I've been in here several times, seeking my counterculture fix -- harder to find with each passing year -- and it doesn't disappoint. For old time residents of Northampton, this is in the old Beyond Words building, and I don't doubt that the spirit of beloved Maple, the bookstore's cat, would be pleased that ST keeps a store cat of their own. Dodging the cat (unlike with Maple, the owners prefer you not poke their kitty), there's a good selection of jewelry, clothing, incense and knickknacks, and at reasonable prices for this overpriced college town. My most recent purchase was a pair of Nepalese cotton shirts with nice muted patterns for $16 apiece, a tie-dyed pillow for my computer chair, and a colored paper lantern that fits nicely over a lamp. Places like the Mercantile and Faces are long gone, but ST's here to pick up the slack. Give them a shot. read more

I WISH THERE WAS A ZERO STAR OPTION! I am completely appalled by my latest experience here. I've been shopping here since i turned 18 and never had any issues. On Saturday July 19, i went into the store with my best friend and immediately felt the eyes of a certain older employee. We went upstairs and purchase some items because we are over 21, came back downstairs just to browse and ended up finding some cute rings and we wanted to get matching ones. The woman at the counter with dark hair in a low ponytail and glasses, kept starring at us the ENTIRETY of our time there and while we were looking through the cheap rings she was STARRING at every movement we made and we could feel her energy. We were ready to cash out and i already paid and she goes "Now where's the mood ring" confused i go, I go "I don't know i didn't purchase a mood ring" and she proceeds to tap on the box, insinuating that i stole a ring. Stunned, i repeat my answer, honestly i was left speechless. She was watching my best friend and i the entire time she knew we didn't take anything. I then proceed to put my purchase from upstairs and my purse on the counter and tell her "Do you want to check my bags?" I was completely fine with her doing so and i stated that multiple times, i had nothing to hide; i even patted down my pockets. She said "No, if you say so" Because she KNEW I didn't have anything and she just wanted to feel powerful and try to embarrass someone. After asking her to search my bags multiple times she refused and i walked out. Furious, upset, and embarrassed i called the store in hopes to speak to a Manager but unfortunately had to speak to that same woman claiming to be the manager. I didn't get her name and I didn't know i was speaking to her on the phone until she cut me off and asked me for the ring back, i told her i don't have your four dollar mood ring, you can check your cameras, i offered multiple times for you to check my bags, i patted myself down, why do you keep trying to push this narrative? She then starts yelling at me; wouldn't let me speak, called me fourteen, despite WATCHING me go upstairs and make a purchase with my ID (my thing is if im fourteen why do you feel so good arguing with a fourteen year old, you're a grown woman and that makes you feel good?) and said she can SMELL fake from a mile away with my jewelry and with my perfume, and my clothes and my hair, talking about my appearance. This is a grown woman! She admitted to profiling me and said if i come in again i will be profiled again. She was only watching my best friend and i, who are women of color; watching us like a HAWK i should say bc she did not take her eyes off us the entire time of us being in there. be Because of my appearance she was profiling us from the minute we walked in. I come to Main Street after visiting my grandma's plot because she's buried 3 minutes away from there and i like to go there afterwards to feel some good energy and get my mind off the cemetery, and this experience completely ruined my day. I've never been racially profiled to this extent before, i've never been accused of stealing. I am completely horrified at the incompetence of her behavior and her customer service skills, she clearly is looking for some power and needs some serious healing. The utter disrespect and lack of common sense is completely ridiculous and unprofessional. Now i know not to support this business no longer. I wish she would've tried to do that BEFORE my purchase because i wouldn't have purchased anything; but due to their no return policy i'm burdened with these items that have been tainted by that nasty women's energy. I would hate to work with her i just know she's a nightmare of a person. DONT shop here unless you wanted to be profiled, judged, and humiliated by grown women who don't have their light anymore, just looking to drain the energy and light of other people. If you're going to sell metaphysical items, please hire employees with good intentions and good energy, because that was completely dehumanizing and humiliating, and just disgusting. read more

I've been going here for years, and it's truly one of my favorite spots. The staff are friendly and always willing to help you find what you're looking for... or not looking for . I always find exactly what I need and then some here, and spending more money than I planned to. This place is more dangerous than target They sell soo many different things it's impossible to list them all. Lets just say I've never seen a store quite like it, and they're always getting new things in. Also the clothes are made by Shop Therapy Imports, which then doubles as the wholesaler for the storefronts. Which how many stores sell their own clothing these days? Not many. I will say though the clothes are not plus size friendly, and they do cater to white folks with misplaced spiritualism. But cant blame a business for supplying what's in demand and those folks would be buying that stuff either way. I've bought a lot of jewelry and pieces from here and they've all lasted. I think it's way more organized and nicer than the P-town store, although the P-town store has a better selection of sex toys. read more

Love this place! I go to Shop Therapy in Provincetown as well...and I must admit...I'm digging the Northampton location a bit more. It's really clean, easy to browse (and find stuff)...and the staff was super helpful. Tons of hippie-style things to wear along with fun jewelry, blankets, stickers, incense...etc. Upstairs you'll find adult novelty items as well as smoking/vaping supplies. I asked if that part of the business has been on an uptick...and yes. Yes it has. (Since the legalization of marijuana in MA). Totally groovy. read more

This was always the go to place in town for misc smoking, alternative tchotchkes, and random things. Never left it off my list of places to go in Northampton when I happened to be in town. In May I decided to buy myself a water pipe as I had never owned one, and went to shop therapy to purchase one. Looked around, and found one I liked. I picked it up along with some cleaner at the store managers advice. Managed to use the pipe about 3 times in a week or so. Kept it on a shelf in my room. Dry and clean. One day I went to use it and it had developed cracks running down both sides of the piece. I called up and they told me they don't give refunds for glass items, but I could bring it to them and maybe get a discount off another. same guy was there as before and we agreed on a 45% discount on the same design pipe as before, assured that this type of thing never happens. Two weeks later, the pipe cracks in the same way.. at this point I am home in New Jersey and cannot come in to get a refund. I go back and forth with the owner, manager, and warehouse manager. They have started ignoring me, and are being unprofessional. All I was asking for was a refund or replacement, as a normal business should do. I have worked retail, this is how things work. Don't buy glassware from these people, it's not made well, and they won't help you when it breaks. Update: Never resolved anything at the shop, never got a call back. Awful read more

Not worth it. 90% of the store is just commodified buddhism aimed at white kids. Employees hover like crazy and accuse you of shoplifting or they'll sit there high and unaware of anything happening. Tried going upstairs with my suite mates and they IDed us 3 times. One employee asked if I brought my passport as he wouldn't accept my uni ID, then kicked me out and hovered over us talking loudly about us to other employees. After one of my friends checked out, the same employee (devin I think?) told other coworkers on the floor, "look!! that guy just stole incense!!" sending an employee to chase him down and bring him back in the store, only to realize that he did in fact paid for everything. We followed the arrows in the store, but devin insisted to his coworkers this was clearly suspicious bc we were "taking the longest way around the store". I've worked in customer service for years and i've never seen someone handle interactions so astoundingly poor. read more

My Friend and I just left this store and I was so displeased with the service I had to write this review. The women downstairs with the double lower lop piercing was snarky and rude. The girls complained about customers browsing. Without the customers there would be no need for rude tatortots like herself to work there. The guy upstairs was cool. All the staff I've dealt with are hip, down-to-earth, and easy to talk to, as well. It makes sense that Ronny's stores are as awesome as the characters of those who run them! Love this shop! When my boyfriend and I are feeling adventurous we take a trip from CT to Northampton, MA. With all the shops in the surrounding area, this is by far my favorite! It has everything from hippie/bohemian clothing, tie dye, accessories to Sex toys, smoking paraphernalia, and much more generally awesome stuff! The staff is also very down to earth and easy going. One man in particular helped us out in the smoke/sex toy department. He really spent his time with us making suggestions and explaining the ins and outs of the items we were interested in. He was super knowledgable of the products he was selling and saved us from reading the wretched mile long directions that came with our purchases. Just love this place! I have bought many bags, jackets, dresses, sex toys etc. and plan to keep coming back ! Not to mention.. I'm pretty sure they have a shop cat. Which is AWESOME. read more

My Wife and I stopped in to spend a few hundred dollars on silver jewelry as she was starting a new office job in a few days, and wanted to feel good about it all. When she asked an employee for assistance looking at and trying on jewelry, she was told by a staff member, "Okay, but you will have to hurry because I am training someone". The staff member came over and seemed annoyed, and rushed us through and seemed like she was more interested in going back to what she was doing. So at that point we felt the energy, and cut short our shopping feeling like we did something wrong. We looked around the store a minute more, and left. As we left the staff person went back to standing around with two other staff members, and noted they were talking about sandwich's, not work. Is this okay, or the reason why all the small shops in our City go under with staff members who prefer to socialize rather than actually work and cater to customers. The rich Smith college girls are not around anymore. Shops like this will have to work for buisness now. I know that sounds hard to this generation, but too bad. This is why Amazon is winning! They have the best priced mexican weave blankets anywhere and they are a really good quality. It is your standard hippie stop but they have so many things. Dresses, blankets, adult things upstairs, dreamcatchers, signs, etc. The whole place smells like incense and if you look down you can see toys at the kids eye level too. My kids love this place (15, 12, 2). Very different ages but all find something. I think I spend at least $200 every time I go here. I love it. read more

It was very Busy the first time I went to return something that I bought there. The people were awesome! They remembered me I think one of them even call me by my first name and they help me out tremendously.
