It's has a serene aura with an idyllic setting facing a courtyard whose backdrop is against beautiful nature... trees, a stream, and historic buildings that feel like beautifully renovated farm buildings. I retired 2 years ago. In searching for new adventures, I have located a wonderful space, people and yoga practice at Shree. I have never tried yoga and am new to it. I always wanted to start yoga but was a little intimated since I thought of the back bends and advanced moves. Anyway, I signed up and was so happy that I did! Allison was our instructor and she was very friendly, had a great personality, knowledgeable, a good communicator, kind and a great sense of humor. I am OLD! But being older is not bad when you have practiced yoga for a while. The advantages of yoga in aging are multifold and known to most. The advantages of Shree Yoga in Saddle River are only known to those who take classes there. This is a wonderful studio, in a wonderful location. An intimate studio located in Barnstable Court next to the Saddle River Inn, Shree Yoga captures the essence of the yoga experience. Small classes with passionate instructors (Andrea comes to mind) who pays attention and offers guidance to each individual student. Great schedule of classes for novices (like me) and regulars alike. Only caveat is that the studio is SMALL, enough for maybe 10-12 students, so popular classes can get crowded quickly. I've taken a handful of classes here, including pilates and yoga. For pilates, the instructor made sure that I was holding the postures properly without coming across as condescending or negative. For yoga, I found it especially awesome since the instructor had the class collaborate and create the flow for the class with some gentle alterations if the suggested asanas wouldn't work in sequence. The only thing that would keep me from being a regular is that I live sort of far from the studio. The space itself is gorgeous, an old barn stable overlooking some of the Saddle River. I'm a sucker for anything overlooking water, so between the great instructor that I had, gorgeous space and water element, I'm 100% sold. read more

SHREE is a wonderful studio and all of the instructors are excellent. I have been going to classes at SHREE for many years and all of the teachers are excellent and have something different to offer their students. Last January I made a yoga commitment and started taking two to three classes a week at SHREE and enjoy the variety of teaching styles. One of the teachers Kent was a professional dancer for years before becoming a yoga teacher ten years ago and brings an incredible amount of knowledge of the body and grace to his classes. Kent encourages his students to do just a little more than they are used to doing and watches over you while you try. Chaya has organized a book club for the students, all types of special programs and this summer a number of us will be going to Ireland for a retreat. read more

Went back for my 3rd class here yesterday. Really wishing they were closer to me because I am almost 40 minutes away and have a membership in my town. But I am still glad I found this gem. The restorative class with Karon at 10:30 on Tuesdays is such a winner. I have 3 more classes on my groupon but I am so in love with the practice of yoga I have decided to take Shree's Immersion Program in the Fall (there is an intro on 7/18 and a discount if you put a down payment by 8/1) and work my way up to teacher training while I am in school. I feel I have been led to Shree and am happy to go where it will take me! read more

This has been my first experience with yoga, and I was very unsure. It was suggested that I delve into restorative yoga. Chaya was incredibly helpful and took the time to talk to me and answer all of my questions. I was a little apprehensive before the first class I attended, but proved to be totally unfounded. I have practiced yoga for many years, But due to some low back problems, now I am unable to move with a lot of low back discomfort. Always looking for some help to heal, I was excited to see a "Create a Healthy Back" on the Shree schedule on Wednesdays at 4pm. I went to Terry's class full of hope that I would be able to practice and not be so uncomfortable that I would have to stop. Not only were all my hopes met, they were exceeded. Terry is a wonderful teacher, with compassion, knowledge, and an obvious desire to help his students. His class moved at a slow pace, really working into the back as he explained what we were working on and more importantly, why. With a great mix of humor and seriousness, he showed us how to be mindful of our backs. After class, I thought, "I feel so more open and I am so happy I can move with ease" which is exactly what I hoped for. But better than that, the next morning, I woke up feeling my back was not quite as stiff and I knew that Terry has made a difference in my recovery. I know I will be returning to class. I would encourage anyone struggling with back issues to come. It will make a difference in your mobility and attitude. read more

Amazing studio!!!!!!!!! The classes are big (about 20 people) so make sure you book on time, also get there early so you get a good spot. The location is just perfect, in front of a small lake with a big tree right in front. The front of the studio is all glass so you see this beautiful and serene scenery outside. Definitely the best studio location I have been to. The class starts with a story told by the instructor, and a small prayer in Sanskrit. This sets the mood for the entire class. The classes I went to were beginner, but they integrated many different poses. The pace of the class is relaxed, not too energetic, it was more relaxing than a huge workout. I think it overall, balanced it all very well. I would recommend this place to anyone in the area. Unfortunately for me the place was a bit out of the way. It was a good 40 minute drive, which I did for a few weeks but I was unable to continue afterwards. Give it a try, you will not regret it. read more

I have been to numerous yoga studios for trial periods and Groupon deals. I have never felt as comfortable and as welcome as I do at Shree. I have never decided that someplace was "my place" before. I have never invested and purchased a large block of classes so confidently before. My daughter is a seasoned ashtanga instructor in Vermont, where the pace of life is far removed from the hectic and stressful life of the tri-state New York metro area. Shree Yoga is like bringing that peaceful, calm Vermont studio here. The instructors are kind, nurturing and concerned. The classes are meant for a whole life awareness and health, whole body and mind. It's not hot yoga or "fad" yoga, or yoga for your abs per se, but whole body mind yoga where you leave feeling able to face the day. The studio itself is an anomaly, tucked away in a small corner of Northern Bergen County, overlooking the Saddle River. The single room is painted like my daughters old Waldorf School classroom, in light dreamy sunset colors with lotus blooming in the corners. Just coming to the location for every class, is removing you from the everyday fray. If you are looking to improve your life, to get more out of life or to simply get calm, focused and feeling good, this is the place. read more

I don't know what to say; really. The only reason the place isn't cramped is because it's in a beautiful spot but hums with a feeling of stay away! I was delighted the first time I tried the studio because I thought I was going to get a semi private lesson; there were only a few of us. I paid for a "DROP IN" fee of 20 dollars which seemed reasonable. The problem is that they spend a lot of the time in class preaching to you, never letting you relax and concentrate into a pose. Rather they get you into a pose and then start pontificating about your knee needing to be like the river and not moving towards the shore rather it should respect the boundaries. I mean, speak English, I'm here to relax not to translate. I honestly tried the studio a few times and it seemed that a guy named Kent was very good and some guy who substituted was also very good but I can't remember his name was good. There was a lady name Val who pontificated about politics and her hip....Please; I worked all day and payed to be here. Overall the teachers need to teach yoga and keep their personal political, and religious philosophies to them selves. . read more
