Staff is very nice and professional. The clinic is clean and very kid-friendly. They have an outdoor playground for kids to play while they wait. My daughter has hip dysplasia and they were able to get us in right away and begin her treatment plan. Today I was referred to Shriners orthopedic and called to set up an appointment which they mentioned they take walk-ins until 4pm which was good to hear. The gentleman took all my sons information and when I arrived they greeted me friendly and the check in process was also quick which was great.The facility is amazing and it's a kid friendly place. Our daughter had a procedure done at the Pasadena office. It was a stressful time of uncertainty, but the staff handled us with such care and grace. While she was in surgery, a doctor came to the waiting room and handed out warm cookies. He noticed that my husband was curled up (the waiting room was a little cold), went back, and brought us some warmed blankets. We were so touched by his thoughtfulness and he pointed out that they want to make sure to take care of the parents too. read more

Great hospital and attentive, in person. On the phone, it's a different story. Person who answered was holding a conversation in the background. I had to repeat myself over and over again with two different individuals in the clinic. I'd state the answer, they'd repeat it back - multiple times. Wish I could give 0 stars worst hospital I have ever been that you have to drive through the middle of LA. To get to it. appointments are given on the peak hour traffic and they have no consideration with people that drives over an hour away and we have no control over traffic or accidents. We have been to CHLA so many times and they understand that there times were is traffic and they're understanding that people don't have control over it on the freeway and they're willing to make anything possible to accommodate telling you to wait until the end of the appointments wich we gladly have done and appreciate the understanding and the help and care for the patients. At this hospital we literally were four minutes after the grace period time and they were refused to even try to accommodate at all I refuse to even give a note for my son's so now he has an School absence for no reason, even though we have no control of traffic and four minutes, it's too much for them . it's a small hospital, which apparently they don't have enough staff if they cannot accommodate someone four minutes after. well we definitely not coming back in here. There is so many other better hospitals like the orthopedic institute for Childrens in Adams blv which they always have the space and accommodate for urgent care from 9 AM to 5 PM. Without appointment and they give you a follow up appointments after that with the regular orthopedic surgeons if needed. only reason came to Shriners hospital. It's because my insurance for some reason sent us here but definitely calling tomorrow first thing in the morning to switch. read more

A very bad experience with this organization over a charitable donation of all things. They got super aggressive with us and sent threatening letters. I was shocked at their behavior. In the end, they were proven wrong, did not apologize, and will never receive another dime from our estate. Their loss - big time! Give to St. JUDES - a much better donation. read more

Our poor two-year-old son dislocated his elbow a couple weeks ago when his nanny picked him up by the arms. One minute, he was okay, and the next, he was holding his left arm and crying. I was at the vet, dealing with the dogs, and Matt B. was at work when our nanny called, both she and little Leo B. in obvious distress. I reached out to my cousin, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, and my friend, a plastic surgeon, both parents of young children, and got an immediate probable diagnosis of nursemaid's elbow, a common, easily treatable injury. My plastic surgeon friend works at Shriners Children's in Pasadena, and while Matt and I scrambled to get home to our distressed toddler, she registered us for an immediate appointment, saving us a long, stressful wait at an urgent care. There's obviously a friends and family component to this particular service, but I do gather that Shriners is a stellar hospital that cares for a lot of patients in acute need of pediatric care. We checked in with a staff member who owed us absolutely nothing, and she was super nice and made all the paperwork/insurance stuff easy while Leo commented on what she was doing and wearing ("She's working? She has black shoes?"). We were then taken in for X-rays and an appointment with physician assistant Julia Groh. Leo hated the X-rays, but the tech was lovely and made things as easy as possible. PA Groh ruled out fractures then reset Leo's elbow gently and quickly. She was so good with him, I felt immensely grateful even as my child sat there, crying. The experience was, of course, terrible, but the folks at Shriners made it tolerable and relatively low-stress. Leo's arm bothered him for another day, during which he kept it immobile, but on the morning of day three, he woke up moving around and smiling like nothing had happened. He just has a brand new toy truck to remember the hospital visit, a sweet take-home gift to distract him in the exam room. We'll have to be careful not to reinjure that elbow, but otherwise, the whole episode feels over and done with, thanks to our friends at Shriners. read more

Yesterday I called to see if my son could be seen due to a possible infection he got surgery here about a month ago. The lady who first answered the phone was I believe having another conversation on the other end of the phone I could hear he giggling while trying to assist me she was very unprofessional. She stated I need to go to urgent care but my son received care there. They stated dr wasn't in the rest of the week and didn't have any appointments available 2 weeks out? I understand maybe it's true but if you're in this industry you have to be a little more sensitive towards your patients. So I was a patient at Shriners when they were in LA. It was great and was the best experience. I now have a daughter and she has OI type 1 like me. I decided to take her to Shriners since my experience was so positive. Unfortunately, it's not like I remembered. 1) They are now ONLY a medical office not a hospital so if your child breaks a femur you go HAVE to take them elsewhere. When I was a patient I was hospitalized and treated there. 2) they didn't know how to put an iv in and poked every limb and had multiple nurse hold my 1year old down. Sometimes they had to skip treatments cuz they couldn't get an IV in or it blew. Due to that experience my daughter became very fearful and traumatized. They tried to say it was stranger anxiety but it wasn't. It was an awful experience. Ever since they moved, the care downgraded. I knew I had to try to give my child a better experience so I switched to CHLA and let me tell you the vibe and they way they are able to comfort my toddler is amazing. My little one use to just cry when a nurse or doctor came into the door and I mean they couldn't even make eye contact cuz she associated healthcare workers with pain. But at CHLA OMG they are able to get an IV in with one poke and my little girl hasn't missed a treatment. When she breaks a leg she is hospitalized and cared for with no issues. She actually dances with the nurses and runs to them to play. She is happier and thriving at CHLA. I wished shiners was still the hospital I remembered but unfortunately it's not. read more

Nurses and everyone that worked at Shriners are excellent. I am giving Shriners 3 stars because of the billing department (a 3rd) party that they are contracted with is TERRIBLE! I have tried calling for months to obtain our billing history, and not only they kept dropping the ball but the reps at that department are rude and today, a rep, Alicia, dared to call my son's name "WEIRD!" And these were her exact words "oh I remembered speaking with you on feb 7 because your son has a WEIRD name" and she laughed. I told her " no, his name is NOT weird, it is unique." Took my son there for two appointments (a broken wrist). The staff was very friendly and professional.

I am very angry and disappointed with this place. My son was referred here to see an orthopedic Surgeon for his neck and shoulder pain. After seeing the doctor, he suggested physical therapy and after a few sessions we stopped because it didn't help him. He did not give any kind of diagnosis nor did he recommend anything to help my son. From day one he pushed us into doing the cortisone shot. I kept telling him that doesn't fix his problem, it's just a temporary pain reliever but he kept asking us to try on every visit. Really? His words on our last visit were " Well, I'm sorry I wasn't able to help but let me at least give you the shot." I will never go back here again. I had very high hopes from this place but very disappointed and time wasted. read more

All I can say is thank God for the Shriners. They are the BEST! We had better care, doctors and caring staff here than from those where we were billed. My son was a patient here from the time he was 4 until he was 19 years old. The care was top notch, and, as a parent, I was also well taken care of, especially during those times when I was obliged to spend some time there, sometimes up to two weeks. We couldn't have been happier or more blessed to have had this hospital, its staff, especially Drs. Kay and Setoguchi, and the Shriners who run and support it in our lives. I just want to say that this review pertains to an incident that happened December of 2015 and I cannot find the doctors name on their website. I'm not sure if she is still there, but I did want to share my experience. I had the most horrific experience. NOTHING HAVING TO DO WITH THE NURSES, MEDICAL ASSISTANTS, RECEPTIONIST, ETC. My unfortunate experience was with the doctor. She advised AGAINST my son having surgery and was VERY VERY RUDE. Only to get a second opinion from an incredible orthopedic pediatric surgeon at UCLA. I took my son for clubfoot treatment and Dr. Nguyen made my son's foot complex (meaning it wasn't corrected the right way). They do not follow the ponseti method the way it should be (plaster casts only, not with soft rolls). His last cast after the tenotomy was too turned over. Another red flag is that the doctor said the last cast would slip because my baby is growing. There should not be any slipping of casts whatsoever! I left Shriners and went to see Dr. Rodriguez in Mission Viejo. She trained with Dr. Ponseti himself and follows treatment to the tee. Stay away from Shriners for clubfoot!! read more

This is a nonprofit hospital that does great things for children. They specialize in spine cases and plastics. It is a relatively small hospital, but is gated and very clean. The staff is very nice, and there are a lot of amenities for the kids (video games, toys, arts and crafts). They also have a lot of events or celebrities who come through to read to the kids. Miracle workers. An organization that makes you feel GOOD about being a human being because if a hospital like this is possible, then there's really nothing we can't do if we put our heads together, is there? My connection with Shriners is a deeply personal one as this was the hospital that was able to undo years of damage on my little brother's elbow that happened after multiple unfortunate breaks and barbaric surgery procedures done by incompetent doctors in the 80s. His right elbow was set incorrectly and, as a result, his arm was growing shorter and completely crooked, to the point that it was difficult for him to bend and, since it's his dominant arm, this was a big problem. He also had metal spikes inside his arm which had to be removed from the flesh that had grown around them and this was altogether a very complex procedure that required best experts and best post-op care since the recovery period was incredibly long. I believe we got referred to Shriners by members of our church in the early nineties and after the assessment of the damage, the doctors advised my parents not to allow anything to be done on the arm until after my brother would go through his teenage growth spurt. They monitored the situation with my family and when it was GO TIME, we were all eased through this very difficult period. During the recovery, I remember meeting other patients from all around the world who were taken in by Shriners and as heartbreaking as it was to learn of their stories and maladies, there was a great and uplifting spirit that the staff took time to nurture. In particular, I remember that they had a radio station at the hospital that the kids were allowed to take over and participate in as one of their activities. I think that was one of my brother's favorites and we even have a picture of him sitting at all the audio equipment, bandaged up but very happy. Again, there are not enough words in the world to describe the deep gratitude I feel for Shriners. If you are researching this place because it may be a part of your or your loved ones' healing journey, then please take my wholehearted words of love for this hospital into consideration. In summary, it's a place you hate to have to need but LOVE to have it be there. read more
