This was my very first time at silky kitchen, after seeing it online frequently I finally decided to give it a go! During my recent stay in NYC, I ate at the mid-town location of Silky Kitchen a few times. On each occasion, I found the food always be pipping hot, freshly prepared, spice level to my taste, and surprisingly for being so close to Times Square a good value! The interior is modern, yet spartan in design aesthetic. There are a few counter and chairs towards the front towards the door, which either face the wall or the window onto the street. But there is also a funky curved communal wooden table, which is were I usually sat. Go up the counter and first choose your starch base (rice, dry noodles, or soup noodles) and then the protein and style of preparation. Soup noodles were okay, but I preferred the dry noodles, and specifically the stir fried pork with bamboo shoots. When I asked for "medium" spicy, the guy taking my order said, "Are you sure? It's Chinese level spicy." I assured him I could take it. Within 10-15 minutes, my dish was ready and served in a plastic bowl. TBH, even for "Chinese level spicy," the medium wasn't that hot. Good thing there was a station for additional chili oil, which I added a few spoonfuls for more heat. The pork had that "wok hei" smoky flavor and the bamboo shoots and other veggies were nice and crunchy; slight detractions since I could've used more bamboo shoots and less celery. Noodles were springy and were coated with all of the ingredients and sauce. A nice filling meal for under $20. I've been to this chain twice now. They have locations throughout New York. I used to love Xian Famous food so much, but I think it's got competition! This place has a similar concept as Xian - you go up to the counter to order your dishes and they are all served in plastic disposal utensils and bowls whether you order to go or dine in. I've tried the: - Spicy Squid with noodles 8/10 - Tofu with minced pork noodles (summer special!) 8/10 - Hot and Sour Fish soup noodles 8/10 - Cold sweet flower jelly 10/10 - Hunan Fried Tofu 10/10 Even though this place seems to be a fast casual place, I was amazed by the quality of the food. I really enjoyed everything I've eaten here so far and the flavor profile is amazing. The Hunan tofu is so good - I really like the pickled veggies they used. Silky Kitchen has some really great authentic Chinese food and I'm glad I finally tried it. One of their locations is smack dab in the middle of the Broadway district so I opted to have a dinner here. I must say, don't underestimate this place I highly recommend this hole in the wall versus any restaurant that has a fixed pre-theater menu. I got the vegetable dumplings and fish soup which is more than enough food for one person. The vegetable dumplings unfortunately lacked any flavor which is why I knocked off a star but the fish soup was absolutely fantastic. It is a bit sour (I believe they put pickles in it) and is quite different from other soups but it 100% works. There was a generous amount of fish given as well. The noodles, the dumplings, the smoothness of service, it's all very real. My go-to is the dumplings (+ extra dumpling). These are the best dumplings I've ever had. They're worth the wait. I usually supplement this with one of their standard noodle dishes. The fish and soup noodles is good--way more fish than you'd expect. The pork ribs are also wonderful, and I'm someone who often claims that ribs aren't food. Would advise ordering in advance. read more

Quite disappointing after reading all these great reviews. We ordered two bowls, one with chili paste chicken and the other with pork. Flavor was good but it was ridiculously oily. There was also a pretty small amount of meat in the bowls compared to other spots around town. It reminded me of Chinese food you might get in a suburban mall somewhere but not up to the NYC standard. The spice level was excellent. The beef was good quality and not overly fatty. The design inside is cool. It's sleek and very modern and, in a way, contrasts with the traditional-style food. I initially walked right past this shop, it's a bit narrow and tucked back from the street, but I'm glad I decided to go in. I stopped in before heading to a performance at Roundabout's Laura Pels theatre. Silky Kitchen provided the perfect grab and go, yet healthier made-to-order option. The woman at the register was very nice and helped me figure out my order. I went with the noodle soup base and the pepper and pork. I can see this being served over rice, but it was a cold day and I wanted a warm broth. I went with the mild spice level, which had a good kick. If you actually want mild, I'd order this with no spice and the ingredients will do the trick. I came alone and found a seat at a long table, which is one of the most efficient layouts I've seen for solo or small group dining. I grabbed a stool and hung up my jacket on the wall. I waited about 7 minutes for my food to come up. Every dish is served with a piece of bok choy which is what drew me in. This is probably one of my favorite veggies. The portion size was enough to feed two. I couldn't finish it all in the 20 minutes I had before I had to rush to the show. The plates are well worth their value. It's definitely a casual vibe, but the food is quality and the location to the theatre is super convenient. I love that anything on the menu can be ordered over rice or as a noodle soup, I always opt for the noodles but have tried a little of a friend's order over rice. All the soups are delicious, I often end up drinking all of the broth. I also ordered the pork shrimp & chive dumplings once which were okay, but I ate them after being reheated later so I can't give an accurate review of the dumplings when fresh. I also really like the vibe of the restaurant and always end up eating my soup there to get a little break from the office and avoid eating at my desk.
