Thankfully, my guest enjoyed her meal. I thought the food was fine. I've seen your responses to prior guests, Kamal, so I don't have any expectations other than receiving a generic response also. We, too, paid about the same as Masha for our two meals with no drinks and one order of hummus and pita bread--close to $80.00. There were a few things that surprised us, especially for The Cove, that made us have buyers' remorse, although I do take ownership for suggesting your restaurant after noticing it during our walk. 1.) Not only in La Jolla, but for any reputable restaurant located anywhere, the goal should always be "customer obsession." We did not plan to come to your restaurant, but because the one we intended to visit nearby had already closed, we stopped into Zoya as a hopeful alternative. Unfortunately, we were seated shortly before the kitchen was due to close. However, customers that earnestly enter your establishment during business hours shouldn't feel that pressure--we did. It was communicated to us in a manner that pressured us to make a rapid decision as to what to order. It could have just been a training opportunity, which we thought it was, but unfortunately I think it's in your restaurant's culture/DNA. Why? There were about 6-8 other guests already eating inside, and yet, by the time our dinner came out, your staff were already putting chairs on top of empty tables throughout the restaurant, and on tables next to diners as they ate. It felt like the whole place was shutting down around us and our food had just arrived! I don't believe a majority of your guests ever truly intend to come in at the last minute before closing to spite your employees, but it left me wondering about the lack of hospitality we all experienced. 2.) As my guest and I were sat outside in a dimly lit area, your waiters, as a courtesy, should ALWAYS proactively point out that your business adds a 4% charge for all credit cards when closing out the bill. Only customers that retain a receipt might notice that stipulation, but it wasn't entirely clear that we were charged more until after-the-fact. Additionally, your receipts have a two-tiered category of suggested tips (e.g., Tip (30%) $19.84 and suggest tip adjacent to one that says $19.07 on our bill, so on, and so on, further creating confusion. And lastly, 3.) Please update your in-restaurant menus. I'm 100% certain that your menu lists/listed a Chicken Shawarma bowl for $19.00, yet we were charged $22.00 each (not inclusive of tax). Hummus and Pita bread was $14. So between menu pricing discrepancies, no mention of the 4% extra charge for using a credit card, and tip amounts on your POS terminals instantly suggesting tips from 18-30% at your business, it's easy to understand Masha's perplexity, and surely many others' surprise, along with an uneasy feeling of 'what just happened?' after leaving your restaurant. Tips are earned, and although the 'closing-down-soon-service' was not at all appreciated, we still left one of the suggested tip amounts in the spirit of generosity. I sincerely hope you'll take the appropriate steps to properly train your staff, unambiguously correct your menu pricing, and create an atmosphere of CUSTOMER OBSESSION that makes patrons feel valued, want to return beyond a "special occasion," and add to your list of 5-star reviews. I was told while the one on the normal menu was $47, the special was $55 and the only difference between the two was the special would be lit on fire table side. I didn't feel the flames were necessary, so I skipped that. (However, the special did mention a sauce that I'm not sure was actually on the regular one, so I don't actually know.) A few minutes before the food came out, they asked if we wanted it all together or if it would be ok for my husband and our friends food to come out first since they were still finishing my fish. I said to just bring it out when it was ready, however they ended up bringing it out together anyway. The confusing part though, all of our meals weren't served warm? You'd think if they were waiting on mine to be done it would have been at least warm? It wasn't. The branzio was very plainly seasoned, tasted heavily of oil and was also somewhat dry? I got it with the whipped sweet potatoes, which was very creamy, which was unlike any way I've ever had sweet potatoes before, but they didn't taste particularly good? We each tried them and none of us could figure out what it was like, but we all agreed we didn't enjoy them. My husband got the arrecherea, it was fine, but also cold. The fries it came with was probably the best part, they were crispy even while being cold. Our friend got the stuffed Mediterranean Stuffed Pepper, his meal also wasn't warm, and he said some of the rice wasn't cooked all the way and it was hard. We also got the Puccia Bread & Spreads after seeing positive reviews. I normally love feta cheese, but the feta dip was kind of sweet? Same with the eggplant. The only spread that was good was the butter. Personally, I thought the bread was fine? But it was almost a bit doughy. Overall, we weren't very impressed with the meal. It had a lot of potential, but the food just didn't hit the mark.

First, a charming little glass jar filled with lightly whipped crème fraîche and topped with salted caramel--simple, elegant, and absolutely delicious. And then... the "hamburger." Cue the table going completely silent. Naturally, we had questions. Our server walked us through this masterpiece from the bottom up: a golden caramel cake "bun," topped with a chocolate-coated ice cream "patty," a delicate mango gelée "cheese," and even "pickles" made from matcha cake. Finished with a second warm cake layer and a touch of garnish we were too excited to fully catch--because at that point, we were already diving in. The contrast of warm cake, cool ice cream, and rich chocolate was nothing short of fantastic. Playful, unexpected, and genuinely delicious--exactly the kind of dessert experience you hope to stumble upon. Thank you, The Whaling Bar, for the sweet surprises. Tough place to work or eat. Rats running around the back and roach infested where the equipment we used to service was. I kept it to myself not to insult a fellow local business but after getting a review from one of the staff that we were crooks, it prompted me to return the favor and leave a real review for them. They have a 15 year old video system that they supplied all the equipment and now that it is failing they want us to fix it for free. One repair fixed and paid for, then expected the next one free when the equipment is failing one by one. It's a shame because when it was run by the prior owner it was a great place. He would feed us all the time we would work there. Theae guys offered to feed us and we politely said "no thank you". I am not one to leave negative reviews, but when attacked with false allegations against me and my business, I will only come back with an honest review right back. read more

Stacy is the greatest bartender ever! We made our way down to this gem during a business trip while staying at the Sheraton. After randomly finding ourselves at karaoke night, Stacy helped us enjoy our last night in town.
