This is an authentic Japanese restaurant. The owners and all of their staff are wonderful people. They can't do enough to make your visit a marvelous experience. Our server last evening was a beautiful young lady (Kelly?) dressed in fantastic authentic garb. She was pleasant, efficient, attentive, and always smiling. My wife enjoyed dumplings and crab cakes, I had an excellent version of lamb chops and our guests enjoyed "Shrimp Tempura" and "Anniversary Sushi". Everything was perfectly prepared. We ordered the tataki, hamachi, tempura and a salmon hosomaki at Shuhei Restaurant, and all were disappointing. The salmon and hamachi lacked freshness, and the tataki was let down by a sauce that was simply unpleasant--I ended up adding wasabi just to make the dish palatable. I wonder if a chef actually has tasted this dish. The tempura was simply a tragedy - a large pile of limp and uninspired fried things. The unagi kabayaki $30 had three very large pieces of super juicy soft fatty delicious saltwater eel and sides of carrots, green beans, and sprouts. Fantastic for eel lovers who usually have to just pick nigiri mini pieces. The Chirashizushi tokyo style $32 was a beautiful bowl of nigiri pieces over rice. Also fantastic and fresh. Had an amazing dinner at Shuhei with my husband. We had the crab cakes as an appetizer and they were delicious. I had the seafood noodles with shrimp. So fresh. So good. This has been a family favorite since I was a kid and I'm glad that I can still enjoy it when I visit family. The parking lot can be hard to spot and the restaurant isn't visible from the street, you have to drive in and then the entrance to the restaurant is on the other side with the parking lot (it makes more sense when you see it in person). Keep your eyes out if you're stopping by for the first time. The sushi is delicious and over the years I can't tell you how many times we've enjoyed take out and dine in here. It does have an older feel, but is a great spot for a celebratory meal, date or time with family. I've been to Shuhei a few times. I found it to be subpar. I have got deluxe sashimi and sushi combo, Shuhei sashimi platter and sukiyaki. The deluxe sashimi and sushi combo's sushi rolls never had any taste to it. It felt like the rolls you would buy from a supermarket. Their salmon sashimi sometimes tasted weird and had this slimy texture. Not fresh at all. However, the yellowtail and white tuna sashimi were pretty fresh and fatty. Yesterday, we got some gyoza. They were fried perfectly; but, my boyfriend noticed a few of them had a weird smell to it. Last time, I got sukiyaki and it was not savory at all. It was so sweet that I was struggling to finish it. I feel like I could get a better quality sashimi at an all you can eat sushi and it would be cheaper than here. read more

Recently stopped in for dinner and did not have the best dining experience. We ordered a variety of menu items and the food was sub par and was not flavorful. To start we ordered the Rib Nikomi, we also ordered two sushi rolls, the David's Special and South Pacific. For our entree we shared the Scampi Bean. The scampi tasted like it was overcooked, however the dish came with noodles that were good. The sushi rolls were very bland and didn't really have much flavor and the spare ribs were bland aside from bbq sauce that was rubbed on the meat. The service however was excellent. Our server was very attentive, checked on us often and delivered each item hot. The restaurant itself was a nice size and there were a few diners enjoying a meal as well. Overall I would have to say I was disappointed in my meal. The flavors just were not there and for the price I was expecting a bit more. I unfortunately would not be dining here again. read more

This is a little place that I found after I failed to find a good sushi place last night. I'm visiting from California and I had a taste for sushi. This is a nice little restaurant. It is owned by a very pleasant gentleman. The sushi looked wonderful, and the food smells delicious. I decided to do some thing that I don't usually do which is to order, the biggest pre-selected sushi/sashimi that they have. I couldn't wait to see what the chef prepared for me because they got to choose the items. I can't say how disappointed I was at how much tuna was on here , not a favorite, and the poor selection. I'm really disappointed with the small rolls and mother really special. Honestly nothing on here is what I would've ordered with the exception of the salmon and yellow tail. Well, the selection is good in general at this restaurant, and the quality is good. I would recommend ordering what you want and not letting the chef choose for you. I'm giving four stars because the restaurant is nice, the people were very nice and the quality was very good. I would eat here again, but this time I would be very specific as to what I was ordering and would order what I want. read more

No complaints about the service or food, food/sushi tastes fresh (not great, not bad, but good enough) and service is very prompt. They have been around for over 30 years so they keep trucking along The only downside is by 10pm, on Saturday night, the place is completely empty/deserted. The kitchen/bar closes at 9:30pm so you can't even order, if you want to. Desert selection is non-existent, mochi ice cream is the only thing that they have. read more

I stumbled across this place by accident at the tail end of a work day and I was hungry. My friends, I went hard and grabbed the Deluxe Sushi and Sashimi Combo. I'm a nigiri/sashimi person so this was perfect and quite massive. You'd hope for nothing less if it costs $47.00. It came with a salad with ginger dressing and miso - both of which were typical and tasty. The sashimi was lovely and a good thickness, as was the nigiri. Overall, no regrets. Their menu is quite large and they seem to have a large interior. When you see the sign and pull into the parking lot - you're not crazy, the restaurant is on the other side of that building so just drive around. read more

There is absolutely no way I would've ever known about Shuhei without yelp. It's a restaurant attached to the back of an office building, which from the outside, it's pretty nondescript. When you walk in, you immediately I know that's gonna be a good Japanese restaurant. I came with one other person and we were able to be seated immediately without reservations, when we came here around 6:30 PM on Thursday. The restaurant wasn't too crowded, but there were a reasonable amount of people already seated. We decided to order a bottle of sake, and we asked the waitress for a recommendation. She asked us whether we preferred sweeter ones or not, and she helped us choose a sake. See picture for which one. I really enjoy the sake, and definitely think a bottle is the way to go, since it was only double the price of that of a glass. For appetizers, we started with edamame, tempura, and Agedashi tofu. They were all very good: The edamame and tempura were pretty standard, nothing super special. The agedashi tofu was delicious, though I wasn't a crazy fan of all of the ginger on top. Luckily I was able to move it to the side. For the rolls, we started with the scallop nigiri. This was delicious, the scallop was thick and sweet, and it's always one of my favorites. I thought the spicy tuna was pretty underwhelming, it wasn't the classic spicy tuna where the spice is mixed in with the tuna, instead it was a chunk of tuna with spicy mayo mix into the rice. I felt like that roll overall was pretty dry. We had the fire cracker roll and the South Pacific roll from the specialty roles. I honestly absolutely loved both. The fire cracker is definitely for people who like a little bit of spicy, the jalapeños were a fun textural touch. The South Pacific was also very delicious, and a fun twist on a shrimp tempura roll. I do feel like overall, all the sushi included a bit too much rice, but that's to be expected when you're in the Midwest. Our server was attentive, and always came over to refill the water in our glasses. All the food from the kitchen came out pretty quickly, I definitely had no complaints about the service. I think it's super cute how the waitresses wear kimonos. I definitely plan on returning to this restaurant! I'd love to try more of the rolls, as well as some of their hot dishes as well, since they have a pretty extensive menu. We definitely recommend for someone looking for a great sushi restaurant or a Japanese meal at a reasonable price point and with reasonable quantities! read more

Love this place! It's hard to fine, but once you get in to the commercial complex and park in the back, it's a very unexpected restaurant. It's hands-down better than Benihana, which is competitor across the street. They're a full sushi bar and have some of the best pho/ramen in the area. The waitresses are often dressed in traditional Japanese attire, and have a great sake and beer selection to top off the delicious Meal. It's a great date night, family, friendly restaurant, and they are able to accommodate large parties even last minute. The food comes out in a timely manner and is impeccably fresh. Ambiance: The entrance to this place is not visible from the street, it's located on the back side of what looks like a business complex. Once inside, it's actually a very nice restaurant with a sushi bar, ample seating, and even some traditional Japanese tables in the very back. The staff all wear traditional Japanese garb and the staff are incredibly friendly and polite. Food: I was split on the food here. The appetizers we got were excellent. The tempura appetizer was fluffy and crispy, served piping hot. It came with a mild tentsuyu dipping sauce as well as a little mound of salt which is a popular way Japanese eat tempura you don't see offered here in the US. We also got the Korean style tofu which was also excellently fried with a tasty mild chili soy sauce. Unfortunately, where the meal fell flat was the sushi. Unlike the high-quality appetizers, the rolls uniformly had thick chewy seaweed you were still chewing after you had swallowed the rice and fish. You can also see the cuts had rough edges and uneven sizes which is just poor craftsmanship. The sushi rice was also under-seasoned and the quality of the rice sub-par with a slightly cardboard-y quality. The quality of the proteins was mixed with the salmon and tamago being the best and the octopus and surf clam being the worst (i.e. extra tough and flavorless). The deluxe sushi & sashimi combo overall wasn't worth it in my opinion, the nigiri was too boring and the quality not high enough to justify it's high cost. I will say the miso soup that came with it was good with generous amounts of tofu and seaweed. Among the specialty rolls, the shuhei namesake roll was too dry and bland but the firecracker roll was delicious with its copious salmon and spicy mayo bringing everything together nicely. If I was going to come back, I'd probably focus on the hot items from the kitchen where they seem to excel. We really enjoyed the service and appetizers but the ingredient quality and craftsmanship really bring the place down. read more

When you pull into the parking lot, you'll wonder if it's correct until you see their branding on an awning. We ordered four totally different rolls and it was more than enough food for two people. We ordered the rainbow roll, maimi heat, spider maki and crab salad futomaki. My absolute favorite was the maimi heat! That one is made with tuna, salmon, tobiko, mango, and hot sauce wrapped in soy paper and flash fried. I'm always a big fan of contrasting textures and flavors in sushi, so I loved the flash fried exterior combined with the super soft interior. The inside is surprisingly huge and runs super busy. Nearly all the tables were crowded! Their dinner menu also includes entrees. I truly didn't spend a ton of time looking at those, because we were on a pretty clear sushi mission. I stopped in on a Saturday morning just after opening. You never know what you're going to get as soon as an establishment has opened for the day. I was pleased to find the staff here prepared and very welcoming. My waitress was in traditional dress and it really added to the experience. Absolute disaster tonight. We have been going to this restaurant for over 30 years and this is the first time I am upset enough to write this kind of a review. An order was placed for a 7pm pick up and when we went to pick it up were told they were working on 5:45 orders and didn't know how long it would be. Multiple people said forget it and walked out without any food. Our order finally came up at 7:45. We have always enjoyed this restaurant, but they should not be accepting carry out orders they are unable to fulfill. They should not leave people standing there with little to no communication. And when we called, the person who answers the phones was extremely rude. I am going to have a very hard time considering Shuhei for carryout any time soon if this is the service they provide under the new management. read more

I've been coming here for over 20 yrs , it was the only place in northeast Ohio to get great sushi. Unfortunately tonight it was not a good experience. Ribs used to be so moist & tender, they would fall off the bone..but tonight they were very dry and tough, we didn't finish them. Also, they must be using a new gyoza, the ones tonight were bland & nothing like before. We love spicy tuna, but it was so hot tonight that it was really burning our mouth. Lastly, they used to serve ice cold beer, but ours were barely chilled. The one highlight was our server, she was very nice.
