Went twice after organizing a group of 20 people for a meetup.First time was alright even though it was only the bartenders serving for the whole place. Second time...well thats was the LAST time.EVER. I was waiting on my group and I got there early.I dont drink alcohol but friends do.Even though the food was mediocre at best,I do order but wanted to wait till more arrived, Friends were running late and I had already been there for about 45 min walking in and out to see if I saw anybody I knew. there were maybe 5 people in the whole entire bar,I sat down at a empty bar for 5 min when I was asked if by a blonde haired young woman(later found out she was a manager) asked if I wanted to order something.I said I was actually waiting on the rest of my people and would be ordering food once they came, She said in a very snotty voice"well usually people in a bar order drinks....sooo Im just SAYIN"". I was kinda shocked and stunned at the rudeness.I just answered by saying hey Im with that group of people that came last week and Im waiting on them.". We decided to go here because our Airbnb was located basically directly above this place. Everything was fairly standard, but nothing was bad. Prices seem a bit high for the food, but the food is good regardless (we were on vacation so we didn't mind much). 4/5 only because our waitress was barely ever around. What is a much better categorical explanation for this joint would be "sports bar" as that is what it actually is. I had a horrible experience. I came here with my friends on a SATURDAY NIGHT and we got here right around midnight. Every website online says they close at 1 am but I arrived with my friends and the bartender started screaming at us as soon as we opened the door "We are closed. Get out!!" But the sign said "opened" when we got here and the person at the bar was ridiculously rude. I'm extremely disappointed after being excited. This is my go to pre-concert stop whenever I catch a show at The Tabernacle, a couple blocks away. This bar has character, good prices, nice staff, interesting drink options, lots of TVs and quite possibly the best wings I've ever tasted. I really enjoy coming here for everything- food, drinks and atmosphere. Try the lemon pepper wings (AH MAZ ING) and the bocadillo (Cuban sandwich appetizer), that should give you a good understanding of the tastiness of the noshes here. As for drinks ask for anything with the ginger liquor. Come here with the appropriate expectations- it's a dive bar, people come as they are, many of them smoke and aren't pretentious about things. The long, thin room gives it a very urban feel and it's located down a lightly traveled street. All of these things give Sidebar a funky, urban vibe that can't be replicated by those trendy, fakey-fakey bars. I enjoy chillin' here. read more

The Sidebar--an orange and blue sheep in a flock of red and black. Yes, SEC fans, this is a Gator bar so come here on a Fall Saturday at your peril. However, as a graduate of the University of Florida, the Sidebar does me proud with it's unabashedly love of the Gators. The owners (both Gators) have even taken it upon themselves to honor the fine, though extinct, tradition of half-time kamikazes, free for the shooting as long as you're clad correctly. Eh, I've even seen them give the shots to a friend in an Ohio State shirt. Ah, booze, the great equalizer. When not cheering on the Gators, the Sidebar trades in its orange and stays with the Blueland. Thrashers fans meet before and after games to wax rhapsodic on icing and shoot outs and wingmen and, I dunno, mullets I guess. (As merely a casual fan of hockey, my knowledge of it is as shallow as a sorority selection committee.) The menu continues on with its Florida roots; it's the kind you would find in a bar in Ybor City. Cuban sandwiches, burgers and wings. I suggest the Big Pig, a Cuban doused in Williamson Brothers BBQ sauce. Two great tastes that taste great together. So, on the surface, this place seems to be a standard sports bar. Typical bar food, tons of TVs and drink specials. Unfortunately that's about where the preparation seems to have stopped. There are at least 40 TVs in this place but apparently they only have 4 cable boxes. This means that they can only have 4 different things playing at a time. Totally understandable in a small place but they were packed so it pretty much negated any benefit the myriad TVs provided. The menu - pro tip to management. If you don't have the ability to make an item, take it off the menu. There is an entire section on the menu devoted to pizza and, guess what, they haven't had pizza in years according to the waitress. Pretty irritating considering it's literally a quarter of the front page of the menu. The beer - they were out of 420 and yuengling. On a Sunday. During football season. How? The service - felt like asking for a favor from a distant acquaintance every time we asked for something. The request to change the channel was met with a heavy sigh and an 'I'll see what I can do.' It was like a surgeon on general hospital. Ridiculous. Overall I guess this place did bring me the food items I eventually settled on and they also seemed to keep the place cleanish so it did it's a niche. Welp. This is literally a dive bar folks. But like, with lots of sports playing. I was trying to find a place to watch the mid-week MMA fight and heard about this place, I think they were probably the only ones showing it. Anywho, I came here alone on a Wednesday night and I had fun. PPL are very friendly and drunk here. It's like Cheers, where nobody knew my name because I was new. There are plenty of screens to watch basketball, football, baseball, mma. The major games get the big screen time, but if the big ones simultaneously. The drinks are good, cocktails are cheap for downtown, about $8 or so. The food is nothing to write home about. This is a cool place located off Poplar St., which is a tiny street off Forsyth (in Downtown Atl.). It is the epitome of a dive bar with a darkly lit bar area that includes a jukebox. I utilize it to play my fave tunes. Also, the bar is owned by U of Florida fans so I suppose when football season is here there are a lot of Florida fans there... UGA fans, don't let that deter you, I have been here about 10 times and only seen that nasty Blue and Orange colored attire one time (: GO DAWGS). Ok, back to the review... This place is neat because you go in and you think you see the entire bar... But wait! There's more: Downstairs! It consists of pool tables, air hockey, a basketball shoot around, more tables, and a punchey video game thing (you will see what I mean). Oh yeah, and how can I forget, they have NTN Trivia on a live screen as well as other games like Texas Holdem. Cool place. I like it. I love this little bar! I have tried and tried to get to Sidebar over the years, mostly after Tabernacle events, and just got there last night. Why? I usually can't find it! I'm glad my group and I kept looking, because we were treated to a great bar. All the TV's were focused on last night's big UGA football game, the service was excellent and the food was tasty. Towards the end of the night, we noticed the bartender stocking a variety of RedBull that we hadn't seen before (blue stripe on top, red stripe on the bottom). After asking, we learned it's called RedCola. It's a mixture of traditional Red Bull and cola nut, which apparently provides a ton of energy. The bartender then whipped up some shots for us to try totally FREE of charge! The shot was just OK (RedCola and cherry vodka, called a Cherry Cola...hee hee), but I think that was awesome of the bartender to pimp a product and give us a try for free. I would recommend walking the 3 blocks to Sidebar if you're in the downtown neighborhood. It will be completely worth it. read more

Sidebar has an interesting layout. We were in one of the two closed off areas with TV's to watch the superbowl. We kept asking various waiters to turn on the speaker that was above our TV (at least four times) so we could hear the game properly, but they kept forgetting and it never happened. The servers were nice though at least. I ordered french fries and tried a friend's southwestern spring rolls. Both were good (and good to go with the continuously flowing pitchers.) This was a great spot to watch the superbowl because the whole bar was into it, but it wasn't outrageously crowded like a bar that might be having an official superbowl "party." I can't remember exactly what the prices were... We were all splitting pitchers and I had personally put 3 pitchers of 420 on my tab. At the end of the night I had my 420 pitchers and fries plus two Shock Top pitchers that I didn't order (?) and my tab was a little over $100. Obviously I didn't want to randomly pay for someone else's two pitchers, but by the end of the night the bar was a crazy mess that would have taken at least an hour to approach, and because of the result of the super bowl I was way too heartbroken to stick around and deal with the mistake, so I just signed it. I went here with some friends after a photo stroll downtown, and I have to say, my initial impressions were exceeded. When we walked in, I was taken aback by the obvious sports bar feel the place had; which is usually a clear indicator that I need to find somewhere else to go. But, we managed to find a spot in the alley outside, which was actually quite cute, and had our dinner in peace. The buffalo chicken sandwich was pretty tasty, and my friends enjoyed their BBQ chicken pizza as well. I would eat here again, but only if we could sit outside. Major university nearby. Check. Smoke-laden atmosphere. Check. Relatively cheap pitchers. Check. Loud obnoxious music. Check. Bathroom in need of serious repair. Check. Confirmed -- dive bar. And that's OK. I discovered Sidebar when my office let out early and the communal message was delivered -- "Happy Hour at Sidebar!" Gathering my belongings, I wandered down to this place tucked in between two alleys and immediately discovered two things. The first floor is too smokey for non-smoking human beings. The second floor is too loud for conversation. Between those two, I opted for loud rather than lung cancer and joined my co-workers for happy hour. Upstairs is a set of high top tables opposite a long bar. I think the name of the joint is more derived from the upstairs than the downstairs, and for good reason -- most of the drinkers from 6pm to 7pm seem to gather here. Downstairs, it's booths, pool tables, larger tables with chairs, and those Home Depot project bathrooms. The music system downstairs is ALWAYS loud, but the staff is generally willing to turn it down a little if you ask. Speaking of the staff, they're cordial and pretty good about keeping a table of 20+ overworked developers and their "next round's on me" managers happy. The beer pitchers are pretty cheap -- nothing exorbitant, and they have a decent selection on tap and in bottles. Don't come here expecting Brickstore selection. This IS a dive bar. We've had a bit of the food as well -- the tots and hot wings are always good. I have also sampled the Cuban sandwich appetizer, which is basically 2 Cubans cut to look like sliders. It's not the best Cuban sandwich in the world, but it's good for bar food. I DO have to remember to bring a change of shirts the next time I visit sidebar. Found Sidebar by mistake while browsing around the downtown area for the first time. I'm new here. Hello Atlanta. Sidebar is a narrow college bar with a plastic menu dedicated to Cuban food. I thought this was strange but kudos for picking a flavor and sticking to it rather than trying to be everything to everybody's taste buds. You are going to get exactly what you order. No frills. It will be hot and something you can make at home. Friendly service with personality - everyone was attentive. Smoking is allowed which didn't bother me. Your basic beer offering in gloriously clean glasses. They offer a poker game played with a hand held device and you can play tournament style Texas Hold 'Em on two big screens hanging behind the bar. I ordered through Uber Eats, so can only comment on the food and not the atmosphere or service. I ordered the Super Cuban and Hot Zarella cheese sticks. The Cuban was huge! It's definitely super sized so get the regular Cuban unless you want lunch for tomorrow. It was very good and pressed enough to be slightly crispy on the out side, and melted cheese on the inside. They do not play with the pork; there is a lot, and it is really flavorful. The Hot Zarella was also very good and a generous size. I love the jalapeno in the breading, and the sauce that comes with it adds a nice spicy flavor. Will definitely order again! read more

Blah. This place is just 'ok'. I wasn't too impressed, nor was I extremely disappointed. As I sat and to eat my burger, I got a heaping lung full of cigarette smoke to help wash down the bunk barbecue sauce that was barely poured on my barbecue and cheddar sandwich. The only saving grace was the french fries, and being in good company of my friends. Oh yeah, the service here sucks. I'm sorry, but I thought that a good server was supposed to be attentive to her diner. I usually review restaurants as bars, but this time I'm reviewing a bar as a restaurant. It's a pretty good lunch spot, especially if you want to duck into a private place that's in the middle of downtown, but just enough off the beaten path that you can order a beer at lunch if you gotta have it. I can get past the unfortunate ghetto shithole location (and I mean yecchhh), and the sticky-floored, smoky dive bar atmosphere...I actually like dive bars. I feel comfortable in them, so I guess I'm not a classy guy. As dive bar food goes, the food here is very good. Nothing is too greasy, including the monstrous pile of tater tots that come with your sandwich. There are numerous variations of the Cuban sandwich, all good, notably the Tampa Cuban (add salami) and the Blanquito (chicken version). Order a burger and tots here, and then go order a burger and tots at Vortex, and let me know which of the two is hysterically overrated, especially by the Yelp "experts". The apathetic slacker attitude of the waitstaff feels far more authentic here than with those emo/goth/whatever you call them these days over at Vortex. The go-fuck-off thing at Vortex feels a bit forced at times, and I don't get the sincerity like I used to when my waitress tells me to die after I ask for a Diet Coke refill. That reminds me, I need to write another Vortex review. Oh yea, they have Playmakers here, and TVs at every table. Usually a good poker game going on at lunch. Food would be 4 stars as compared to other dive bar food in Atlanta, but I cannot completely ignore the Apocalyptic, dystopian location and ambu-lance, so 3 stars overall. read more

Sidebar is a great place to grab a beer, grab some food, watch a game (or two) or play one. It a convenient spot to meet up before or after a basketball or hockey game, to avoid the traffic. The have a good selection of beer on draft, great bartenders that make some great mixed drinks and great atmosphere in the front and back rooms. The front is more of a party and the back is a bit more relaxed, but that depends on the crowd and the night. The have a great menu of appetizers, burgers, pressed sandwiches. My favorites are the wings and the cuban sandwich with black beans and rice. Also, I can't leave out their french fries. There are TV's all over, so wherever you sit you will be able to watch the game you want. Each booth in the back has it's own tv, so you can watch multiple games just by turning your head. The also have tv's dedicated to trivia and poker as well as a couple of tv's with xbox's along with wireless controllers that allow you to play right from your table. The back room also has pool tables, air hockey and basketball games, if that's your thing. Overall, this is a great place to hang, drink, eat and people watch, enough said. read more

It's really a 3.5 rounded up to a 4. It is definitely a dive bar, and I like dive bars. I have never hung out here at night, but have been plenty of times in the afternoon after class. The drinks are decently priced, the service has always been pretty good, and the food is...not great but not the worst bar food ever. Ordered from Zifty on a cold evening. There were only 2 yelp reviews so I thought we would give it a try. Wasn't even edible. We ordered the tots covered with cheddarjck cheese and bacon. This was not cheddar jack cheese. This was the yucky non-cheese that cheap vendors pour onto nachos. Yuck. Also ordered their most popular sandwich - the Cuban. Now my guy us Latin so we know a good Cuban. This was NOT. Flavorless and the pork actually tasted bad. The only edible item we ordered was buffalo chicken fingered - they barely passed the edible test. Shoestring fryers were sides for the two entrees. Don't waste your taste buds. I just blew $47!!! Great divey spot to watch sports, eat food, and drink booze. Sports: There are a bunch of TVs, including a really gigantic one against one wall. Wings: YES they are delicious and are my go-to order here Cuban: Pretty decent, goes great with black beans on the side Tots: Done right every time Mojo chicken sandwich: Boring Chicken tenders: Nothing special, but good Booze: They always have some kind of drink special. The last time I was there, they had "cereal shots," which were different concoctions all made with Rumchata, which sort of tastes like the sweet milk you're left with after you eat all of your sugary cereal. I had the "Cinnamon Toast Crunch" one, which was the Rumchata with Fireball cinnamon whiskey. It was awesome. Service is good; I've never had a problem. The bartenders are usually pretty friendly. The main area can get crowded during big games or on Friday/Saturday nights, but there is a much larger area downstairs with lots of seating, pool tables, and skeeball. It's a fun place to hang out and while away the night (or day, whatever, I'm not here to judge). I usually end up here after a football game or other downtown event. Fair warning, though, you will come out of there smelling like old grease. Oh, and smoking is allowed. Which also means you will never run into any kids here. When you're in downtown Atlanta, you probably want to stay away from "the Underground". That being said, Sidebar is unfortunately close to the Underground to interest the rift raft that frequent the area. We only went there on a Thursday night. There was a Motley Crew of people coming and going. I'm sure that the vibe is different during the weekend, but I can only imagine what that would mean in clientele. Don't misunderstand my 2 star rating. We really didn't get a good feel for the Sidebar. I can't really give it the accolade or criticism that it may require. A decent dive bar in the middle of downtown. Stick to bottled drinks. Don't try to do anything too fancy on the menu; the simpler items are better. Decent, helpful, sometimes slow staff. Sometimes they open a little later than their posted hours. Great after a failed exam at GSU, a stressful meeting in one of the many office buildings nearby, or a trip to the Fulton County superior court- all conveniently jammed in a 0.2 mile radius of this place. To put it simply, if you must stop at a bar on your way home from downtown Atlanta, and really think you can't make it back to home base, this is a perfectly good spot to drink on your way home. If you feel like walking north about a quarter mile on Peachtree, there are several pubs that are not as dive'sh. read more

I came here one Sunday because Slice (next door) was closed. Pretty decent dive bar with decent drink prices. Just a tad small in the front area, and I didn't know that there was a "back" area until after I had already left. Good vibes overall, but the food is TERRIBLE. By no means should you order a Reuben, it's just generic slices of cheese over slices of even more generic ham for $9. NOT a Reuben by the traditional definition. And they charged me $2 just for a small side of au jus. If I'm in the area in the future, I'll just stick with going to Slice. read more

This bar has some of the worst bar food in town. I can't think of anything to recommend on the menu, so I'll just advise you to eat before you go to Sidebar. What works about Sidebar? Well, for one thing it's one of the only options for after-work drinks in the Fairly Poplar district. It's one of only two sports bars downtown, the other being the always crowded and equally mediocre Jocks and Jill's in the CNN Center. Sidebar does have retro video games, including Frogger, Galaga and Donkey Kong, plus air hockey and a couple of pool tables. Do not try and hang out in the back room late on the weekends. Sidebar earned an extra star for their Florida football events. I arrived an hour and a half before kickoff and enjoyed excellent free pre-game drinks (Coke and 1792 bourbon; Hornitos margaritas). There were burgers and hot dogs available for free too, an offer which my carnivorous fellow Gators happily accepted. At halftime, everyone wearing UF gear or colors got a free shot of UV Blue. This time around, I avoided the pizza and instead tried the garden salad, a reasonable size for five bucks and made with crisp, sweet red bell pepper chunks. I also had a plate of plantain chips, which were of decent quality and quantity, about as good as a bag of Chifles: tasty and worth ordering, but unaddictive. After halftime, I added a plate of cheesy tots to my tab, which were the least impressive of the day and yet still good. But it's not just the free booze that made for a memorable afternoon. Sitting around watching the game with other Gators means instant camaraderie, and by the fourth quarter we were on tater-tot-stealing terms with each other. The halftime raffle was fun, too, and one of my new acquaintances won 10 Braves tickets for tomorrow's Mets game. Since that's more than he needed, I ended up coming home with four of them. For the area, where there's a serious dearth of good/fun/trendy or really ANY restaurants, I'd say the place is a nice little oasis. Especially when the wait at Ted's is over an hour and you're about the see a show at the Tabernacle. It's dark inside--REALLY dark. Your eyes eventually adjust, but I think a bit more light would make the place a little less dingy. Because I don't think dingy is what they're going for--dive bar, yes, and a dive bar where they care about serving palatable dive bar food. We had some Stellas to drink--fine if a tad stale. The draft beer list wasn't my favorite, since it didn't have any of my American standards on it (Bud Light, Mich Light, even a PBR would've sufficed). Cuban sandwich with fries was really good. Unfortunately that was my husband's plate--I had buffalo tenders with a salad. The tenders were okay, salad felt like an afterthought (like tomatoes they'd chopped for salsa, pieces of cucumber better suited to gazpacho, and weird wilted iceburg). Staff was mostly very nice--one dude was asserting his coolness to the extreme of never altering his stoic facial expression or monotone voice. But I guess there's always one of those in your neighborhood bar. Verdict: Out of necessity, you're in the area, and you're cool with (well done) bar food and a beer, YES. But is it a standout? Nope.
