However, although there is a good variety of ingredients, the overall flavour was surprisingly lack-lustre (not absent but not quite igniting the taste buds as you might expect from Moroccan cuisine). Especially since this street seems quite Moroccan influenced with grocery stores and shops selling traditional goods. But this establishment does a very good impression of a grotty kebab shop. Upon entering to see my friends, instantly my morale hit the floor as the place is so uninspiring and depressing. They were out of half the items on the cheap, plastic laminate menu. Basically you could have tagine, or... tagine. The service was slow, bordering on the ridiculous, as two of us got our food and the rest half an hour later. Everything came in drips and drabs, as if the chef was very slowly making one dish at a time. My vegetable tagine was totally overcooked and my chips undercooked. Asking everyone else how they enjoyed their food illicited blank stares and 'ummm it's okay'. All I ate was some warmed up pita bread and overdone carrots. Going to a little hole-in -the-wall place like this, you hope to find amazing food that you can tell all your friends about and Yelp it to the point it becomes totally popular and therefore uncool. But no, the food, much like the exterior and interior, was bad. I couldn't even summon up the energy to write a funny, cool, or useful review. Consider this a public service announcement.

Meh…read more Depending on how hungry you are, you could have two perspectives on this place. 1) Quirky, rustic and authentic OR 2) Understaffed, slow and bordering on being an overstretched local. I wasn't massively hungry, so I was in the first school of thought about this place and very open-minded about the possibility of unearthing a local gem. We (the gang of Yelpers who were here for the latest CMYE - Around the World in 80 Meals event) started with lovely warmed pita bread and an eggplant spread (unfortunately I didn't catch the name of it). Yum. The spread was so full of flavour, I could've eaten just that alone. We also ordered potatoes with a harissa sauce on them, that were far, far, far too spicy. Think the kind of spicy that overtakes and negates any other flavour in the dish. The kind of spicy that makes you urgently reach for whatever drink you have in front of you (in this case, a very refreshing glass of moroccan peppermint tea). Bad times. I ordered a lamb tagine with couscous for my main and was pretty excited about this, as I'd never had tagine before. The tagine arrived piping hot and the liquid in the pot was still bubbling, like it was still cooking. I hate eating super hot foods (goes way back to burning the roof of my mouth eating pizza when I was a kid), so I waited about 10 minutes for it to cool down. The lamb was nice and tender, but the vegetables was very overcooked, to the point of being mushy. The broth was okay, but didn't have the depth of flavour you'd expect from such an earthy dish. In all honesty, I'm voting for a do over in my first tagine experience. I'm erasing this tagine from my mind and have just become a tagine virgin again. Oh yeah - BRING CASH! They don't take cards and the closest cash machine in the evenings is a 5 minute walk away across from the Portobello Market building.

Walking into a dark but very inviting Mediterranean hot spot not really knowing what to expect I was greeted by nothing but love by the owner who is also the front of the house host, waiter and historian on the food. He exudes passion for what he does; which providing a wonderful authentic Moroccan home cooked meal. His approach is to make you like a real friend or loved one. He did not let me down. The dishes presented themselves. He used authentic Moroccan crockery to prepare a present some of the most flavorful food I've ever experienced in the city of London. As I always say, I'll set your expectations for what you want as you come in to any place I write about. It's a small intimate dinning experience where you should bring friends and loved ones. The decor will take you to a different place, away from the hustle and bustle of London, to a foreign land that has exotic foods prepared with love and the ultimate patron experience in mind. I had Moroccan wine for the first time and wont be he last. It was absolutely fabulous, I wasn't sure what to expect but I have to put Spain on notice. Wife had the 16 gbp chicken with prune dish I have the18 gbp lamb dish, both of which came with vegetables and a serving of couscous. I love the lamb dish as the prunes and prune juice livened up the meat dishes adding considerably to The taste of the dishes. Only problem was that this serving sizes on the small side. We said at the table leaving others to sit on the pillows on the rug floor. Not as nimble as in my younger days and would have had trouble and getting up off the floor after eating.

So many chic shops but they were all closed for a Sunday evening. Took Northern Line to get here and it's a short 3 minute walk from the station. Ordered the chicken tagine, mixed mezza for two so everyone had something to try, I think it's an easy solution if you are not an expert in Moroccan food. Then finally tagine lamb. It's named after tagine, why stray from it? It's a BYOB. So bring your own wine. Please. The dessert was on the simple side but they provided Moroccan tea for the table on the house, lovely and tastier than the Lebanese version. I liked it more. The restaurant played hipster dance music from Morocco and I must admit, it was quite happening. I wish I took down the record name, I'm sure I'd be able to find it on Soundcloud later. The most notable thing about the restaurant besides the very good food was the decor. The mixture of beautiful lighting hanging off the ceiling was mesmerizing. I took as many photos of the lighting as the food. Over the course of last 18 years since I've been coming to London, finding good Moroccan restaurants has always been one of my must to-dos. This did not disappoint. The entire restaurant had a very authentic ethnic feel to it, which in my mind is something I've not seen before in the States. The ceilings are covered in gorgeous colourful chandeliers that you would find walking through a market in Morocco, if fact sitting in the restaurant I kind of felt that I was back in Morocco! We ordered houmous and bread for starters which was lovely and for main I had lamb tagine with cous cous (I can't remember the name). My friend had the fish tagine and both dishes were served beautifully. The portion sizes were really generous too! The only down side is that they don't serve alcohol, so I would pop to the local off licence or Sainsbury's and grab a bottle of wine before going there. Also whilst we were there, it was the birthday of some other group, and the waiters put on some traditional music and played a drum whilst bringing out the birthday cake!
