We've both had negative experiences from our Toyota dealership & were strongly recommended Shortstop from a friend when I had a tire issue on my way to the ferry. What a find. It was late in the day, near closing, and I had a flat that needed fixing, fast. These guys were up to the job, fast, efficient, clean, and reasonably priced. They got me right back on the road in less than 20 minutes. I was so happy to have a great experience during my visit to Canada. I am 70 and have interfaced with many repair shops over the years. We were vacationing on the island from Alberta when our back brake stated to screech the day before leaving for the mainland. Visiting friends in Tsawwassen to overnight. Called friends to contact a shop for us when we arrived the next day . Shortstop was contacted , told of our dilemma., got an appointment with them the same afternoon as the ferry arrived. So here is what I originally posted: We took our car to this auto service and here is our experience: My husband knows the owner of the building, so we thought we get at least a decent service when his car didn't start after work. We made arrangements and the car was towed there. We were told that fuel pump needed replacement and they gave us a quote. It wasn't cheap, but since our car was already there, we agreed for them to do the job. Unfortunately after we picked up the car, the car ENGINE LIGHT came on and we could smell the strong gas smell in the car each time we filled up with gas for few days. Then the smell slowly disappeared and came back when we filled up again. So my husband decided to take the car back (friendly request #2 to correct their mistake). They told him there is nothing wrong with the car and nobody from the crew could smell the gas at all. But the car engine didn't go away and smell was getting stronger, so we took the car back again (friendly request #2 to correct their mistake). After couple of hours of diagnostics, we were told there IS an issue and it will cost us additional $500 extra for them to fix it. On top of that they even charged us the diagnostics fee, so they could find out what they did wrong (REALLY??!?!?!?!). We thought that wasn't fair, so my husband took the car back AGAIN (friendly request #3 to correct their mistake) and he insisted they fix the problem free of charge, but they refused. So he at least demanded our diagnostic fee back. They weren't happy to do it, but they refunded the diagnostic fee in the end. We had to take the car to a different service to fix the problem. It turned out to be a gas leak from an incorrectly installed seal on the gas pump and they did it free of charge as it was a SAFETY ISSUE. So save yourself some serious headache and go somewhere else. Nobody deserves to be treated like those service guys treated us. read more

I've had a great experience with Shortstop! My son's older BMW's exhaust system was no longer available. Jay, to the rescue... He clearly explained options for having this fixed, and then proceeded to weld up a system that works fine, at one third the cost! (A happy son...) I've also had them put in front wheel bearings... I went to Shortstop because my truck had a total brake failure. They did the work and I drove home (an eight hour drive over mountain roads). Four days later the brakes completely stopped working again! They had replaced the part that ruptured on one side of the vehicle but not the same part on the other side that was equally aged and corroded. My wife almost died on her way to work. read more

I had a slow leaking tire and stopped at Shortstop Auto Service in Tsawwassen on my way home. It was mid-afternoon and all their service bays were occupied. They were busy and I assumed I would have to leave my car and pick it up later, but to my surprise, the manager said he could repair the tire right away and asked for my keys. He parked my car in the parking area outside the service bays and instructed a coworker to remove the wheel and repair the tire. I was back on my way in less than 1/2 hr. - without my car even being driven inside! Amazing service and price was reasonable. I'll definitely return when I need additional work. read more

We have always had great experiences with this shop. Will continue to use them. I saw the bad reviews below and had to add my 2cents.

I don't generally post negative things because life is just too short. But after my experience with these guys, I thought it would be prudent to let everyone know what an AWFUL place this is. Short version - I needed my battery replaced and was on my way home from the ferry. Picked this Big O Tire/Shortstop place in Tsawwassen as it was a "reputable" name I knew (though had never done business with), and it was a seemingly simple job. The salesperson Ken was fine, and although it took longer than promised, they did all sorts of tests on it to make sure it was a battery issue, then did the replacement. The job was done, I paid the bill and left. But after leaving the lot and no further than 2 blocks away, I noticed that between me dropping the car off and picking it up, the garage had somehow blown the fuel gage needle right around. I was gone no more than 1 minute when I returned to the garage and asked them what happened to it, and if they could fix it. Ken was now off-shift, and so I ended up with the idiot (maybe the owner?) that I sat in the waiting room listening to as he rudely bullied his realtor over the phone for all to hear. I should have guessed what kind of treatment I was going to get. When I explained the fuel gage problem to this idiot, he insisted that I came in with this pre-existing problem, and that they didn't do anything other than replace the battery but they would fix it at my cost and another hour's worth of my time. I told him it was impossible as I had just gassed the car up just after the ferry and I knew the gage was working just fine. He just shrugged his shoulders and walked away like the "customer service specialist" he was. I was absolutely offended and speechless that this idiot would accuse me of trying to "scam" them... like, sure: I drive ALL THE WAY to Tsawwassen to get some doofus auto shop to fix my previously-perfectly fine gas gage needle! Riiiight. So, now I have to pay to get their screw-up fixed... somewhere else. Just goes to show you: big name-brands like Big O and Shortstop can be just as awful as a fly-by-night garage. Forget this place and keep on driving, Yelpers. read more

Like the previous review, I had an AWFUL experience at this place. We live in Tsawwassen and needed to get a nail pulled out of our right rear tire. My wife took it in and got the tire fixed. $20 and 15 minutes. But that's when the problems started. We drove out to Coquitlam that evening and noticed the car drifting sideways on the highway. We also noticed the steering wheel was out of whack. How could we have an alignment problem all of a sudden? My wife and I both discussed how weird it was especially since Shortstop Auto had fixed the Right Rear tire, not either of the front tires. After returning home, I inspected the tire they had changed and noticed it did not quite line up. I inspected the other side to compare and it became quite obvious to me that the tire they had changed was not on properly. My initial thought was it wasn't fastened on properly and could be an easy fix. So, I brought it back to Shortstop Auto the next day they were open and Ken (the polite salesman) took a look around the car not even checking the right rear wheel tire. He test drove the car and said: "Oh this is an alignment issue". Unfortunately he still ignored my request to look at the rear tire that was jutting out. Instead he quoted me on an alignment fix for $100 and booked me in for the next day. I called later on and canceled saying I'd rather get someone else to fix it, I was disappointed with how they handled this. They called the next day to persuade me to come in. It was Jay this time I spoke with, I think he's the owner, and he said, "we want to find out what happened and fix this problem". That raised my hopes that maybe these guys do care about their reputation and their customers. So again I brought it in. I explained to Jay everything I had to Ken the day before, and that I think there's something wrong with the tire that they fixed. "I don't know what but something has disrupted its alignment" I offered. After a test drive Jay put it up on the lift and looked under the car. He pointed out to me that a suspension bar, attached to the same wheel they had fixed a few days earlier, was bent. "That's the problem right there, your suspension is bent". He also pointed to some mud under the car and deduced that the cause of the damage was a large rock that we drove over. I said we did not hit any rock that would cause this much damage. Furthermore, I challenged, where are the scratches to the parts of the car that were lower to the ground then the suspension? It was clean of any scratches. And the suspension bar was pushed upwards, not in any other direction like forwards of backwards. As if this Rock had jumped out of the road at the precise moment we drove over it. And the bend is smooth, no scratches, as if the rock was wearing a towel to cover its tracks. (Clever Rock). At this point I became very suspect that Ray was taking a big fat bullshit on me, right there, under my own car. He got defensive and thought I was insinuating that it was the jack they used to jack up the car that had the caused the damage. Ironically, that had not yet crossed my mind until he insisted that the jack was used in FRONT of the tire, not behind it. Oh. That's when I started piecing it all together. I texted my wife at her office asking if she remembered "where the guy fixing the tire had placed the jack: In front or behind the tire?" My wife, who did not know why I was asking remembered because our 5 year old wanted to watch the old man fix the tire. So my wife noticed and remembered that detail. She replied: Behind. I told Ray this, that the Jack was used behind the tire instead of in front, and he got even more defensive and spouted that he has 30 years experience and he's seen this type of damage all the time. I told him i have 20 years driving experience and I would know if I ran over a boulder big enough to damage my suspension. By the way, this is a Volvo Station wagon, V70, with two car seats in the back seat for our 5 and 2 year old - would you assume that we go off-roading in this vehicle? From this point on, Ray was pretty unprofessional, in fact he became quite rude and insinuated that I'm trying to bilk free work out of them. Yeah, because it's a scam that us consumers try on mechanics all the time. The damage is over $300.00 and Shortstop Auto refused to pay because they stand by their claim that I ran over a rock. I have submitted a complaint to BBB, will be contacting ICBC with a claim of vandalism to my car against this shop, and have even considered talking to Lynda Steele, a consumer advocate on BCTV. I don't expect to recover any compensation for their wrong doing, but I do hope that Ray and Ken get a little bad Karma for wasting two days out of my work week. They claim to fix cars, but they wrecked mine. read more

was just looking this Big O Tire/Shortstop location in Tsawwassen and saw only two bad reviews so I thought I'd add my good experience here. It was around Christmas 2011 (might have been 2010, but pretty sure 2011). And I was getting a friend to work on my car and realized my wheel lock key was missing. I hadn't used it since I had my tires changed at that Big O Tire about 6 months earlier. So I called asking if they might still have it. They said they were just changing over to new owners (didn't like who I dealt with before really) and wasn't likely they'd have it, but to come in and they'd look for it. They couldn't find it, but the manager or owner (can't recall his name) listened to my story. He then hooked me up with a free replacement key from a wheel/tire shop that I just had to pick up. It was a nice gesture, especially since it was the previous owner and employees fault and no way to prove I didn't just make up the story. So that's why I'm going to use them again. read more

I've been going to Big O/Shortstop for better than 10 years now and I have to say they are every bit of what I would want and expect from a car repair place. Jay and Ken always quote me a hard number for my repairs, and abide by it. They never fix anything unless they receive my okay first and everything works once complete. Of the four vehicles I have owned over this time two have been sophisticated luxury cars and they never have an issue repairing either of them and often at 20% to 40% below the dealer quote. I am more than happy with Big O/Shortstop and will continue providing them with my loyalty when it comes to car repairs. read more

Yes I waited until my brakes were in bad shape, and yes this shop was close by. The estimate with oil change was almost $1400. We gave the go ahead. Upon picking up the car the brake pedal went almost to the floor. Was told that this was normal. On the way home there was a clank every time we hit a bump in the road. The noise got worse so I returned the vehicle a few days later. Sorry was the response, someone did not tighten a bolt or two. Six months later the car vibrated badly when braking. I did not want to take the car back to Short Stop, so when it was time for servicing 5,500 km later I took the car to a Nissan dealership. I was told that the front rotors needed turning, front and rear pads need replacing and that rear rotors were so badly pitted, they need replacing. I even asked the dealership mechanic to see the rear rotors to verify their assessment. It seems that I paid $1400 for inferior parts that lasted me 5,500 km, not the 40,000 km I expected. Guess I will not be returning to Short Stop. read more
