Oh Sidebar, oh how it disappoints me to have to write this about you a once formerly favorite downtown located watering hole of mine. But, all good things must come to an end and I believe so has Sidebar's reign as the underrated go to bar of downtown Boston for a place to grab a few beers, have a great meal and have still have plenty of money left in your pocket.
First off, I want to say that the food is still decent here. Also, the draft beer is still cold and the glasses were clean. But, I'm afraid to say this is where it all goes downhill from here. The service was by far the worst service that I have ever received at any bar or restaurant that I have ever been to. When myself and my companion arrived there were only two other people in the place so finding a seat at the bar was very easy. We were quickly served a drink by the bartender and that's where it went downhill. Shortly after this a few regulars came in and the bartender was nonexistent from this point on. The bartender who along with the "general manager" of the restaurant were the only ones working the FOH. The bartender must have only been behind the bar for maybe 5 minutes in the next hour and a half that we were there. He periodically went outside to smoke a cigarette with his friends, went outback to chit chat with his friends and even poured himself a beer to enjoy while customers were waiting to be served. When behind the bar he was more concerned about the NASCAR race or telling the general manager that last call was going to be at 8:30 so he could get out of work rather than servicing any of the customers and putting in an honest effort at his job. The general manager wasn't any better. She was sitting at the bar the entire time on her laptop taking care of personal business, calling employees to schedule future shifts and taking care of her upcoming vacation plans for later in the week. I ordered a sandwich after finishing my first beer. I had to ask the bartender twice to place my order. When my sandwich was ready from the cook, I could hear the bell go off in the kitchen and then the general manager yelled over to me that "my sandwich was ready." At this point the bartender was outside hanging out with his friends and I quickly reply back, "do you want me to go back into the kitchen to get my sandwich." She gives me a fake laugh and says "Don't worry I'll get it for me." I don't know about anyone else, but I have never been almost asked to have to go back to the kitchen and run my own food to myself. If Jon Taffer was here to witness this, he surely would have lost his mind and probably fired everyone on the spot rightfully so. At this point I actually thought I was on the set of bar rescue and I was the "secret customers" that are supposed to witness the bad bar behavior.
Well, in typical Sidebar fashion the food was above average for a bar/pub. But, again this is where it continues to go downhill. My companion was ready for a second drink and I had to look around for 10 minutes for the bartender and ask twice to get her another drink. Also, when finished with my sandwich. I bartender was more focused on his friends at the bar then clearing my empty plate or asking if I wanted the check. I had to ask several times to get my check and once I did, it took a long time to swipe my credit card. I actually felt bad for the people working here and their incompetence as a service provider. Other things overhead from being there: A customer came in and asked about the $3 shot special, which of course the bartender had no idea what shots were included in this special. The general manager just told him to make a Kamikaze, which of course he didn't know how to. Also, overhead the general manager shush the bartender about a cleanliness issue behind the bar regarding a wine or liquor bottle. In conclusion, the once mighty sidebar has quickly become a disaster and will likely be "as seen on TV" on Bar Rescue probably sooner versus later. read more
