I took my truck in for intermittent stalling and rough idle issues and paid $240 for diagnostics, but left with no actual diagnosis or path forward. The main recommendation I received was a PCM recalibration recall related to random downshifting into 1st gear, which is completely unrelated to my stalling issue. They also told me to reinstall the OEM throttle body and intake, even though the problems originally started while the truck still had the factory parts installed. I only installed quality OEM+ aftermarket parts afterward while attempting to troubleshoot the issue myself. To make matters worse, they recommended a rear differential fluid service and used the attached fluid sample as justification, despite me having personally changed the fluid only ~2,000 miles earlier. When I mentioned that, I was told the truck may just be a "lemon" because it already had multiple issues. Old ladies, beware! I'm sure I was ripped off by the people at Gateway. I took my minivan in for a/c repair (2nd time in less than a year, first time lasted 3 months) and drove away 4 days and almost $9,000 later. After telling me an oil pressure problem made it unsafe to drive, I authorized work on that, only to have them add on more and more things at more and more expense. Were they all necessary? I doubt it. Was the work actually done? I don't know. I don't trust them at all and will never go back. Part of the reason is the lack of communication. The first day my van sat there all day, with nothing being done, because their diagnostic machine didn't work. The next visit lasted 3 days, during which I got ONE phone call asking me to authorize work via text. Then crickets for the next 2 1/2 days. I called twice and got voicemail, which went unanswered. My daughter also called to ask for a copy of the invoice, as she and my son-in-law were suspicious. Also no follow-up. By the time I got a text saying it was ready, I was on my way -- on foot -- to pick it up before they closed. Never again! read more

Gateway automotive treated me great when valvoline overfilled my oil by several quarts and made my car break down and not want to start! After it was towed to gateway on valvolines dime Gateway did a full diagnostic and was thorough with their search and found that a pcv valve was saturated in oil from Valvolines mistake. The highly knowledgeable and awesome mechanic named Ruben replaced it and also let me know of other things that need to be changed as soon as possible. I brought my jeep in and explained the problem I was having (rev hang and a whistle). They couldn't figure it so I came back and showed them. While showing them I noticed that my front brakes are now sticking. Somehow they messed up my brakes while diagnosing it! So basically I paid $300 for a worse off jeep. It was a loose intake manifold (which I told them to check) that I fixed myself. Now I get to figure out what happened to my brakes... The mechanic tried to tell me the rev hang is normal (it's now gone), and the brakes were bad to begin with (they never smoked before!!!). I wouldn't trust these guys with wiper blades. read more

For a further update, I still haven't heard back from Vollan's Automotive. The number he claimed to use was a # I haven't used for almost 10 yrs. He could've referred to my last (huge) work order and got my # from there, that seems the logical thing to do, right?. Needless to say, there has been no word from the owner, Chris, no compensation given, nothing. Talk about getting royally screwed by a mechanic. Thank goodness I found an honest one here in San Diego, however........ I am unable to pay for the work it needs now, and I am forced to sell it AS IS, and go without a vehicle. What a loss. Lesson learned? Never tell a mechanic you are moving out of state before you give them a huge work order on your vehicle. read more

Last Friday night I had the unfortunate experience of overheating on highway 20, about 90 miles from civilization, and with no cell phone service. After hitch hiking into the lovely Mazama, WA and spending the night, I got a tow back to Sedro Woolley. Carl (from Carl's towing) helped set me up with Brenda(service advisor) from Vollans when we got in cell range, and even though they were closing at 2pm (on a saturday) and our expected arrival was 1pm, they agreed to get me in. When I arrived Chris (the owner) was smiles and took me in straight away. He was very forthcoming and said "it all comes down to parts if we can get you done today". I *absolutely* appreciate any business owner being forthcoming - it's a sign of a good place to be. We waited about 10 minutes for the diagnosis, and indeed my radiator decided to split right open after 205k miles. Lucky for me my 1999 infiniti I30t is the same car as the 1999 maxima, and the part was in stock, and we could be fixed in about an hour. He sent us off the the super Mestizo Mexican restaurant to kill some time and watch a world cup match....and maybe have a margarita :-) Even though he was due to close at 2pm, he personally assisted his main tech and wrapped up at 230pm and had us back on the road. Highlights of my experience with them: * They missed a major, easily recognizable leak upon initial diagnosis, leading to significant charges beyond the initial estimate * While test-driving my vehicle, their mechanic collided my car with a parked car * They told me all parts and labor were covered by a 2-year, nationwide warranty provided by NAPA, but when the transmission installed by Vollans failed, NAPA refused to honor my warranty claim, stating that the transmission wasn't covered by their warranty * Vollans Automotive delayed for two months before agreeing to pay for the transmission replacement * My car was legal in all 50 states when delivered to Vollans Automotive, but they installed an exhaust part that did not meet the 50-state certification, preventing me from renewing my vehicle registration until after I paid for a replacement part * They refused to take any responsibility for this mistake, leaving me little choice but to sue them * The suit took several months and, after I won the suit, they waited another two months before paying me the court-ordered judgement read more

We're on an extended road trip and had a check engine light come on. We were headed to North Cascades National Park and didn't really know what to do. Saw that these guys had good reviews so we set up an appointment. They were able to determine what was wrong and told us to come back later in the afternoon so they could work on it. We brought it back and they didn't end up having the part but made the effort to get the part from somewhere else in town. They did everything they could to make sure they got done soon so we could continue on our trip and to our reservations. The owner is super super nice and very friendly and knowledgeable. The service manager, who told us what was up and gave a quote, was a little curt but was very straightforward. He told us we could finish our trip fine it just needed to be fixed sometime, so he was super honest and didn't make it sound like it had to be done now just so they got the business. The guy who actually worked on our car went OUT OF HIS WAY to make sure that everything else was good with the car. He thought he heard an issue, let us know, and then drove around and realized what it was and that it wasn't a problem. He was honest with us and didn't try to make up something else we had to have fixed, and wasn't ashamed to say he was wrong. If you need somewhere to stop in the area go here. These guys are friendly, helpful, and really care about getting you all set. They have a large sitting area if you need to wait, otherwise the downtown area has many shops and restaurants to choose from. They saved the day! read more

Last week, my check engine light came on as I was driving to work. My husband and I decided that we would go to the highest rated mechanic in town. After this experience, I can definitely see why! I called Vollans as soon as I got home and got to speak with Tim. I told him that I'd had a flashing thermostat indicator sometime prior and that our engine light had come in. He suggested that I come in right away and made room for me on the schedule. When I got there, Tim was all smiles and humor and totally made me feel comfortable. When he asked me how I was planning on getting home, I'd mentioned that I could walk (I live about a half mile away. Not very far at all). Tim was like, "Absolutely not!" and arranged for me to get a ride home with one of guys there who was leaving for the day (I'm sorry, I forgot his name. But, he was great too!). Tim got back to me within a little while and told me that our water pump was leaking and that both our water pump and thermostat needed to be replaced. With parts, service and having to take the engine apart, the repair would come out to about $1100. While he was explaining this, I in no way felt like he was taking me for a ride. But, I'm not a car person myself and said I would like to call my husband. Tim totally understood that, and I felt no pressure at all. My husband ended up speaking with Tim, and it was decided that we would go ahead and do the repair. That's about the time when I remembered that we have 360 coverage on our vehicle. I called Tim and he offered to look in our glove box to see if it was there. He said that he would give us a call back if he found it. An hour later or so, Tim called me. He and his crew had been on the phone with our warranty service for almost an hour answering all sorts of questions. Granted, this was something I was gearing to do myself, and I was completely surprised that they went ahead and talked to them on their own, especially as it was nearing the end of the day, and I was sure everyone wanted to go home. But, here's the kicker. They saved us about $700 on the repair and said that might be able to save us just a little bit more (which they did). So, that $1100 bill for us was slashed to $420, which is a pretty penny in any case, but it means the world for our little family right now. Today is Monday, and I got to pick my car back up. Tim arranged for Derek to come and pick me up from my home. Again, no way he was going to let me walk. And, we got to visit for a little bit while he rung me up. It was wonderful getting to know him a little bit more and felt more like a friend than talking to the mechanic. Now, I know at this point, you're probably like, "TL;DR" (too long, didn't read), but this is the reason we'll be coming back. I'm pregnant, and my husband and I recently learned that our little one as a rare congenital defect. Because of this, I'm traveling to either Bellingham or Seattle almost weekly for testing and doctors appointments. We need our car, and given that we are looking at a couple months in the NICU one Baby is born, we definitely need the savings. Tim and the crew knew none of this, but they still did everything they could to help us out and treated us honestly the best I've ever been treated at an auto mechanic. To me, that speaks to Tim's character and the character of the team at Vollans. They were honestly God-sent to me and in a way, has me excited to go there again for oil changes and anything else that our cars may need. When you're going through a rough time, the last thing you need is car trouble. But, this has been hands down one of the best experiences I've had and has been a real blessing for our little family. Took my car in for a engine light, something to so with bank 1 took them weeks no phone call or anything, finally got one saying they think its a intake gasket leak and time said he will call again tomorrow about the parts well guess what no phone call.... 3 more weeks went by heard nothing! 2 and a half months now have gone by! I called and asked whats up and he told me he's busy he will call me when he is done with customer, well no call back again so i just showed up to pick the car up hours later and he's sitting there doing nothing! Also my car rain guards have been busted off and one is missing now also this whole time they had my car i would drive by and car is just sitting outside! I chose Vollans Automotive because their online reviews were very good. Read ALL of the reviews including the 1 & 2 star ratings AT THE BOTTOM. I took my truck in on a Monday and they diagnosed two issues with my transmission but did not fix it. On the second day they called me in and removed the transmission pan. Yep, small shavings must mean something more is wrong. I had a warranty on the transmission and Vollans agreed to coordinate with me and the warranty company. The warranty company terms required permission to proceed with repairs. The service manager described the process to complete the job which included my permission and the warranty company's permission to proceed. I asked him how much it would cost. He said worst case scenario - $5500 to $6000. I spoke with him the next day and he told me my transmission had been taken to their transmission shop (ding ding - they owned both shops). I said "gee you didn't get my permission to do that". He said he spoke with the warranty company and got their permission. I called the warranty company - they said "no we did not give permission to move the transmission". Then they said they would not honor the warranty if work was done by Vollans. The service manager had at a minimum been very manipulative if not outright dishonest. I called Vollans and asked them to discontinue work and I would pick up the truck. The owner of the business called me and asked what happened. I told him - he didn't seem that concerned about the service managers dishonesty (my bad, BIG CLUE I let pass) The owner discussed with me with great sincerity what happened and "oh, by the way, the problem with the transmission was not as bad as they thought and it would cost a lot less" - (another missed clue - they DID NOT have permission to evaluate the transmission). I took the bait and arranged for them to complete the work and warranty company allowed us to proceed. So late Friday the owner called and gave me two options 1) fix the transmission for $3800 and get a 90 day warranty or 2) rebuild the transmission for $5500 and get a brand new rebuilt transmission with a 100% nationwide 3 year warranty. I told him I would let him know Monday. Over the weekend I looked at other options and found a remanufactured transmission online for $2610 including shipping. They would help me arrange installation with a local automotive shop - cost about $700 to install. Well, the Vollans owner said it would cost a lot less and now they are pushing me to spend the $5500. Call it salesmanship or dishonesty or whatever - I was not happy and just wanted out of this situation. On Monday I called and asked how much it would cost to just pick up my truck. $1091! They agreed to place the transmission in lots of pieces in the back of my truck. When I entered their place of business I found the service manager and another employee with snickering smiles on their faces. I had the truck towed 37 miles away for a cost of $350 - ouch, but it was competitive. And I was done with Vollans Automotive! The above is factual. The following is not because I'm telling what I learned from someone else. Vollans has other customers who have had very bad experiences. Rumor is they have a pending lawsuit as a result of how they do business. So I spent $1091 with Vollans (for what?), $350 to have the truck towed and less than $3400 to buy and have the remanufactured transmission installed. Total cost $4841. I still saved $700. And I would have saved $2141 had I never taken my truck to Vollans. And I wasted a week trying to deal with Vollans. And the Vollans transmission could possibly have given me lot's of trouble. I totally made the right decision. (After making several bad errors of judgement) But it was worth it! By the way, after almost two months the transmission is working awesome! I highly recommend for you to explore options online - it's easy and they have a great reputation. Also, in my opinion, the service manager and owner work as a tag team at Vollans. I got passed to the owner so they could back up each other's stories in case. Also there is more to this story, I just told the high points. You can read their rebuttal and choose who to believe. By the way, I owned a business and if I had an employee like the Vollan's service manager, he would have been fired on the spot! You can't just "say" you're doing what's right for the customer. Really professional and honest. We were happy with our first time working with Vollans, especially after having a really bad experience at another shop in Burlington. We had an oil change, timing belt changed (which included the water pump and a few other things)and they fixed some of what the previous shop didn't do correctly like the valve cover gasket. Our car is driving 100% better and cost less all together than what we had been quoted by the other shop for just the timing belt. They were really open and trustworthy and answered any and all questions my husband and I had. We would highly recommend this shop to anyone needing trustworthy car work. I live an hour away, didn't know where to begin, and dread going to unfamiliar mechanics. What an exceptionally excellent experience! Unfortunately, Vollans has changed ownership and Kevin the office manager is no longer employed there. The new owner tried to charge my teenage son for an excessive amount of shop time. I was astounded that he would try to rob a young kid. I had to step in and let him know that he was acting fraudelent. In the end, I feel that we were still way overcharged for the installation of headlights. At first the owner was trying to charge my son $262 and I called him out on the actual amount of time they spent on my sons car. I ended up paying $185 in shop time which I still believe was a total rip off. I will never do business there again and I will no longer send my clients to them for repairs. read more

I was dropping my son off at his trade school on a Sunday night, after his weekend visit at home, when our car over heated and I had to leave it over night in this town. We didn't want to rent a tow-dolly and tow it all the way home, so I looked up auto shops in this town on the net and on Yelp. After reading reviews and info about some of the shops here, I chose this shop and called them first thing Monday morning. They were more than happy to have a look at our car. We live about an hour and a half away from Sedro Woolley, so it was late morning before we could get the car to this shop. They are very nice people and they took great care of us. They replaced the radiator and cooling lines. They could have had it ready for us to pick up on Tues, but we weren't able to trek back out there until Thurs. We recommend this shop for the good work, friendly service, and decent prices. They really know how to treat people right and are very fair and honest. We would definitely have these guys be our regular shop, IF we lived closer to them. Thieves. Our car was in for a week. When we went to get it on Friday afternoon, they were rushing to finish (they could have kept it longer and finished it decently). We were charged over $700 to fix the mysterious problem of dying out while driving. When the problem was not resolved, we took it to our original mechanic in Seattle who called Vollan's to access the diagnostic tests we were charged for - Vollan's had no record of them and could not explain why (meaning they did not do them?). Did they only change the spark plug wires and call it good? Shame on them for charging us for diagnostic tests they did not perform and who knows what else. Beware of a person with a a cause to be humorous. Just because a person cracks jokes while talking with you does not mean they can be trusted. I used Vollans last year to fix a problem with my f350 they found the problem right away, but took too long to make the repair according to other professionals I talked with. A 1200.00 repair ended up to be 1600.00. That was for replacing the ficm. I called them a month later and asked the cost to replace a glow plug, he responded they don't like to make a quote without seeing a vehicle, I said off the top of your head if the problem turns out to be a glow plug, he then said glow plugs cost 75.00 I asked why so much, he responded they use special glow plugs. I checked with three different part suppliers, they all quoted me 20.00. Just be careful and research with other pros or even on line before you trust him to have your vehicle without a solid quote first. read more

took my car to Chris after being told by another shop in Sedro Woolley that It needed all kinds of parts and work and they charged me $35.00 for this "diagnosis". I wasn't willing to pay that much. A friend recommended Vollans so I took it to them and told them what the other shop told me and they quoted me a price $200.00 less so I said go ahead. After they checked the car out they told me that all it needed was a new hose for the power steering. This car is still on the road today and hasn't had any more issues. I haven't and will not take my vehicle anywhere else. they are honest and treat you like a friend even if you just met. the staff and the mechanics are the best and Chris is someone I'm happy to to call friend. He has on numerous occasions went above and beyond for me when I had troubles, he gives me a couple of options for what needs to be done and I always ask him which he would do and go with that, I trust this man that much. My truck is there now and can't wait to get it back so I can see how much better it's driving, I know I'll be happy with the results. Tim, Chris, and their crew turned a horrible experience into one as pleasant as it can get. My Dodge Cummins diesel engine lift pump and injector pump went out somewhere between Marblemount and New Halem. A helpful biker stopped to render help and left me the information for calling Dave's Towing, which rendered aid in about 25 minutes out of Concrete. Dave's Towing recommended Volland's in Sedro Woolley, WA. where excellent diesel repairs could be made. He called ahead to have Volland's crew waiting to check out the problem. Tim Bennet and Chris Volland and their crew got right on the problem and presented my options. Parts were waiting next morning and by day's end the truck was ready. Chris researched best prices, and best warranty for those parts. Meanwhile his son offered his Dodge truck to tow my trailer to camp North of Winthrop where fellow campers were waiting. Instead we decided to stay with the truck and subsequently while having an excellent sandwich at Coconut Kenny"s arrived back at Volland's shop to find our trailer had been set up and leveled and hooked up to water and power, ready for our overnight stay! What service! Late that night a call informed us of an apparent break in at our home. Next morning, upon inquiring about a rental car to accommodate the Deputies for doing a house search for unwanted occupants, Tim reached for his pickup keys and said it's full of fuel, take it. WARNING! Stay Away from this place!!!! they use deceptive, unethical and unscrupulous practices! Tim LIES like a rug! acts like He is your friend but will stab you in the back and smile as He does it. He tried to cheat my Brother once and I called Him on it and He adjusted the bill by $40. If I had not spoken up my brother would have been Cheated out of $40 I was CHEATED and taken for $312+..... Tim LIED and said I had a bad wheel bearing and I knew wheel bearings only cost about $20 to $35 so I said go ahead and fix it and might as well do the opposite side too. It turned out I did not have wheel bearings on the front of my Blazer.....I have Wheel Hub bearing Assemblies!...and that is a HUGE DIFFERENCE! I am a fairly good mechanic but had pressing business that did not allow me to get the leaky freeze plugs fixed as that is what I took it in for. I asked Tim to look at the suspension because I knew I needed pitman arm, idler arm etc (and to give me a quote and even the quote had prices DOUBLE what retail is) and that is when He said I had a bad WHEEL BEARING. I know wheel bearings only cost $30 and that is why I said on the phone to go ahead replace them. Tim KNOWS I am frugal and if something costs too much I do the work myself so if He would have said I had a bad WHEEL HUB BEARING ASSEMBLY which is the correct nomenclature or name of the part, I would have known they are a lot more than $30 and I would have told Him I would do that repair myself and to just do the freeze plug repair that I brought it in for. NOW....to make matters worse He said they only use parts that have a Limited Lifetime Warranty and stand behind their work. When I went to pick up my Blazer and Tim hit me with a bill OVER $1,100.00 I was in shock! The freeze plug issue was quoted to me by Tim at around $200 TOTAL!! What He called wheel bearings cost $306 EACH at least that is what He says but my investigation shows HE IS A LIAR! and I have documented PROOF which I plan on presenting to Tim tomorrow. He even LIED about it taking 2 hrs to R&R the started motor which had to be done to have access to the rear freeze plug. There is a guy on YouTube who did it on the same Blazer in just ONE HOUR and He did not have a fancy car lift like Vollans and had to roll around on the ground under the vehicle so Vollans should have done it in under one hour. As I said I am a pretty good mechanic and even I I can do it in an hour or less. The guys video was 27 minutes so I typed Him a comment and asked Him what the actual time was to R&R the starter motor because my mechanic said it took them 2 hours and His reply back to my comment was " If it took them 2 hours then they SUCK!" The only 2 companies that manufacture wheel Hub assemblies that have a Limited Lifetime Warranty cost $112 and the other $150 so for Tim to charge me $612 for two of them is more than Highway Robbery! Repair shops are supposed to buy at wholesale and then charge the customer retail. Sometimes customers even furnish the parts so for Tim to MORE THAN DOUBLE the cost was unscrupulous, unethical deceptive and DISHONEST! I will give Tim a chance to "Man Up" and if still LIES and doesn't return the $312 He STOLD from me I will hurt Vollans Economically!. I will make a YouTube video showing all my documented Proof and explain a little more in detail than I have here, I will show the quote he gave me and the prices I got clearly showing that again Tim was DOUBLING Parts prices and I will make a website saying VOLLANS IS DISHONEST, I will place ads on Craigslist saying the same thing, I will have banners made and place them on the rear of my Blazer, my brothers truck and my nephews car who is a Fireman in Sedro Woolley land I will get a bunch of friends and we will use our 1st amendment rights and picket outside of Vollans. And I will park my Blazer right across the street of Vollans for as long as it takes with a BIG sign saying Vollans is a DISHONEST Repair shop. And now since I found two more people here at this website who were cheated by Vollans I will link this page on my YouTube video as well as the websites I will place on EVERY SEARCH ENGINE there is on the internet. just had my timing belt changed on 2000 accord. maybe its just me but even seems to run smoother. great price, did not try to oversell, did recommend things because labor included anyway, water pump, fan belts, antifreeze. said seals and hoses looked good. only bad thing was battery must have been disconnected and i lost radio station programming. overall very happy and will be back. sedro is off i5 a bit but he seems to draw in traffic from all over. there is a nice deli in attached building and free wifi. open weekends and was doing 3 or 4 engine swaps while i was there. read more
