Wow, finally an exceptional sushi restaurant in Northeast Ohio. I thought I was just too picky, but rice seems to be the one area where most sushi restaurants in the area fail. The rice that came with the fish was tender, plump and slightly sticky. We started with the pressed rolls and roasted eggplant and I'm still fantasizing about how delicious it was, so I give that one: 5 eggplants We sat at the bar and the chef was friendly and educational. We learned that the restaurant specializes in sustainably sourced, MSC-certified fish and Aquaculture Stewardship Council-certified sushi! Ultimate awesomeness combo rating of: 3 eggplants & 3 peaches From the gunkan ikura, to the chu-toro, all were fresh and artfully plated. The only criticism I hav3 is that without a comprehensive understanding of the size or portions of each item, it was difficult to choose all at once as our server had requested. I really, really wanted to love, or even like, Masu. I would have definitely become a very regular customer if it was nearly as good as the reviews that I read. Unfortunately, it did not meet any of my expectations. A friend and I came on a Wednesday night. We arrived right at our reservation time. We were seated in the middle of the small dining area and then did not even have anyone acknowledge us, or take a drink/appetizer order for over 45 minutes. When we were finally able to flag someone down and were allowed to place an order, it came fairly quickly. However, the drinks, appetizers and our main meals all came at almost the same time. The food was not at all at the level that I would have expected. Other reviews say that the food is good, but unfortunately that was not our experience. read more

We came on opening week - been looking forward to Masu opening for months!! Sure, there were some minor hiccups given the new staff. However, the food, the food, the food...hands-down best sushi in CLE again, Dante! Ambience gives the vibe of a small sushi bar in Tokyo. I actually have been back several times since, mostly for takeout. They have a phenomenal deal for lunch Poké bowl, you have to check it out. It is well worth it - and very affordable. Wow, that was the best sushi experience I've had to date. Owner and head chef Jake McDaniel really knows what he's doing and is doing it at a high level. He was a joy to talk to and even gave us a free piece of barramundi nigiri to try. So buttery and smooth. The fresh fish on display and the aesthetic of the interior really makes you feel like you're at a sushi bar in Japan. I thought it was going to be more expensive. I ordered the house Nomi rolls for $14 which came with 8 pieces. More than fairly priced for what you get. I'm spreading the good word and will definitely be back! read more

We had such high hopes for this restaurant. We (a party of 4) went to celebrate a birthday. The service was terrible. The server only took drink orders for 3 of us and ran off before taking the other drink order. She returned with four drinks, and tried to push an unordered and pricey margarita on us. She then offered to let us try it but we did not want it. She gave it to the table behind us. Of course it ended up on our tab. When we were choosing our food, the server only recommended the most expensive items and pushed us to let her order for the table. When we asked for a few more minutes, she told us that there were many reservations after us. While we were waiting for our food, the server came to our table and asked us if we would like to order more sushi. We had not received any food yet - she had no idea what was going on with us at our table. When we ordered a second round of drinks, she forgot one of our drinks (the birthday girl's). The server kept telling us about her partner's bar in Cleveland Heights. She spent more time talking about that than she did with our food. As for the food, it was just ok. The presentation was lacking, especially for food at this price point. We are no stranger to fine dining, but the food and service do not match the cost. The $2 charge for ice in drinks is a bit silly. Finally, I did send an email to the restaurant to tell them about our awful experience, but I did not get a response. Food is amazing. Fish from Japan a couple of times a week, and fresh eel from Maine, so the sashimi and nigiri are out of this world. If you can splurge the bento boxes of sashimi and nigiri are the best in northeast Ohio. Appetizers and desserts were also great. Service was amazing as well. read more

My friends and I arrived at Masu with great hopes, having enjoyed excellent meals at Dante Bocuzzi's local landmark restaurant Ginko in Tremont. Sadly, it was not to be. The first red flag for the evening was a strong fishy smell as we entered the restaurant. Setting aside our concerns, we were seated promptly by the hostess, and our waiter brought us hot green tea to start the evening. We ordered miso soup, spicy edamame, and Age-Doshi tofu as starters, followed by an assortment of nigiri, sashimi, and maki rolls. The miso soup and edamame never made it out of the kitchen, and the first item we were served was the Masu (sea trout) roll. The fish was stale, but we were so hungry at that point having waited for 30 minutes, we made due with adding a bit of pickled ginger. The waiter returned and I reminded him that we had not received our starters. He offered to comp the miso soup. Next out of the kitchen was the Age-Dashi Dofu, which was quite good though it arrived late. It was fried to a light crisp and served with a delicate yet flavorful sauce. The sashimi and nigiri were disappointing. The Hokkigai (clams) were not fresh, and the fatty tuna was flavorless. The Ebi Tataki (shrimp) was just OK, but again, mostly flavorless. The two Maki rolls we ordered-- spicy tuna and tempura shrimp-- were the best items of the evening. This may be because a host of culinary sins can be covered by tempura or sriracha. In any case, those rolls saved what might have been a total loss of an evening's dining experience. Our waiter, realizing we were disappointed, comped us a serving of mochi for dessert. It was nothing to write home about but I suppose we shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. Our bill for the evening totaled just over $180 before tip for three people. MInd you this is a meal that did not include alcohol. It was not worth the drive from Rocky River- the sushi on the West Side is much fresher. We will not be returning. 2 stars read more

Awful service. We made reservations for the bar initially and the manager was awesome and was able to fit us in at a table instead. We love ginko so we were excited to try this restaurant, the sushi was delicious. As for the service. Our waitress, Andrea V was awful. It took her 10+ minutes to come over initially. She showed us the drink menu and ran before we could say we already knew what we wanted. Then she took another 20 minutes to come back. We ordered drinks and dinner at the same time to avoid any more delay. When we asked to keep the menu ( we normally order a couple rounds of sushi) she was frustrated and said if we ordered again after the initial order it would take 45 min. (This never happens at ginko). She never came back after that. Never came to check the initial apps or the sushi that was delivered. Never checked to see if we were okay or if we wanted more drinks. We flagged down the manager for our check and another server offered to take our check. Unfortunately the waitress ruined our experience. Although the sushi was good, I don't think we will be back we will stick with ginko. read more

I give 0 stars. Worst experience ever!!! Server not knowledgeable about menu items, but very pushy about suggesting expensive menu items. Server poured an additional glass of wine that was not requested. Additional $14 added to bill!! After a long wait time, I received only part of my dinner before my other guests. Half an hour later the other guests still did not receive their dinner and I did not receive the rest of my dinner. We asked server about our order and asked to speak to the manager. The manager never came over. 10 mins. later still no food so we cancelled our order. Still no manager came to table. This was a special eventing for us and after being there for an hour we left without ever having dinner. Shame on the manager for never approaching our table or addressing the lack of service. In addition...as we were putting on our coats, a staff person attempted to finally serve us. They had no knowledge we were upset and were leaving due to waiting an hour for dinner. We will never recommend MASU and will never be back. read more
