I have been to El Gallo before when in the area and the food is a solid choice. This time I chose to try the quesabirria's (on corn tortillas) along with the cheese dip for the chips. Food was plenty for leftovers and service was pleasant. Food came out pretty quick. The inside is styled as a traditional Mexican restaurant. Great selection. Service was appropriately expeditious. Chips and salsa were good. Food was served HOT and was delicious. Shredded beef chimichangas, beans and rice were tasty. Terrific food and service! ACP comes as a generous portion of chicken, rice and a white sauce along with tortillas. The El Parradillo (sp?) is essentially large portions of all the best meats on menu served fajita style (sizzling platter) with lettuce, cheese, beans, rice and sour cream on the side. The churros can be ordered strawberry sauce on the side. Be thirsty when you order a beverage here: water, tea, soda are all available in large (!!) cups. Oops! Almost forgot the chips and salsa delivered to the table/ chips were warm and crispy: the salsa comes in a small pitcher so each person can pour into their own bowl and customize if desired. I absolutely love Mexican cuisine. I have had it all over Central America, West Coast to East Coast, McAllen, TX to Deluth, Neah Bay, WA to Tampa, FL. Never have I had to push the plate away and leave it. NEVER. Yes I paid my $23.00 bill. Yes I left a 40% gratuity. The service was great. Very friendly people and a very nice Hostess. We went for lunch 9/8/2025 and I wish we would have went elsewhere. Placed our order and told the waiter absolutely no beans and there was beans all over my plate! He said I can replate it it's still have the runny beans everywhere. Tried to cut my chicken ( the chicken was white like it was just boiled) it was so tough I couldn't eat it. And this was after waiting 45 minutes . The waiter passed by our table 3 times and never once stopped to check on yes and it was not busy! When he did finally check he clearly seen my food was untouched and on the end of the table he had the nerve to tell me I will see if they will take it off your bill! I politely told him they will take it off because I was not paying for it. I should've known there was no prices on any of the menu items. It took forever for the food. This place won't last long. The lady next to us ordered a well done steak and it come out with blood everywhere and it took them forever to come back and check on that table. Eh.... Not bad a deal per dollar. It's cheap Mexican food. If I lived in this small town I would probably think pretty highly of the place, but just passing through it didn't do much for me. There were only 3 other tables occupied, so I got pretty immediate attention. But not much attention after I ordered. It wasn't bad service, but it wasn't good service. Then I'm not quite sure what ended up leaving a "bad taste in my mouth". Was it that they didn't tell me they were going to sloppy ground beef in all of my entrees? Or was it was it the group of hammered locals giving me funny looks? I think it may have been the fact that one of the employees decided that it would be a good idea to sit right behind me and aggressively clean the menus. So hard in fact it was moving my seat over and over again. Just a lack of common decency in my opinion. I visited here with a few coworkers and my father while we were in the area for work. It. Is. Fast. From table to order to check on our visit we were in and out within 30 minutes one night. It was crazy how fast the food gets to table. Amazing. I ordered the fajitas and chimichangas on two separate visits. Both of them tasted great. Pulled over randomly for gas heading to Maryland. I've had Mexican food all over the country. This was BY FAR some of the most delicious authentic Mexican food I've ever had. The chips and salsa were perfect in every way. The guacamole was on point! I got 3x shredded pork enchiladas with the salad and my wife got the fajitas. Everything was cooked to perfection with loads of flavor! It was actually one of the best dishes I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant. Much respect to these folks, they're doing everything right! Hear me out. I'm from TEXAS. We stopped in here ironically. There was literally nothing else anyway, anywhere near here. Texans have the best Mexican food in USA, significantly better than Southern California. I've been to Mexico many times, as well as all over Central America. And I'm not talking about Cancun and resort towns. We walked in, sat down, the staff called us señior/ señiorita, Herman's etc. so cute. We wanted to make fun of midwestern or Appalachian Mexican food. I told the staff that we were from Texas and we wanted some SPICE AND FLAVOR. Basically nothing on the menu consists of that, because of the people up here went from eating their chips and queso and got the kind of food they actually have south of the border, everyone's gut biomes would explode and cause mass hysteria amongst the moonshiners and Hilltoppers. If you are passing through or a local, you should know that this state, is something beautiful to be proud of and never stop admiring. You should also know that this Mexican food joint is pretty good! I got a chipotle pollo plate and my date got Carne asada. The flavors were outstanding. The spice level is very bland. The chipotle was as spicy has a cheese puff. The rice and chicken were fresh. The salsa was very.. flavorful. And the staff was very attentive and accommodating. Let's talk about the accommodations made. They acknowledged we are Texans and love spicy, they brought out a bowl of some dark red salsa and just seemed real proud of it. BY GOLLY it was spicy and flavorful! I threw it on everything and it made the meal so much more authentic. If you're a Texan, or someone from SOCAL/ Central America, just go in with an open mind and ask for the spicy salsa. If you're a local or other yankee (anyone who lives north of Dallas) then try a nibble of the spicy salsa. Warm yourself up to authenticity. It was very different than what we are used to from selection to preparation to presentation to taste, but they outdid themselves and earned a high rating. read more

My mom had the Enchiladas Mole which she loved because they were slightly sweet. I had Shrimp Fajitas for One and they were ok. Rice and beans lack seasoning/flavor. Strawberry margarita was not good but the regular margarita was great. Our server Erica was the best and sweetest. She did everything perfect. read more

I'm partial to a Mexican restaurant around where I live, and I'm overly critical otherwise. Flatwoods is such a small town that I wasn't expecting much from El Gallo - but it was some of the best food I've ever eaten! I wish it were closer to home! The folks I went with ordered a pitcher of margaritas, which was bigger than I'm used to (and soooo good). After the food arrived and we took a few bites, the whole table complimented the food. I got the enchiladas rancheras, and I'm so glad I did. It was three cheese enchiladas with pork and the most amazing, savory sauce on top! It was also smothered in queso, which is fine by me. Of all of the Mexican restaurants I've been to, I've never seen this particular dish (which is a shame). I might be back for more before my trip to Flatwoods is over! Definitely recommend this place! I've been coming here for a couple years since I wrote the last review, and I would love to give them five stars. The consistency of the food has improved greatly since then. The prices have gone up a tad due to the pandemic, but that's not something I'm going to dock them points for. Their food... is not gourmet. They serve cookin'. They serve grub. It's not one of those kinds of places where the meat is gently seasoned and stewed for five hours to bring out its natural flavors, it's chewy, salty grilled meat served in large portions underneath cheese dip. It's just not five star food - but as a neighborhood Mexican joint in the boondocks I'm extremely happy to have these guys around. The big thing you have to know about this place is that when they say 'cheese', they mean cheese dip. Even the quesadillas are made with cheese dip instead of cheese. Exploring the dark corners of the menu can be a bit iffy - one time I ordered a potato burrito and got boiled french fries wrapped in a burrito shell. And that's everything bad I have to say about them. On to the good stuff. The chips they bring out to the table often feel like they came straight out of a toaster - warm and light and crumbly. The salsa's homemade, it's usually just a little bit different visit to visit (one time it'll be a little extra spicy, another time it'll be heavy on the onion, a third time it'll be mild and tomato-y, etc...). The seasoning mixes they use tend to be heavy on the salt, but a buddy of mine likes to get the Cancun Special (grilled shrimp and tilapia) with "light seasoning" and they nail it for him each time. And the cheese dip? Look I'd love to get a quesadilla with real cheese, but as far as cheese dip goes it's very good cheese dip. Fajitas and meat dishes are usually done as small heavily seasoned strips of meat cooked well done. They have a lighter touch on the seafood dishes though - no dried out shrimp here. The wait staff is great. Granted, me and my buddies are in there at least once every other week or so, but they recognize us, great us with smiles, and keep our chip baskets and drinks refilled. read more

My wife and I stopped here on our drive from Atlanta to Pittsburgh. The staff were excellent. They all wore masks the entire time we were in the restaurant. Unfortunately, clientele weren't as concerned including two state troopers that walked in without masks. Food was excellent. As good as any Mexican restaurant in Atlanta. Stopped here on a trip through WV. This is an above average, small town Mexican restaurant with good quality, fresh ingredients. Great flavors and perfectly spicy. Definitely recommend! We tried: tacos de asada, carnitas, and the burrito azteca. All was delicious, including the chips and Salsa! It doesn't compare with a big city cantina like Papasitos in Texas, but it is likely one of the better places to eat in Flatwoods, WV. Wait staff was very attentive. I'll preface this by saying I live in the southwestern United States, with access to amazing Mexican restaurants. I also make my own tamales from scratch. The mole sauce rates up there with anything I could get in Las Vegas. I was concerned when I inquired about what kind of tamales they had, and was told "the regular kind," but my fears were put to rest with a large pork tamale in red chile sauce appeared. It was served enchilada style, smothered in sauce and cheese. The arroz con pollo was tasty too. Was this the best Mexican food I've ever eaten? Overall- no. In WV? Most definitely. I never imagined being able to have chilaquiles and a Dos Equis on draft anywhere in Braxton County. read more
