I grew up on Shoney's. It used to be a Saturday night routine. Club sandwiches, chicken tenders, all with that great sweet n sour sauce that had the pineapple in it. Since moving away, I've longed to return. While visiting family for the holidays, we treated ourselves. I must say it fell way short on my memories. I do not recommend this Shoney's. The tables are dirty (the customers next to us asked that their table be cleaned before they would order). They will not give you menus. You have to ask for them (they were in a drawer). Apparently, they don't want to cook anything to order. They'd rather you order the "fresh food bar" for $15. But it was disgusting! I used to be a big fan of Shoney's. The food was always good. Consistent. This food today, OMG. The mashed potatoes tasted like congealed glue. The scrambled eggs tasted like gritty yellow mush. The macaroni salad was rubbery and tasteless. Thank God for the sliced pineapple. After my one and only small plate of food (mostly a small salad for $15), I used the pineapple to clean my pallet. My husband called it good ole fashion' slop thrown in troughs for hogs. My son ordered a cheeseburger and fries for $10.50. Made to order -- wasn't bad. But he said it wasn't good either. A watered down coke was $3.50. They were out of other options. The cashier asked how everything was. We said not good. She said ok. That was it. Indifference. Everyone working here is indifferent. The buffet was very disappointing. I went knowing that the buffet theme was "backyard barbecue" so I was expecting like pulled pork brisket maybe some bbq chicken typical barbecue stuff. When I arrived I was surprised to see the only thing barbecue related was bbq chicken wings and ribs or I should say rib bones due to the fact they no meat on them what so ever other items included hamburgers and hotdogs very dry fried chicken and some kind of fish and rice I had to use one of the small plates for salad for my meal because the staff stated they already put plates out once and they wasn't doing it again the restaurant was extremely hot and uncomfortable and our server didn't keep up with checking in took our order and came back once to give me the bill not a good experience at all do better Shoney's read more

I haven't eaten at Shoney's for over a decade and excited when I found a Shoney's near Flatwoods! I stopped in on a Sunday at Noon and it wasn't overly crowded yet. The breakfast/lunch bar was very well stocked, but I ordered a turkey club and onion rings. The waitress arrived quickly and friendly - she took my order, brought my coffee and continued at other tables. She laughed and joked with her regulars and neighbors. I love WV and the family-friendly restaurants where everyone knows everyone! The food arrived fast, hot and tasty. On the way out, they had a lovely little WV souvenier shop of hoodies, stickers, key rings, etc. The bathrooms were serviced and clean. The restaurant is in the Flatwoods parking area so you have several stores to stop at - WV Merchandise, Leggs, Fiesta stoneware, Walmart is next door, etc. I highly recommend you stop in and enjoy a meal. read more

We recently road-tripped our way as a fam' from Buffalo NY down to this area of WV for no better reason than to visit a place we had not been together. We stayed in Bridgeport WV, and one day our adventure'ing brought us about an hour from there to Flatwoods. We came to take in some cryptid lore at the nearby Flatwoods Monster Museum and WV Big Foot Museum, (both wonderful free museums!). Hungry from all of our monster hunting, we stumbled on Shoney's for dinner, a chain we are unfamiliar with in the northeast. Shoney's reminded me of a Ponderosa merged with a Big Boy. It is a casual diner-style restaurant with a decent sized AYCE buffet. When we stopped in, the buffet was really the only option, as we were told by the kind waitress that they were understaffed and not running the full menu. This was fine by us, as the buffet had plenty of hot and hearty options. There was a large salad bar with a lot of variety, plus several hot entree options. I am vegetarian so stuck to the salad, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, and rolls and bread sticks, definitely a carbo-load splurge. My favorite item oddly enough was the bread sticks--they were so warm, soft, doughy, and a little sweet, almost like fair food. Good thing we were on vacation and nobody knows me there, because I definitely ate more bread sticks than I care to admit, ha! For meat eaters, they did have meat loaf, broiled fish, fried chicken, and meaty soups. To top it off, there was a dessert bar with some cake options, mousse, and jello. On the way out, Shoney's has a gift shop area. I finally found some magnets I liked to bring home as souvenirs to my fam' that said "Country Roads, Take Me Home". I was so enamored with Shoney's that my sweet husband actually bought me a Shoney's tee on the way out too, so I could remember Shoney's always, hahaha. For an AYCE buffet, Shoney's was clean, comfortable, reasonably priced (about $13pp, half off for our son under 12), with sweet and friendly service, and a good selection of WV souvenirs should you need them. In our future travels, should we come upon this or another Shoney's someday, I'll gladly stop again to gorge myself at the buffet; after all, you should only eat like you are on vacation when you are actually on vacation! :-) read more

I left these guys a one star review several years ago (pre-COVID) and, since I've been back a few times after they reopened following COVID, I don't think the one star is fair anymore. They don't do a menu anymore, they stick to the buffet, and what that effectively means is, the food on the buffet is much more often hot, fresh, and well tended. It's still the Usual Shoney's Food, but that's not so bad when it's at its best. You know what you're getting, and you get as much of it as you can cram down your throat. They still have a really crappy dessert bar (way crappier than other Shoney's I've been to). Actually it's worse since they no longer have soft serve ice cream, which was their "best" dessert. Also, afaik the thing about the wait staff getting punished if they can't upsell you drinks is still true. But all in all, things improved. read more

Depends on what you get. They do buffet almost exclusively. Some things are excellent. The fried chicken is almost always really tasty, crispy, and hot. Ham and pineapple is good. Brown beans and cornbread are usually good. Prime Rib on Friday is decent, but doesn't blow you away. I've always liked their breakfast bar, though. It's tasty...the sausage rice in particular, but the bacon, sausage, and everything else just hits the spot. The breaded shrimp are usually good. The salad portion of the bar is usually fresh. Some other things, like the mashed potatoes and gravy, are typical of what you get on a buffet. Macaroni salad can be good at times. Meatloaf can be positively delicious or meh. The mac and cheese is cafeteria grade. But, it has a strange attraction in a "grade school lunch" sort of way. Make sense? Green beans are usually pretty bland...need salt and some sort of fat, be it butter, bacon grease, etc. Chili ranges from super tasty to just raising questions...is that cinnamon I taste? Some people like that. I prefer to save it for apple pie. Speaking of sweets, desserts aren't worth the trouble most of the time. Mostly cakes and usually pretty dry. I can almost always find something that I like here, but sometimes that means trying some things that I don't particularly care for. The cottage cheese was sour, told them so they brought out a refill evidently from the same container, the ice cream machine didn't work as well. To top it off, I have an online coupon FROM SHONEYS.COM for a choice of free drinks or a ten percent discount for seniors. They wouldn't honor it because they no longer have a KIOSK!?? So, got $00.50 off of over a $25.00 meal!!!! My family and I have been stopping at this Shoney's for breakfast for many, many years. We've seen the place improve from Summer-to-Summer and this years trip was no exception. The breakfast fare is always good with lots of choices - this year particularly so. Service has always been efficient and friendly and the place has been improved with some TVs to look at. It's been YEARS since i have been to a Shoney's! We got off the exit, seen the Shoney's sign, and that was it. My oldest child has never been, but i told him to trust me. I was so glad i wasn't proven wrong. The restaurants ambiance is, of course, different then it was in the mid to late 90's. This Shoney's was an updated one. They have a gift shop as you walk in, TY beanie babies and little toys, sweaters and such. We were seated right next to the buffet. So of course, we order the buffet. It was in a square shape. From breakfast, to salad/toppings, to fried chicken, gravy, collard greens, and pie! So much and so little time and room! My child, "mom. You proved me wrong! Shoney's is awesome!" So, for an ole chain, it's not bad. We all left very satisfied. The price wasn't bad either. Kids under 4 eat the buffet free, under 10 it's 4.99. So for a family of 4 $25 for lunch is not bad at all, especially for everything we got! read more

Stopped here 2 weeks ago was very disappointed this time. It has been good in the past but this time it was not. We got the hot bar and salad the corn was just awful the mashed potatoes evidently had sour cream mixed in them instead of butter which makes them taste utterly disgusting. I thought Shoney's had started having the breakfast bar out all day not today of course the chicken was good it was cooked it tasted good the salad bar there wasn't much to choose from. If you're a vegetarian then you've got to have salad bar you need stuff on the salad bar all kinds of vegetables that's what a vegetarian eats but not this place they had plenty of ham and pickled peppers the eggs we're just the whites there was no yellows what did they do with the yellow stand back there and eat them. Also is it too much to ask for you not to cook ham or bacon in the green beans? My father is a vegetarian so he is very limited on anything that he can get to eat in a restaurant because of this practice I'm not a vegetarian but I still I don't like ham or bacon cooked in my freaking green beans. Grossest place I've been to in a very long time. The windows were so filthy you could not see out of them. The bathroom was another level of gross. I had lunch today at Shoney's in Flatwoods. I am not impressed! I ordered the chicken breast meal with a baked potato and green beans with rolls. The rolls never arrived, one chicken breast was nowhere to be found and the one chicken breast I did get was so tough that I could not cut or chew it, the green beans tasted nothing like green beans and the potato came with no butter. The meal was bland, the dirt in my potato skin had more flavor than my entire meal. On the plus side, the server was nice and the iron skillet cookie was good. I believe this Shoney's in Flatwood, WV restaurant has thrown customer service out the window with the mop water. We visited this facility after a long drive from Pittsburgh Airport of which we had traveled from Florida. This was the last stop before arriving home from our annual beach trip. We gassed up the car and decided to eat some dinner before getting on the road. I had not visited a Shoney's restaurant in several years and after this experience I will probably never spend another minute in another one. We ordered our drinks and meals without issue. I ordered the Fish&Chips dinner. This is where it goes down hill quickly. When our meals arrived all seem to be in order with the exception of my Fish & Chip dinner was minus the chips. Thinking they would arrive on separate plate. However, they didn't. I looked at the waiter and ask where were my fries (chips). She sarcastically replied back, " They are called Fish and Chips but it's only Fish", you have to order the fries separately. She said she would go back and have them prepared at a cost. I told her to forget about it. My problems is, why would you have an entree on the menu called Fish & Chips but in reality it's only Fish. At this time she slammed the bill on the table and never returned. No beverage refills, she never ask if we wanted desert. NOTHING!!! I left NO tip and when we payed our bill at the counter the cashier ask if we wanted to leave a tip on the receipt and we said no and explained the poor customer service deserved no tip. She proceeded to make excuses for the poor behavior as if I wanted to hear this....NO THANKS!!!!! I'll spend my money elsewhere... Some place that knows what customer service is all about. read more
