They seemed very busy with takeout orders and lunch rush but still made sure to get to us, we were in no rush since we were catching up. Peter was our chef and we had an amazing time. I find that sometimes places will overcompensate with adding different touches when it's not necessary. I would have liked if the course ended with tomago since thats what I am used to at more traditional places. We received complimentary cheesecake at the end one matcha and one yuzu. If you had to pick, I would definitely opt for the Matcha! - Ambiance: The vibe was casual, I felt like they welcomed you as you are. No need to dress up, the focus is on the food. I did appreciate the chef made people waitlist so his attention could focused on my party of 4, this was a nice touch. - Service: We love the two chefs that were there, they explained each fish and put on a show when they brought out the smoke!! The waitress was amazing and hilarious she always made sure that the sake didn't stop coming! I would like to note that making a reservation is 100% the way to go so you don't get turned away and so the chefs are prepared for you. I had been hearing and seeing some great things about this place, especially on Yelp, and decided I wanted to give them a try. Work had been crazy and I decided to order from here online for a quick lunch option. My order was ready on time. The packaging was remarkable--sharp, functional, and well-branded. The food was amazing! I ordered the Premium Omakase Bento Box. I really enjoyed the Nigiri sushi. The box was quite large, so I had some leftovers in the fridge that my oldest enjoyed as well. The only bummer is I'm not exactly sure what I ate lol. I wish it'd come with a breakdown or "road map" if you will, so I could potentially get it again, as I think these boxes are all put together with the chef's preference. That's probably info that's more readily available when you dine in, so I'll have to do that sometime soon. read more

We stopped by Shokunin which is located inside City Market food hall to try out their omakase. They have 2 different omakase choices, 10pc Basic omakase at $70 and 13pc Premium omakase at $85. We all went with the Premium omakase. Personally I thought It was just average and little disappointing for one piece of fish that they actually served and its part of the Premium omakase. Here are a few highlights. Blue Fin Tuna, Chutoro Toro, Sea Bream Nigiri and the blue crab HR to end the meal. The rest I wouldn't call it premium sushi. Salmon Belly Yellowtail Belly Albacore with Chili Oil Hotate Carpaccio Halibut Unagi Kanpachi Engawa ( Halibut Fin) which was served sashimi still and overly sauce. Would have been better as a nigiri. Escolar -This was the worst one. I have never seen Escolar served in any omakase until now. Here they call it ono, it's very misleading if you don't know you fish. Other would call it white tuna. It's one of the cheapest, flavorless fish and they serve this in their Premium omakase. There's noting premium about this fish and it should be in any omakase. No - Uni, Ikura, Toro or any of the Mackerel family in the Premium Omakase. Either one of these or mackerel would have been better than the Escolar. There fish to rice ratio was fine. The rice was Inconsistent, little mushy at times and needed more seasoning. Served was fantastic and friendly. All do considered for the area it's at you're not going to find another decent omakase place around for miles. read more

Located in Haven Market which is a food plaza with tons of other restaurants and plenty of seating everywhere. Plenty of parking in the lot. Shokunin is located near the back and features an intimate sushi counter, blocked off from the rest of the market with a partial wall. Interior is very Japanese/wooden themed. I went on a weekday and ordered pickup, but it wasn't busy. My order took ~20min which I think is reasonable   -premium omakase bento(5/5): I havent gotten too many sushi bento boxes, but this would have to be my top. THe box is very aesthetically packaged, with chopsticks, ginger, wasabi, ponzu, and soy sauce. You get a great variety of nigiri, my favorites were the escolar and toro. I typically dont care much for handrolls because they usually just taste like rice, but these were pretty large pieces with huge cuts of fish. I could actually taste the crab because of how much was in each piece. -miso soup (2/5): surprisingly bland, it came with a side of deydrated veggies and im assuming dashi powder to mix with the soup   Overall very fresh fish, a GREAT fish to rice ratio, and good pricing given the quality of what you get. Made another visit. Was yearning for that intimate experience, along with some fresh sushi! I ordered the premium omakase and had it with some water. Apparently, along with the soju, they have some cocktails too. Walking up to the small shop, got a few moments to look over the menu. Two different menus, depending on if youre dining-in or dining-out. Host came from the back room, cleaned our seats, and provided drinks. It still has a bit of a cluttered feel, particularly around the soda fountain area. They use those plastic tumblers with a ribbed texture but i think glass cups would elevate the experience cause they just remind me of Dennys water cups. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience. The premium omakase entails a roll chosen by the omakase chef, made in front of you, and described to you. I honestly cant remember all 13 rolls and dont want to give misinformation. Theyre gathered in a collage photo. But i really liked the eggs drop soup. I still wish there was a clearer view of the sushi chef making the rolls. It was blocked by random items, like glove boxes. I did get to watch the other chef. If you want to have some great sushi, in a place that isn't crowded, this spot is ideal. And you can always get dessert from one of the nearby vendors. read more

I always receive get service here (from a particular sushi chef) and the sushi is always great quality. I decided to take my boyfriend here for his first omakase experience. At the end of our dinner, he was fully satisfied and enjoyed the service and food. I always request a particular sushi chef - Peter - because he delivers excellent service and is knowledgeable about the sushi he is serving. Every other time I come here and and seated with a different, service isn't so great. As I mentioned I've been here plenty of times, so Peter was very helpful when serving my boyfriend. Explaining the fish, what's in/on it, the origin of where is came from. I come here because you can taste the quality in the fish. I have been coming to this place since it opened pretty much and finally doing a review. Tucked inside the Haven City Market this is a gem of fresh fish, great service and tasty delights. Perfect beer selection, soju and sake as well as perfectly described omakase! The seating is small but enough for about 20, music from the surrounding areas and the chefs are friendly. The two sisters make the experience even better with being attentive and lively. Shokunin is a hiddin gem. My bf was recommended by a friend so we came here to eat. We both got the 13 course omakase. Everything was so well prepared. The fish was so fresh and the flavors were immaculate. Each nigiri had it's own special taste to it. The fish melts in your mouth and leaves you wanting more. The chef was so sweet too and explained the things that we were eating. The only downside of this restaurant was that it's inside of Haven City Market. It was so loud so the experience didn't feel like a true omakase experience. Thank goodness, they put us towards the back side so we can still eat and have a converation. I was at Haven City Rancho Cucamonga to pick up dinner for both my daughters. I walked past Shokunin so many times, but never once went inside. I finally took the opportunity to try them out. Dine-in is for a specific dining experience. Take-out is done on the outside of the restaurant front. The young lady who took my order was very pleasant. Please note they are cashless. Well, I ended up getting two sushi rolls, Rainbow Roll and Fiesta Salmon Roll. Both were so very delicious. Sushi rice was soft. Fish was fresh and succulent. Rolls were above average size. Prices are a bit higher than most sushi places. I would return here to try their other rolls like Shokunin Roll and Haven Roll. I may even dine-in just to experience it. I can't believe someone had the audacity to actually put this together and not be embarrassed .... 1 hand roll was full of just imitation crab meat, 1 was full of only spicy imitation crab meat, and one had ground spicy tuna. My family booked a reservation for dinner and they had the seats already reserved at the sushi bar. Cute seating for such a small space. It's a bit rowdy though since it's inside Haven City Market. Phone service in the building is a bit shoddy but you can connect to the WiFi code they provide you at the table so that you can scan the QR code for the menu. We ordered the 13 piece omakase. I went here to get the 13 item omakase and it is genuinely the best sushi I have ever had in the IE, which is saying something because I've lived here for 30 years of my life and been eating sushi in this area for 20 of those years. Came here for the first time due to the yelp review score but boy was that wrong. First i was met by a hostess that said she needed to explain the menu and ordering process. I asked her what would be in the omakase and her response was " I think" there's .... And i asked her if the fish was fresh. She said all the fish was fresh and not frozen. ( sure tasted frozen to me) the service was slow and inattentive. The miso soup was hot water with a slight hint of miso and she put lots of onion not scallion in the soup. The total was over $130.00 where if i had gone to my favorite place it would have been less and ordered more great fish from japan. It's $19 something for the roll; it was not busy when I ordered but it takes a good 20 mins for the roll to be ready. The roll tastes great and the salmon is fresh. read more

I feel bad for saying this because I was so hopeful, but I think this place is a little overhyped. To preface - I am absolutely one to splurge on a good Omakase if it's worth it. I may be a little bit pickier having lived in SF for the past few years and frequenting a lot of sushi bars up there, but I recently moved back to my hometown and have been on the hunt for sushi in the IE that hits. The ambiance itself is actually really nice. I like the intimate sushi bar experience and I think they capture that well despite it being inside of Haven City. I did a chefs choice nigiri which was 8 pieces and $35, not horrible pricing for a chefs choice. I'm gonna be honest, I was a little disappointed in the nigiri. Some of them tasted like it had been sitting out for a bit. And not as high quality as I would've hoped for some of the nigiri. Something about the rice texture was a little off too - a bit too grainy for nigiri imo. The chef also forgot to tell me what each of the fish was so I had to call her over and ask. Not that big of a deal, but you don't know what you're getting when you order a chefs choice so it's good to know what you're about to eat. I did come on a slower day, so that definitely could've affected it since they probably weren't putting out fresh rice as often as they might when it's busier? I'm willing to give it another shot tho and hopefully change my mind - maybe try their takeout or come back on a busier day. read more

I got the premium omakase course and I would say that if it was based on taste alone, the meal would easily get 5 stars. Each piece was given its full attention and I appreciated all the various flavors that were imparted in unique ways from aging to smoking. However, unfortunately due to the restaurant being confined in a food court, the atmosphere takes a serious hit. While the little cubby itself is cozy and intimate, it's hard not to notice the blaring music and foot traffic happening outside. I wish there was a little more separation from Haven City Market. Also the service I hoped would be more interactive. The sushi chef only really meekly announced the ingredients and rarely interacted with us hungry eaters. Maybe it's just me, but I think half the fun of good omakase is the performance, interaction, and connection you make with who's making the food in front of you. read more

Great sushi spot located inside Haven City Market. I know Haven City Market has a lot of great food options, but I didn't know what to expect from a sushi place inside. They have dine-in and take-out options. The dine-in option includes a la carte nigiri and sashimi options plus their omakase. The rolls are take out only. They do have other sets like the nigiri set I ordered and omakase bento boxes. I'm not sure what the difference is between everything. The inside looks like a cute little bar area, but I opted for the take-out option since rolls were take-out only. The server was good about explaining everything. You can obviously eat the take-out around Haven City Market. Like I mentioned earlier, I ordered a nigiri set and also a roll. The roll was pretty good, but I was really surprised by how good the nigiri set was for take-out sushi. Now I'm intrigued by their omakase, would definitely want to try. Super disappointed with my visit to Shokunin. I was really looking forward to trying the sushi bombs I saw all over their Instagram and TikTok--they looked amazing online. But in person, it just didn't live up to the hype. I placed my order at 8:00 PM for three sushi bombs/inari and didn't get my food until 8:50 PM. Nearly an hour wait for something that should've been quick. I didn't even complain--I just went up to ask for a water refill since it was really hot inside. That's when they finally apologized for the delay. I mentioned that I saw two people who ordered after me get their food before me, and the guy said it was because another customer had a big order. That didn't really make sense--why would that delay mine if I ordered first? He apologized again and offered an extra sauce for free, which honestly didn't make up for the wait. What made it worse was that it wasn't even busy. Just one person waiting and two people inside. Meanwhile, the cashier and one of the staff were just chatting and laughing while I sat there waiting. At one point, someone sitting near me actually asked if the food was good and mentioned they noticed how long I had been waiting--especially since my friend, who ordered at the same time, had already gotten their food way earlier. By the time my food finally came out, I honestly wasn't even hungry anymore. I still gave it a try, but the presentation looked rushed. Overall, not worth the wait. read more

Place with small took a little while for me to find because it was my first time at Haven city market. I came for the five year where it was 13 courses for $55 Omakase. I'm coming from Orange County so I didn't realize how far this was and how much traffic there would be. I was about 10 to 15 minutes late, but I called and they said that was fine. The chef prepared all the pieces that I was behind when I got there so I could have them at once as he continued to prep prepare throughout. The quality and flavors were good. The portions were small. I don't know if it was because of the anniversary special and pricing or if that's what their regular portions are like. The size of the fish felt like you were going to all you can eat place where they give you smaller portions. I understand why they do that at all you can eat I can expect it but here I was surprised that it was so small. I've never been to a restaurant. The portion is the small again maybe due to the reduced cost for the anniversary. The service was good. I did not like that. There were fly traps in front of my face at high-level to where I was sitting. I understand the purpose. I understand why they have it as empty as it was I shouldn't have been sat in front of very appetizing. I might go again if I'm ever in the area to see if that really is the portion size but this is way too far of a drive for me to drive close to 50 miles. I'm glad I experienced it though.
