An avid runner until I was 50, two hip surgeries necessitated that I change my routine to walking and pool running. For close to 29 years, this worked for me. Approaching 80 has brought about new challenges. Recently I had to go to the foot doctor who took X-rays and told me that I have severe arthritis in my left foot. This explained much about some of the difficulties I have been having with my walking regimen. He explained that more than ever I need to be very careful with my walking shoes and explained the type of support my aging feet would need to get me another 10 years of walking the river. When I went into Marathon Sports, I felt truly welcomed and was lucky to have Nina as my sales person. She is just one of the kindest most patient sales people was ever my good fortune to meet. I was a difficult and demanding customer but my experience there leaves me grateful to her and the folks there at Marathon. James Spencer, Cambridge, MA

However, after accumulating quite a few boxes, the salesman came by and told me to put everything away. I was taken aback at his tone and manner of speaking to me. After all, I was being careful about my space and fully intended to buy at least two pairs of shoes from the Barn. Then, I moved to a different section and, this time, took out one pair of sneakers at a time, already intimated by my first experience. As I was sitting there, along comes the owner, who looks at me, shakes his finger and says, 'make sure you pick up and put away your shoes'. I was reminded of how it felt to be scolded in elementary school - I was mortified. Terrible service and very very rude salespersons. Why are they even in the business or working with the public? All was not lost as Sylvia was helping us and offered several different options for my mom to try. She was super helpful, even helping my mom get the shoes on and lacing them up. I can't remember the last time I've seen that level of assistance in a shoe store. She was absolutely fantastic with my mom, answering questions and even showing her a special way of lacing her sneakers to help prevent heel slippage. My mom ended up getting two pairs of shoes that she said were so comfortable, and raved about Sylvia to the woman at the register. I took a star off as I'm a size 11ish and can rarely find shoes that fit me-most shoes only had sizes up to 10 available, but I'm so glad my mom had such a great experience today.

Used their test socks (yes, they have test socks!) that match the ones they sell in the store so you can try them on with your shoes. Got useful feedback and recommendations for other brands of shoes that would be a good fit if I wanted to run longer distances. All in all, I left the store with some new socks (Balega silver), a foot roller (Nano X), and a brand new pair of shoes (ASIC Gel-DS Trainer 24) for under $200.
