I took my car to a repair shop in Bellingham to get an estimate to stop the rattling that would occur any time the car drove over an area that was not smooth. I had been to this shop for other repairs and oil changes. When I dropped my car off, I told them the only thing I wanted them to do was stop the rattling. The following day I received their estimate - just over $1,400. It included replacing the shocks and struts all around (four total) - nothing else. To get a better idea of the material vs labor cost, I went to O'Reilly's Auto Parts web site and found the shocks and struts for my 2013 Ford Taurus. The struts were about $250 each and the shocks were about $110 each - total retail cost of parts - $720. That meant labor was $680. If the shop's charge for labor is $100/hr., that means labor will take 6.8 hours. That seemed high so I called Superior Auto at 1491 Old Samish Road in Bellingham for the same work. I had never been to their shop before. A few hours later they called me back and quoted a price around $1,000, so I scheduled a time to take my car in. When I dropped my car off, I explained that another shop had told me the rattling was caused by the worn out shocks and struts but I asked them to find out if that was really causing the rattling. The next day they called me and said it was NOT the shocks and struts but the sway bar end links (both L and R side). The price: $335!!!! There is no more rattling!!!!! read more

Mixed feelings - Brought car in to Superior on a recommendation, only to find out the fuel pump they put in was not the issue - it was the Max Air - replaced that quickly - car runs. However now, the fuel gauge doesn't read (it did prior to repair). Most likely the float. Called to have it looked at - agreed to fix it for free - told 9am would be fine, come in - told "I'd like the guy who first fixed it to look at it, he'll be in at noon...." Brought the car back and was told everything is fine, it's the gauge that doesn't work and proceed to argue when told the car had to be on, for the gauge to register (to test the float) that "he (mechanic) knows what he's doing." read more

I've been bringing my vehicles to Todd for more than ten years and can say without hesitation that he's the best mechanic I've ever found. A lot of shops are obviously geared towards maximizing each sale. On numerous occasions when I thought I needed a major repair, Todd "downsold" me to a less expensive fix, never taking advantage of the fact that basically I don't know squat about cars. All this and he's a nice guy. His place is a little out of the way but that's a very small price to pay for the integrity and quality work at very reasonable prices.
