The only thing that was good to me was the sides fries and coleslaw . The ribs was on the dry side. The waiter was really good

My husband had to go for some tests at Baptist Hospital down the road. So, while waiting, I came across this "oasis". I say it is an oasis for me because it was the first real food that I have had since being quarantined during the Covid-19 pandemic. I went twice. The first time I had the chicken and rib combo platter and the second time I had the rib lunch combo. Both were delicious! Since we were still under Covid-19 isolation rules, I couldn't sit inside and have a nice quiet lunch in the dining area. However, I was grateful that they were open and I was able to do take-out. I remember this place from when my kids were young about 30 years ago. We stopped here for dinner when we took them to the Ringley Barnum Circus when it was in Miami. Interesting...I remember the ribs but don't remember specifics about the circus. The place has been in business in the same location for 65 years! That alone should attest to the quality of the establishment. Way to go! Thanks for still being around for me during a trying time. read more

Awesome Que! I had a grilled chicky breast w bacon & cheese. She had brisket & ribs & mac&cheese & all else!! Lol! Shared a carrot cake for dessert. Moist. Yummy. Myummy? Lol. The floor was sooo slick, but that's it. Really consistent. Hooray!! read more

I'm only giving it a two stars because the wings were good and after about 15 minutes of waiting we had a very nice waitress. The food was so dry both the smoked chicken and ribs. The pork steak was a fat steak. Just terrible no flavor what so ever I actually had to drink to swallow the chicken. read more

The barbecue ribs was amazing and so was the corn on the cob. I will definitely repeat.

Everything was great as usual corn babybacks, slaw, & chicken.Missing the pitcher but grandson wasn't 21

Shorty's is one of those places that has been consistently good and been around longer than I can remember. We have visited this place on numerous occasions and really surprised I haven't written a review on it yet. I'd like to start by saying that restaurants decor weather inside or out makes you feel like if your in a huge log caben with a BBQ pit. The delicious smell of bbq is all over and gives no doubt about feast you are about to have. Thera are plent that classify themselves as BBQ meat online, but when you show and find that all the have is a dish or two like spare ribs and often walk away dissapointt, but let me tell you that Sonny's BBQ is the real deal. They have all kinds of southern food like friend green tomatoes, fried okra, buttered corn on the Cobb and other delicious choices. My favorite is the brisket in there special sauce, but the chicken and ribs are very good as well. They also sell beer and tonight out waitress Gaby offered us to try tJR YUENGLING draft beer and thinking that Gaby was maybe struggling with a latin accent trying to say "New England' beer just smiled and asked her to bring me a pitcher. I was surprised when she returned with pitcher explaining that name was correct and one of the oldest beers in the country and gotta day it was served COLD and was very good. We didn't take as many pictures of food presentation because we were starving by the time it arrived, but it will happen on next visit! Service was excelente and could be happier about our experience and kudos to people like Gaby that enjoy what their going and although place was packed took the time send time with us helping with order or just being super friendly. Definitely 5 star and look forward to returning soon. read more

Food was excellent, they had piled so much that I had to take some home. And of course the cornbread. The best in town! Edna, our waitress is the best. Definitely a hard worker but friendly and amusing. And what can you say about the ambiance. That's what makes the experience all worthwhile. I highly recommend this place. And the price is reasonable. read more

This is the place of my childhood memories! It's been here since at least the mid 70's. Hadn't been here in a while. But it's the 4th of July and I'm not cooking so here I landed. The pulled pork platter is more than enough for two to share (or take home for a second meal). The fried green tomatoes were good but not the best I've had. The corn on the cob, swimming in a pool of butter, never disappoints! All in all it's must stop for bbq for the Miami native or the wanna be. read more

Probably one of the best BBQ spots in southwest Miami Dade. Definitely better than Shivers and Sonnys. I had the brisket platter and I was instantly wowed by the tenderness of the brisket. Very soft and the meat that melts in your mouth. Even the cole slaw was delicious which was vinegar based not very mayonnaisee. The barbecue sauces added amazing flavor to the brisket as well. Very very good barbeque. read more

Sad. Everything sucked. The waitress looked like she was dead inside. She forgot our order completely within the time she got our waters. Reminded her and the food still came out wrong. Forgot the shorty sauce. Everything came cold. Chicken was dry, fries were limp and oily, and took forever despite it being empty. I cannot emphasize how dead the atmosphere was. You would think everyone came from a funeral after getting dumped. I'm somber even remembering the hour I spent there. Never going back. Shorty's has been a staple forever at this location, but all good things must come to an end... read more

I don't know what has happened to this place, for the longest time it was a must for local BBQ. The chicken reigned supreme here, now it's just overcooked dry cardboard, it's a good thing they give you two styles of bbq sauce to soak moisture back into the bird. This chicken plater is accompanied by crinkle cut fries and a delicious cole slaw, as pictured here. I hope that this write up and other complaints will bring them back in the game because I grew up coming here and it's been a family tradition. read more

Growing up in Miami, I've come to this local institution since the 1970's. It will always have a "soft spot" in my heart as the BBQ I grew up on. May not be the best barbeque in the world, but to me it will always be my favorite. Came here with my family (from Ohio) as a stop on our way down to a vacation in the Keys. I love the fact that it still looks (and smells) just like it did all those years ago. Communal bench seating makes for a lively atmosphere inside, and I ordered my usual...corn-on-the-cob and a spare rib plate. Once again, everything was as i remembered including the "moat" of butter surrounding my corn cob and the two BBQ sauces I combine on my ribs (tableside squeeze bottle sauce and the warm "drippings" sauce in the glass shaker jar). Their crinkle-cut fries always hit the spot and the cole slaw is super-creamy. Left with a t-shirt so I can daydream about those finger lickin' ribs every time I wear it. Thanks for the memories, Shorty's!!! read more

This place is not too good. Each platter comes with french fries and cole slaw. The bbq pulled pork tastes like crock pot pulled pork versus your traditional on the grill or smoker pulled pork. The ribs were ok you'll definitely need bbq sauce for added flavor. The bbq beans were a tiny portion for the price vs the mac and cheese which was a huge portion and you could tell it's manufactured mac and cheese and not "home made" baked potato looked awful on the inside. Then you also have workers and managers eating near where the servers would pick up your food. read more

Nasty mess of fatty grisly brisket just cost me 25 dollars. I asked for a baked potato but checked my order before I left with it and found French fries. I shouldn't have to find that out as a surprise. No, they are out of baked potatoes. All in all, the meal was an unpleasant and expensive disappointment. Yeah, and I tipped 15% for counter service. Definitely a five star BBQ Joint. I had to hold myself back since i had a long drive ahead of me. Did not want to get the -itis on the road. Gabi the waitress is absolutely a adorable and so very kind. Alan and I had the wood smoked chicken and the beef brisket which was incredibly tender and you have your choice of barbecue sauces but I ate my chicken plain because it was so well Smoked and seasoned. There's hespecial sauce for the brisket which is also good but I mixeb the sweet barbecue sauce with the brisket sauce and that made it even more delicious. I'll definitely be back. read more

Meat is dry, service is terrible. Sauce is not good. Overall a waste of money. The only reason that they got 2 stars is because of the garlic bread- which is not the thing that a BBQ place should say is the best item on their menu. read more

Yes, I do love these places. Shorty's was basically my go-to place when I lived near Kendall just because of the nearness of it, meaning that it's main pull was the convenience. That said, just because I wouldn't rate it as "the best" doesn't mean in any way it isn't a very good place to eat, because I wouldn't have kept going if it wasn't. I've always enjoyed the food there, though quality is not consistent (meaning that sometimes the ribs are great and the brisket is just fine, sometimes the brisket is superb, but the pulled pork is a bit dry... but in general, its never not good. Now, if you want something the never ever get wrong, it's the coleslaw and the corn on the cob. This may sound weir coming from a meat-loving guy about a bbq restaurant, but yes, the meats are good AND whenever they get something below expectations then the sides kind of make it right. Now, the last time I went was around March. My aunt from the UK was visiting and I took her out to try some American-style BBQ. the first thing to note is that the server, Albert, I think, was fast, efficient, polite and good on every single part of his job. This was good as, every once in a while, that's precisely one of Shorty's shortcomings (pun not intended, but enjoyed): the service sometimes is rude and/or slow. But this time we had just the perfect server to bring someone from out of town and have the enjoy the experience and leave happy (and my aunt left VERY happy). I got the Brisket Platter, my aunt had the chicken and ribs combo. Both were on point. Well, the brisket was not as hot as it should, but whatever, if they bring it hot it cools down while you eat the fries anyway. By the way: the fries were good, not great, and I have the feeling these may be the ones that come frozen in a bag and not made there and then, but they were alright. The garlic bread is always good, this time was no exception; and I tried my aunt's baked potato and it was pretty good too, though she didn't order it loaded. As I previously noted, the coleslaw here is always great (though I do add a bit of the house bbq sauce to spice it up :) Shoty's decor is very much the standard for these bbq places, with stuff hanging all over the walls (licence plates, road signs, etc.) but it doesn't feel as cluttered as other places and it does give it some extra... ambiance... As usual, once you're finished, Albert brings the check "whenever you want, no hurry" and you go and stand in line for the cashier, and pay. Which happened without a glitch. Overall, you could do worse than going to Shorty's for a good meal. read more

We were in Miami to see a Marlins game and board a cruise the next day. After knocking around town for a few hours, we were lured in this place by the delicious smells. This place features family style seating, meaning that long tables are in the middle, and then the outer edge is ringed with tables where diners sit side-by-side and look out the window as they eat. Kinda weird to be sat with strangers like this, but ok. We both ordered the slider plate, which was three BBQ sandwiches (pulled pork, brisket, and smoked beef for me) and fries with small cups of coleslaw. We also ordered an appetizer of onion rings. The onion rings came out fairly quickly, but it felt like we waited forever for our food. While the sliders feature a sizeable portion of meat, the pulled pork tasted like the refrigerated stuff you buy at the store and reheat. The brisket was flavored well, but so dry. Same with the smoked beef. The only thing we really liked here was the cornmeal-coated onion rings. Some of the slices were way too thick, but the crunch was so good and they were absolutely delicious. Despite how we felt about the food, the (WAY too small) parking lot was always full, and people just kept coming in. Maybe they're normally better than what we experienced, I don't know. I'd hope so, as long as this place has been open, but they didn't make a good impression on us. Two meals in one day in Miami, and both were a disappointment. read more

Shorty's is a Miami institution which I surely appreciate. While I was a student at UM, I had it catered on a few occasions and have since gone to the brick and mortar two times for a meal. Most recently, I ventured here for lunch with friends and the overall experience was kind of meh. It was packed on a Sunday but the staff was quick to get everyone seated. Overall, the staff here is super friendly. Our waiter split checks easily but was often slow to check in and our food took awhile to come out. I ordered the brisket platter which comes with fries, coleslaw and a piece of garlic bread. The brisket was super dry and needed a lot of sauce to taste good. Speaking of sauce, they have three different types of BBQ sauce. My favorite was the regular one served on the table. The fries were undercooked and I'm not a huge fan of the coleslaw either. It'd be nice if they let you swap the coleslaw for beans or another small side, but they let me know that wasn't possible and I'd have to order/pay for more sides instead. My husband enjoyed his ribs and I will say they weren't as dry as the brisket, so maybe that's the way to go. He's also a big fan of the corn on the cob which comes in a pool of butter. We don't have a lot of solid BBQ choices in Miami and I appreciate this no frills atmosphere. That being said, I can't wholeheartedly sing the praises of the actual food that hits the table. read more

Shorty's is one of those Miami institutions, that I'd take the Metrorail to (it's just off the Dadeland South station) before I could drive (and pre-yelp). Is it fancy, with jazzy music and purposefully mismatched post-industrial chairs? Nope! Therein lies it's charm. It's a spot you go to for old-fashioned BBQ, before cuisine became modernized. Seating is old school picnic-type tables, or benches. You can taste the smokiness in the meat, and you can see the pieces of wood outside. Besides ketchup, they have sweet BBQ sauce as well as their trademark hot smoked one. Start off like I did, and order their corn on the cob. This is nice size piece of maize, soaked in sweet liquid margarine. (Calories don't count on the weekend!) I always skip the cole slaw (bad memories from Elementary school cafeteria) and go either with extra crinkled fries or sweet cup of baked beans. This particular Saturday I enjoyed a 1/2 chicken complete with skin and plenty of tender, smokey meat. The fries could have been a little crispier, but no biggie. I'll keep coming back to Shorty's. read more

I went today after work and order the chicken and ribs platter and it was terrible the chicken was dry and the ribs were tough and very little meat. Being a rustic looking, somewhat divey sort of place, Shorty's is an appearance standout in that it just doesn't seem to fit in with the surrounding structures or businesses, but as evidenced by its overwhelming popularity amongst its hoards of loyal barbecue hungry diners, obviously a culinary fit. Inside, the place looks like a barbecue joint should look with long rows of out dated dark wooden chairs and tables topped with little more rolls of paper towels for napkins, ketchup and couple squeeze bottles of sauce. It's anything but up to date, glamorous or glitzy; more like you might find in rural Texas as opposed to what one might expect amidst the typical restaurant over dazzle of Miami. When I stepped in, I was immediately met by a greeter who grabbed several menus. seating myself and my companion at a dark, old and obviously heavily used table. Within a few moments our waitress appeared who was both friendly and polite. I went for a glass of beer, the 1/2 rack of baby back ribs, with which my waitress gave me the delightful surprise were on special, reduced in price from $14.99 to $7.29, and coleslaw, while my friend and dining companion, Yelper Jim D., opted for the white meat chicken. Within mere moments our orders arrived. I usually attempt to differentiate as to the style of the Q, whether Texas, Memphis, Kansas, St. Louis or whatever, but in this case I was honestly unable to make any definitive determination. I can only say that to me it appeared closest to a rural Texas Central "meat market" dry rub. Accordingly the ribs were served unsauced, with a chew off the bone sturdy but cooked tender in texture without a heavy smoke permutation of flavor going through the meat. My setting came with a flimsy plastic knife and fork; totally useless, so I ended up breaking up and devouring my meal bare handed, ala Henry VIII or Neanderthal style. Though I missed the rich smoke flavor, being something I normally expect, my ribs were delicious and Yelper Jim found his chicken to also be more than satisfactory. My only complaint would be with those damn flimsy worthless plastic forks and knives, but in an odd way, having to do a barehanded tear down of my ribs sort of added to and made my dining experience an all the more memorable down to earth barbecue experience, but thank goodness for that table top roll of paper towels. read more

This is a BBQ institution in South Florida and I've been coming here for over 40 years. And the best part is that some things haven't changed including their recipes for the beans, cole slaw, corn, chicken and ribs. Seating is a little different since the pandemic but normally everyone sits a long picnic tables so you're sharing a table with strangers if it's crowded. But since the pandemic, everyone is spaced out and they have a tent for outside seating. Either way, the food is consistent and if you like a smokey, warm BBQ sauce, you will love theirs. read more

Came to Shorty's a couple of days ago with the family. My son and nephews were really happy with their kids selection. My son had the ribs which he absolutely loves and nephews had the chicken tenders which they were satisfied with. I had the chicken and rib combo about$12.49 which came with and a Ickes leg and thigh and 3 ribs, cole slaw and a slice of garlic bread. I substituted the fries for a sweet potato baked potato which was a great choice, I think! Mom and step dad got ribs which they loved and also we all tried the corn on the cob and I'm so glad we did because it was sooo delicious! Oh my southern goodness! I loved it .. very southern style eating. We ordered chicken and wing combos .. I felt like we were having an indoor picnic. Based on fellow yelpers - thank you had their buttery corn on the cob that was so friggen hot took us forever to be able to eat it - was driving me nuts lol the flavor was awesome. The ribs fell off the bone and portions to me were huge - my hubby and I both took boxes home. The chicken was perfectly cooked and theirs sauces were incredible. It was the best indoor rib fest we have attended. Our server was definitely on the ball and did a great job. The only critical thing I can say is the manager didn't communicate with his staff very well and corrected the host in front of us which was inappropriate. Will go back read more

Great place for some good BBQ at a reasonable price. I hadn't come to this location in months, maybe even years. With that in mind, I was familiar with the menu and flavor of their items. My wife and I decided to go with a combination platter. It's a great option if your in the mood for more than 1 thing, such as ribs and chicken, brisket and ribs, etc. Service was good, very quick and attentive. Now considering we went during the week, it was easier to find a table and order fairly quickly. This place gets pretty busy on the weekend. The food was good, they haven't skipped a beat as far as flavor and condiments. A must try is the corn on the cob and BBQ beans, brisket and ribs combo. No as far as cleanliness, the place definitely needs some spring cleaning, hence the reason why I gave it a 3. Food and service were great, but it isn't appealing to have a meal and see window veils loaded with dirt and flies from weeks ago. With that said, makes it a little skeptical as to the cleanliness of the kitchen, so be warned. read more

Just your average bbq spot. Nothing really stands out. My bf ordered the baby back ribs which he said were too overcooked and crispy and he likes slightly overcooked ribs. My spare ribs were tasty though and I enjoyed the bbq sauce. You can tell they have a nice amount of regulars and I like to see that connection between the servers and customers. Speaking of, the service was pleasant. Adequate parking too. Again, just nothing really standout about the food.
