My husband's standouts were carrot, and a special Biscoff flavor. There was plenty of street parking and I old schooled the meter with a shiny quarter. The business is next door to Aroy Thai Garden (also vegetarian). Upon entering the brightly lit and freshly painted shop you will see a unique opening between the two businesses. Keeping the vegan flowing freely! There is seating at the front, near the windows and the cases filled with goodies are toward the back. We were immediately welcomed. The gentleman behind the counter excitedly greeted us. My son and I looked over the cookies, bars and cupcakes and finally decided on a tray of 4 cupcakes. We were here for my husband that does not eat dairy, most nuts and a list of other things. Before I made my picks I discussed what the nut free options were and when I stumped the nice man, he called his wife, the baker. Kudos to him for going above and beyond. We picked up Cookies and Cream, Boston Cream, Triple Chocolate....and I can't remember the 4th....but he ate it and enjoyed it! While I didn't actually try any of the sweets, my husband said that what he has had was good. He was told to savor them, because they were not inexpensive. Definitely worth the trip and the splurge. You can taste the soul and love in every bite. The cakes are denser than regular bakery cake, as pound cakes should be. But they are also moist and just perfect. I loved everything we got, lemon pound cake, pound cups in the flavors of coconut (their best seller), strawberry shortcake and strawberry, lemon cheesecake with a crunch. Overall, my favorite were the coconut pound cups. I'm really loving coconut cakes right now. They are in East Hartford, which I feel like most people aren't usually in unless you live or have something specific to do there but I highly recommend taking the special trip if you want a wonderful cake. Almost as good as the custom cupcakes are their clever CT inspired names: Plain Twain, Mohegan Mocha, Charter Oak Chocolate, Colony Carrot, Yankee Lemon & more. Luckily, Murphy has never worked in Hartford and tried The Cupcake Brake. I also doubt that Murphy ever tried a cupcake or there would be a "except if there is a cupcake involved" clause to all his laws. The Cupcake Brake is a brightly coloured yellow truck that parks in different areas of Hartford each day. You can either leave getting a cupcake to the serendipitous chance of running into the truck... or if you're more aggressive about your cupcake hunting you can sign up for the email updates (on the website) or follow TheCupcakeBrake on Twitter. Larry (or as I call him "The Cupcake Man") makes phenomenal little cupcakes that really pack a powerful punch. How's that for accidental alliteration? Upon arriving at the cupcake truck you're met with an absurd amount of choices as you choose the type of cupcake base, the frosting and whether or not you'd like it filled (and if so, with what!). Decisions, decisions. My first impression upon lifting my cupcake from its nondescript white paper bag was that I should go back and order one more. It seemed smaller than the monstrous ones that have become so popular (Crumbs..). I was wrong however, and I was completely satisfied with one. The frosting was buttery and rich and not overwhelmingly sweet. The cupcake base was moist and dense, a nice contrast from the frosting. I'd ordered peanut butter filling that was nice and nutty, but I think I'll have to try the marshmallow or Boston creme next time. I finished my cupcake and had to fight the urge to try capturing the icing that had been left behind inside the bag. Take that Murphy.
