifying different prices on the check compared to the menu by saying that it states (something like) "prices are subject to change" in small letters on the menu!! I honestly most likely would not have noticed if it weren't for the brand new waiter giving our bill to the wrong table (who actually paid for it... what a mess!) By the time we got our bill we noticed that it seemed to be much higher than we expected. Waiter wasn't much help, so my wife asked for the menu. Sure enough! Prices were different! Manager explained that it says that prices may change right in the menu. Never heard that one before!! Plus no refills on tea or soda. (Not shared by waiter) I've driven past this place a number of times and thought that a "train car" restaurant was pretty cool. Made a note to try it out. In this evening there was a packer game starting at 7:20 so I thought it would be reasonable to think that we if we were seated by 6:15 I wouldn't miss much of the game. By the time we got our bill settled it was 8:15. And there were only 3 tables with customers! Crazy slow service and our food took forever. I also couldn't understand how the 2 tables seated well after us were done and long gone well before we were. Must have known I wanted to get out to watch the game! Food was on the low end of average. Service was weak, but it was his first week. Actually felt a little sorry for him. He got flustered when the bills got screwed up. Caught hell from those customers too. Made for a tough night for him. Thursday Night at prime eating time and there was one other couple in the whole restaurant when we walked in. 2 more couples came in later. The restaurant up the road was packed. Obviously a reason. Love to help small businesses, but this was just too bad of an experience to want to go back. read more

This is the sort of restaurant that you really want to love. From the outside it screams quaint supper club realness in an interesting building (a train car). Inside, though, it starts to feel like someone's just given up. You're greeted by a messy hostess stand (why?) and other signals of a lack of attention (a bag of linens on a bar table?). The bar is cute enough, giving train car vibes but, like most of the restaurant, could use a good scrub. I'm not saying the place is dirty... but it's definitely sticky. Why are the bar table tips smeared? Shown to the dining room, the charm ends. Vinyl table coverings and laminated menues (both sticky) are anything but special (and like most laminated menus - it was inaccurate). On the positive side, after a wan "Caesar" salad, the steaks were quite good and perfectly cooked. Mine was accompanied with vegetables that still had tooth and were tasty. The prices are not for the faint of heart. Steaks hover around $50. While the plate itself was delicious, for this price I expect a much more special experience. read more

We stopped by while in town and we were a little disappointed due to the prices we saw on the menu online versus our bill.... Huge price increase so just beware! They need to update their menus. Other than that i ordered the pecan crusted salmon in a honey mustard sauce with the Caesar salad and cajun potatoes and it was absolutely delicious. The croutons were homemade so good and the salmon was cooked perfectly. The sauce was so creamy and not overpowering. I loved it. The potatoes were perfectly seasoned not salty or spicy! A perfect little place to celebrate a special occasion or to have a nicer night out. They have a wonderful ambiance with art and a cool set up in an old train car. The drinks are wonderful and classic Wisconsin. We had brandy old fashioneds, and a couple boozy ice cream drinks. Very well balanced cocktails. The ribs are very good as well as the Friday fish fry. So disappointed! Should've just walked out immediately. Once upon entering the restaurant, the woman behind the bar looked irritated to even be there. Then, we should've ran, when we were escorted into the dining area and we're greeted with it extremely rude extremely loud, diner. We were the only ones besides a very large party of eight, who one woman, she made very clear that she was from the college and should be listened to, pontificated andcommandeered all of the entire restaurant with her boisterous, loud overbearing vocals. I can't say that the food was horrible. But it was an extreme letdown when you looked at the price. And the fact that they are charged for everything, including a refill on your soda. One of the most cheapest ways to keep a customer happy. In today's day and age this restaurant better pay attention to the fact that not many people can afford to come out to dinner. I really was hopeful and eager to give four stars but I just couldn't do it. Not that anything was wrong or bad about the place but the food just wasn't stand out enough. However I must say the walleye special was cooked to PERFECTION. Delicious and massive cut of fish, flaked perfectly and flavorful. I just didn't love the "potato crusted" part which turned out to be hash browns all over it. For an upscale restaurant the hash browns felt way too bar-foody to me. Love the out of the box thinking but just wasn't quite a home run in this application. In addition, the price was too high in my opinion. Speaking of price, we felt the appetizer was way overpriced too. We got the bourbon shrimp which was quite good (if you like spicier stuff!) but it's just four shrimp and a blob of rice....for $15.50! We're not talking gourmet or jumbo shrimp here either. That being said though, I can't go without saying that this place provides a wonderful unique experience. We reserved a private dining room and it was lovely and very private since it's teeny and no one else is in there with you. We enjoyed looking around at the historic decor of the train car while also feeling the awesome fall breeze with the open windows. Only downside with that was lots of traffic noise. Given the price points of the menu, aka what is advertised as an upscale restaurant, I'd say a suggestion we have is that they have a better drink list. Only wine is listed and given to you at your table and the waitress brought us what she called an "old drink (cocktail) list." A full spirits list would be really helpful and classy for people like my husband who look forward to seeing what the bar has on hand. We're from out of town so I don't think we'll be back but in general it was a neat evening and different experience. Our group of 8 thoroughly enjoyed our experience at this supper club. The food was delicious, and our server paid attention to all the details. Meal began with unique drink offerings and bread service. All patrons in our party enjoyed the various meals (salmon, jumbalaya, shrimp Miguel, Caesar salad, roasted garlic bulb). The ambience is that of a tradition WI supper club, but unique in that half of the restaurant is literally an old train car with two private dining areas, perfect for a date night. We were a little shocked that the prices online were not as shown on the menu in the restaurant, but we understand that this is a representation of the current times and changes in consumerism. read more

Stopped to have dinner with my boyfriend and the food was outstanding! So fresh and absolutely amazing. The service was great and right on target. The Pomagranite Mule was delicious and Allan had the Old Fashion which was very stiff. The steak was tender and full of flavor while the ribs were juicy and fell off the bone. New in town and this place caught our eye as we drove past. Old railroad dining car converted to a restaurant. Started with drinks at the bar. Charming and perfect. For dinner we shared the Friday night fish fry and the New York strip. Strip was done as requested and was great. Fish was perfection. Haddock done just right. The breading was golden brown, crispy and delicious. Exactly what one is hoping for when ordering fish fry, and so rarely achieved. We'll be back soon! Hoping they can repeat. read more

Silver Coach offers a contemporary menu and an intimate setting. During a recent visit, we enjoyed the blackened Salmon in garlic sauce and a shrimp & scallop special over pasta. Entrees were great. However, The crawfish ball appetizer on special wasn't so special after all. The texture was funky and the mustard sauce masked the crawfish flavor I was craving. The best seats in the house are the private dining rooms in the Pullman railway car. They seat 2-4. Avoid dining outside. It's nothing special. We ate outside during a recent visit and won't make that mistake again. The patio is unremarkable and patio service was less attentive than indoor dining. It's a great place for a date. Not a great place to bring the whole family -- especially if you have young kids. I plan to come back to try their Peri Peri entrees -- which are very spicy. read more

My husband and I are new to the area and wanted to go some where more than just a casual place, for our Valentines dinner. The Silver Coach seemed like the place. It was intimate as advertised. Was disappointed about the dress attire. I felt out of place, it was more casual then dressy. Our dinner was outstanding, five stars for that and our service was just as great. It is a little a pricey as advertised but we were ok with that. Their martins were also wonderful, a great variety. Five stars for that. The food was cooked perfectly. Very impressed! So over all five stars, I rarely give a place five stars. Being from Illinois and eating at very upscale restaurants in Chicago, this is right up there with their cuisine. Tuesday night. Dinner while traveling. Not too busy. Really should be three dollar signs as average entree was about $25. Overall felt it was a little pricey, and Caesar dressing in salad was weak, and that is why 4 stars instead of five. Otherwise: Nice ambiance - agree with other yelpers that the private rooms are very cool - but really tables for two and so you are likely lucky to get one. Dining room is nicely appointed. Bar is also nice, and comfortable. Very cool that it is a train car motif. Nice menu - think supper club with more interesting treatments - like Gorgonzola leek sauce, and crawfish croquettes - both of which were good. Good wine list. Excellent old fashioned. Steak cooked to order. Cajun seasoned, square cut potatoes were very good. Overall, good steakhouse plus some very interesting dishes and looking forward to going back. read more

I had the pink lemonade martini and for dessert had their special chocolate strawberry martini. For starters a must try are their crabfish balls in a great roumalade sauce. Fun find - Silver Coach Supper Club - our server Juliet made it a fun visit and offered the private dining room that was formerly a "sleeper" in the original train car - very interesting details in this private dining room for two. In all candor dining at the Silver Coach deserves more time than we really wanted to devote as we were just driving through and ordered from their "lighter fare" portion of the menu. I tried the short rail ribs with fries and she tried the chicken strips with fries - again, probably not what we'd typically order for finer dining. My ribs were delicious, tasty, tangy sauce and her chicken strips were a little dry but tasty enough. We both had Brandy Old fashioneds from the bar and they were excellent. The decor is step back in time, nicely done. The next time we visit, we'll allow more time to soak in the ambiance and enjoy the full supper club experience. Enjoy, we did. read more

When you first walk inside, the bar section/waiting area is an old train car. The staff was very friendly and the food was delicious. I would recommend the piri piri scallps. My SO travels to Wausau frequently for work, and I often tag along just so that we can stop at this delightful restaurant on the way. The bar pours tasty, strong drinks, and the staff are extremely friendly. I agree with previous reviewers that you should definitely request a private room. Our favorite place in town. I agree with the previous reviewer that stated that it is not kid-friendly at all; we leave our daughter with a babysitter when we want to go here. Fabulous specials (always check with your server) and excellent regular menu. Our favorites are the Shrimp Miguel (regular) the coconut-crusted halibut (special), the cherry glazed duck (special) and the piri-piri seafood pasta (special; piri piri tuna is on the regular menu). They also do a mean steak (of several varieties) if you're in the mood for red meat. For a romantic evening, reserve one of the two private dining rooms. read more

OK, let me start out by saying our food was tasty (I loved the cheesecake) and our waitress was very kind. However, this was the strangest atmosphere I have ever experienced in a restaurant. My husband and I went here for our anniversary and were hoping for a romantic dining experience. We requested the private dining car, which was neat...but we could hear every single drunken conversation at the bar. We could also hear the football game playing on the TV in the bar. There was no music or sound barrier to speak of. Also, every time the door to the outside opened, we could feel the chilly air outside. For a place where we are paying $30+ for a plate of food, I would have hoped for a better dining experience. If I were to return here, I would just sit in the back and not bother with the private dining car. read more

Atmosphere: The idea of dining in a souped-up railroad car is quite interesting but the interior decor of the dining area leaves something to be desired. We started at the bar which was actually rather nice compared to the rest of the place and was probably where we experienced the best service and atmosphere all around. The bar area itself was pretty neat and we felt that the decor met our expectations for the amount we were paying to dine there that night. The dining area was very cozy and made for a warm invitation when we came here in winter but the mismatch of paintings on the wall definitely did not tally up to a "fine dining" experience. My boyfriend and I were seated in the corner (which was fine) but right next to another table when pretty much the ENTIRE dining room was available. It was rather awkward to say the least. Food: The drinks at the bar were very tasty - a job very well done by the bartender! Overall, I had the best experience with food versus what my boyfriend experienced. I ordered the seafood pasta which was a special that night and he ordered a steak meal which came with two medallions, requested medium, with the side of Cajun potatoes. My pasta was great - filled with a variety of shellfish I was very happy with my meal and had plenty leftover to take home. The steaks were unevenly cooked - one medallion cooked medium and the other well done. To add insult to injury, the Cajun potatoes were awful. Not only were the potatoes extremely dry, the dry Cajun seasoning did not taste well. Service: The bar service was really great and really enjoyed making conversation with the bartender as well as other customers seated there. The server in the dining room, however, was rather sub-par and had we known that we could have ordered our meals at the bar, we probably would have. In summary: I think we'll pass on sitting in the dining room the next time we go. If anything, we'll have tasty drinks at the bar and order our meals there since the atmosphere and service were significantly better than in the dining area. read more

If you are trying for a creative reasonably priced meal in a semi upscale place, try again. The meal was average ( you would do as well or better in many chains ) but the problem was that the price was two to three times the price anywhere in the area. Take a short drive to PJ's or Muse at Sentryworld- many more area restaurant examples. Buy a steak and sides at the grocery store and make it yourself- save as much as $40 apiece. If you want to treat yourself it shouldn't take a days wages and end disappointing - especially if you're picking up the tab. Nice ambiance, good service but slow, average food, and over priced by any measure. read more

Dined here on a Monday evening. This wasn't my first time here, but it was my first time here in about 6 years. We started at the bar for a few drinks prior to dinner. I fail to see how the drinks matched the price tag. I'm not a stranger to fine dining or fine cocktails, however $10 for a double cocktail with rail whiskey and generic premix seems to be a bit absurd. At the very least I'd have thought that a $10 cocktail would get you a different type of glass than an out of state Law Firm pint glass. I find it off-putting that a fine dining establishment doesn't seem to have its own glassware, or at least clear ones instead of a collection of pints from different places like a college frat house. When we were done at the bar and ready for our table, we were given the bar tab to close out right away - at this point, we just figured that we couldn't transfer the tab over to our dinner bill. We did overhear later another table did have their bar tab transferred to their dinner bill - not sure why this option wasn't given to us. As most dining establishments of the caliber Silver Coach pretends to be, there was bread offered to us prior to our salads. We each received 1 roll, which was a bit odd as typically a small basket with 4 rolls seems standard for a party of two dining. We were offered garlic for the bread, which arrived over cooked and bitter. For dinner, I had a pecan salmon, and she had a mushroom bourbon NY Strip. My salmon was a bit overcooked, which was not preferable, but acceptable. What I wasn't happy about was that it was also burnt in spots, which really took over the flavor. At $30 for the salmon filet, I'd expect it be cooked better than the $8 Applebee's salmon. My wife enjoyed her steak, but didn't have anything to add beyond that. At first, it appeared that my wife's salad fork was switched around with her dinner fork, or it could have been mine - they were very similar to each other with just minor differences. We peeked at the empty table next to us and saw that some place settings had two of the same fork, some had differences between the salad and dinner forks, and some had forks completely different then ours. It appears that they don't actually have salad forks, but instead a wide variety of different mismatching dinner forks. Our service was great, and this review isn't to cast a shadow upon the personnel working. It just seems that Silver Coach has lost its touch with the fanciness and gourmet foods that once set it apart in an area with few fine dining options. To spend $100 on three drinks and two entrees with a sub-par atmosphere and mediocre food, this unfortunately will be our last time dining there. As few other fine dining options are available in Stevens Point, they're all better options. read more

Went here for my birthday dinner with 12 of my closest friends. They weren't overly busy with about 5 other tables occupied, so our table received two servers and our service was horrible beyond belief. Being the guest of honor they served my eleven other guests first and then asked if we needed anything else not even noticing that I didn't receive my meal. I asked where my meal was and they said it would be out in a few minutes. A few minutes was15 minutes later. At this time everyone in my party had finished their meals and I had just begun eating mine. The server came by and refilled everyone's waters except mine as well. Then the bill came and they didn't even offer to comp my dinner for royally mixing up my dinner and the lack of service throughout the evening. We had to ask for my meal to be comped and they finally modified our bill. The prices for of the food are extremely InflaIted given the horrible service. The following week my buddy wrote a letter addressing the horrible service and mailed it via US Mail directly to the owner. To this day there has been no response from the owner apologizing for the cappy service. Needless to say we will not be patronising his place anytime in he near or distant future. read more

Our group of 4 dined here on a Friday night. The bar looked really nice, but we were seated immediately since we had reservations. We may not have needed them-there were several open tables. Service was friendly and attentive, and knew the menu well. Nice wine list, and I had my first and best Old Fashioned here. We sampled several throughout the weekend, and no others came close! I decided to go old school, and have the Chicken Kiev. It was very good, but the sauce served under the chicken kind of takes away from the butter running out when you first slice into it. My husband's filet was cooked just as he ordered it. Our friends ordered a Cod dish and Piri Piri steak, which was a special that night. He said it was very good, but really, really hot. Built around an old Pullman coach train car this is a quaint look for a bar, and has fantastic private dining rooms for 2 or 4. The dining area is nice, but unremarkable. Still put on a tie and take your best girlfriend for a great dinner. There is nothing on the menu I wouldn't order including their crab ball appetizer (and we never eat appetizers). Bread served with a bulb of roasted garlic to slather on and Cesar salad as good as I make. I had a Trapper John Steak ( why the cute names??) Which was done to perfection; pepper encrusted with a bleu cheese and mushroom sauce. Best GF had tuna steak in a chili sauce ( not my flavor but she liked it). Looks like they are building a good size outdoor deck to prepare for Wisconsin's smoking ban( I did not see any one smoking now) Too stuffed for dessert because of the ample portions and the inability to stop spreading roasted garlic on bread. My 5th stop at the "House of Garlic" Never disappointed On the down side we got there early this time without reservations and were seated at a table next to the intersection of bathroom, kitchen, and server station. There were unused tables for the entire time we were there. Next time I will refuse to be seated there. read more

I was not impressed at all with this restaurant. The bruschetta we ordered for our appetizer was comparable to a salt lick. The Ceaser salads we ordered were not served with Ceaser dressing, but served with what tasted like thousand island dressing mixed with quite a bit of pickle juice. I ordered a New York Strip which was sub par on flavor and the burgundy sauce reduction that was advertised on the menu, was in fact, the soup of the day, beef and barley!!! Disgusting!!! My wife's chicken meal was forgettable, as in I have forgotten what it was called because it was no where near the $23 it cost, not to mention the cheapest item on the kid's menu was $9.50. I will not be eating at this establishment again, and if you don't feel like spending $75 for a mediocre meal, I suggest you steer clear of the silver roach....um....I mean coach. read more
