Love Shogun usually love to go there on NYE well after a few years of not going we decided to go this year. Big Mistake I called 2 days ahead made reservations for 7p they said no problem. We arrived at 640p open the front door and saw a mob of people. This didnt bother me i was smart and made reservations.... WRONG. I get to the hostess and they say they are running a little behind on the reservations I said ok how long? And she replies a hour. I said a hour? So a break the bad news to my party and we wait and more and more people are coming in. You cant move way to many people way over capacity I start planning in my head look il ng for exits or windows in case something bad happens yes it was that crowded. So we finally get seated a short 2 hours and 20 min late at 920. We sat down and was basically rushed out my buddy was still eating and the waitress asked to box the food up. As for the food it was up to ShoGun par it was a bit off. As I walk out I say Shogun? I'd rather Show a gun to my head than come here on NYE again. To add to the story I started to not feel well on the way home and no word of a lie spent the first moments of 2019 on the toilet. I knew the food was off. For 3 days following I couldnt stop Butt Blasting the bathroom it was literally a 3 day "Shitstorm" I had never seen anything like it since Steve O butt chugged a beer in the jack ass movie... On the bright side me pouring out fluids and not eating helped me get a jumpstart on my new years resolution of losing weight. New year New me I guess. read more

Completely underwhelming... Right from the start one failed attempt after another. From the disappointing salad with soy sauce or teriyaki added to the traditional ginger dressing. Talk about a way to kill what should have been a crisp clean culinary experience. Than my dinner arrived, steak and shrimp Hibachi. The shrimp were tiny, basically not much more than salad shrimp. And the vegetables were 90% sprouts, missing a ton of the zucchini and squash you normally are served with Hibachi. The overall taste was lacking, it had a weird soy sauce & vinegar taste. Normally Hibachi has a extremely clean and pleasant teriyaki taste. And even worse, the cost was higher than far far better Hibachi establishments. $31 for a meal that sucked, no thanks... not again. I was so very disappointed in this restaurant. We went to celebrate my son's girlfriend's birthday and it was awful. First off, we had reservations for eight o'clock, but they didn't seat us until nearly nine. Then I ordered the Crab Rangoon and half of them were empty. Also, because we had small children with us, I was distracted, and every time I turned back to my food, a plate of something had been removed by the server. I was disappointed with this one. I'm a fan of the south county Shogun (off route 1 in Wakefield) and gave this one a whirl since I happened to be driving by Jefferson Blvd. The food is fresh, no question. The service was terrible. First, they got my sushi order wrong. It's not that difficult to server customers sushi : they have a long piece of paper where you check the rolls/sushi you want and hand it back to them to make. Plain and simple, right? Instead of getting my normal order of salmon sushi, they gave me salmon roe .. which, for the connoisseurs, is a BIG difference. I mean : it's either a piece of salmon fish, or hundreds of salmon eggs in a roll. Most people have a hard time with the roe, so when I mentioned this, the waitress looked at me blankly and said "the chef will not take sushi back". No apologies, even when she came to show me I was wrong and realized that... nope, I had indeed checked off the correct order of fish. Paper in hand, she walked away disgruntled. At this point, I figured a few creatures had died for what was on my plate and trying new things wouldn't kill me. $30 later and no closer to ordering that again. She then proceeded to spill my cosmo on the sushi bar, leave it half empty and walk away. Dropped the check off the second I finished my last piece of sushi, and mumbled the whole way back to the register. 2 stars for the food because honestly, the fish deserve it. You pay 35-40 dollars for a plate that is only going to come with white rice, veggies and a 2 bonus shrimp - to add fried rice and noddles you get up charged!!! Beyond crazy and a rip off!! The food at Shogun is beyond the valley of amazing! My friend introduced me to Shogun after I was a loyal fan of Oki's on Mineral Spring (parking lot is a death trap and the toliets in the mens room always overflow) She told me it would be better than Oki's and oh yeah it is First of all its not Death Race in the parking lot to find a space. There is plenty of parking. The secret to Shogun is to go during the week. I find that when you go on the weekends it is WAY overcrowded and you dont get the good customer service as they are being dragged in so many different directions. We have been going there for years and we always order the same thing. We order the steak and chicken, fried rice, and an order of garlic noodles (oh the garlic noodles are so good you swear you will see Jesus drive by in a Corvette) You start off with a soup that is basic broth and noodles (there is a picture of it on here). I think it is to build up for the meal. Then you get salad that has this KILLER ginger dressing on it. My friend isn't a salad fan so I get hers. The chef will come over and introduce himself to you and he cooks the food right in front of you. I would say about 95% of the chefs there are in good spirits and the people who seat the people are always pleasant. The bill for the two of us usually comes up to about $80 with drinks, but it is well worth it. A great place to take someone for a birthday, retirement, holiday, etc. You will love it! read more

My friend suggested shogun enough times that I finally went. The grill room was maybe 20 percent full, and it sounded like a Patriots home game. Kids screaming, spatulas clanging, and every ten minutes... Drums beating. I wanted hibachi, but it was too loud so I sat at the sushi bar. I still could not hear my Brother on the phone. My sushi - 8 pieces and a rainbow roll was $30. Tea was $3. I had a good, strong, hot bowl of miso soup. Then a salad with an extremely salty and tart dressing. Not the ginger dressing most places give you. My sushi wasn't bad. The fish was a little firm, which is odd, and it didn't taste of much. The mackerel tasted of too much, probably because the chef left the bloodline in. My waitress, sensing my displeasure, gave me a complimentary scoop of fried ice cream. It was a nice gesture but..... The breading tasted funny, and between that and the salad dressing, I was really put off from wanting to go back. I left $41 and think it was a lot for the experience. Yes, it's been a bit of a hectic Yelp dryspell but I have returned to lay the smackdown on my #1 food group and eventual cause of death by food coma - sushi. Enter Shogun: A name synonymous with hibachi and japanese cuisine in likely any state you scour. This particular Shogun you ask? Why certainly! In a nutshell: 'sarrite. The Hibachi side of things is pretty standard from what I remember, albeit it has been quite a few moons since I've been on this side of this restaurant. The sushi is really more of a rolled rice ball with fish fragments that seemingly fell into the mix. Seriously, the carb to fish ratio was way out of whack. But, I have had far worse sushi and may be spoiled from too many binge sessions at Sakura on Wickenden. Unfortunately, the real downfall that brings about the 3-star rating here is emptiness of my wallet after a quick bite. 3 Maki rolls (the largely rice ones) will run you a tab of roughly $17-$18, on the extremely low end. A California roll is over $5, which is just a bit redonkulous in this humble sushi snob and poor 20-something's opinion. I'd be more understanding if it was something special, but this Jefferson Blvd. roadside hideaway may have a false sense of quality inflation here. However, service is always with a smile and promptly on-point. Despite my critical outlook, if the price point is no issue and you are looking for a decent Hibachi dinner without hitting Providence or South County (for all you Cranston - Warwick dwellers), Shogun will do the trick for now. read more

Shogun has always been one of our favorite restaurants. Went last week and it was so disappointing. We had a new chef, clearly didn't have the routine down, no problem we've seen it lots of time. The steak we ordered was half as thick as it used to be and 30% more expensive. The steak was overcooked and just poor quality steak. I'm sorry but for the price it's way to expensive to be terrible. I couldn't eat any of the steak, it was inedible. I'm sad to say I won't be going back anytime soon. So sad, I've been going here for over 20 years, since they were on Post Road in their old location. Oh, they don't have any Sushi chefs anymore either, what a huge disappointment. read more

I wish I could give one and a half stars. The waitresses gave me ample time to complain... and I didn't... and I got a couple things that were good. First off the scallions wrapped in beef were nommy...Then I had ordered a few pieces of sashimi. Had I done what I normally do I would have not finished my food... let alone have gotten to the only piece of food worth eating on plate. I always wonder how people don't like sushi and I think this is it. I ordered: Salmon, White Fish, Yellowtail, Fresh Water Eel and Scallop. The only thing worth eating there was the Salmon (which was epic delicious! How they could get that so right and everything else so wrong is beyond me...) The Next that was pretty much worth eating was the eel... but it was slightly over cooked. It still melted in my mouth mostly... but you know how sometimes you get it with sharp outside bits? Yeah that's because it's over cooked... and this one could've handled being taken out a bit sooner an those sharp bits kind of ruin it, even if it does still melt and taste good. (Even over cooked it can taste good... but if it hurts your mouth... uhm... there's a problem.) The rest was plain disgusting. I'm still pretty angry I ate it let alone PAID for it. I never understood why people said don't eat sushi at a hibachi place...Now I get it. PS- This is the first sushi joint I have eaten at in RI... but I've eaten sushi all over the country and this is by far one of the most expensive places I have eaten other than Minnesota... 10 years ago. I went to Shogun for my birthday in September with a group of friends. Had a great time. The wait staff was friendly, waiting for our table was comfortable as we had a few drinks at the sushi bar. Once we got to the Hibachi table we got to enjoy the festive atmosphere in the main dining area. Our Chef was very entertaining and skilled. The food was delicious. In addition to Hibachi I and two other friends had some Maki and those party members who weren't seafood lovers had an order or dumplings that they were raving about. Because it was my birthday I was properly embarrassed by my friend's- They had the staff sing me song (which included drums) and I received a birthday dessert. Shogun is just ehh for me. I wouldn't say it's especially good, but not especially bad. The chef was great, and very fun. I think it's a bit much that they charge you extra for fried rice on a Friday or Saturday, and the shrimp appetizer are a few mere pieces of chopped up shrimp. As a consumer I feel that I should go into a place any day of the week, and get the same experience. Also the soup and salad are very overly salty for me. Traditional hibachi salad has ginger dressing, not salty soy ginger dressing. I wouldn't really recommend it to any of my friends, not would I take my family. If you want a stellar hibachi experience I recommend Kon in East Greenwich. read more

Excellent dinner. It did take a long time for the cook to be ready but when he came to the table, he was very personable. I only had shrimp tempura and veggie fried rice but the food was well seasoned and of course hot. I was drinking whiskey and ginger and the drinks were still really carbonated so if you're trying to get drunk, it will come at a high price here. Overall a very good visit. It is my friends 26th birthday and we were so excited to celebrate her dinner. We had made reservations for 7pm, as soon as we walked in it was CHAOS. They told us our 7pm reservation was going to be move to 7:25pm because of a timing issue. We had to wait at the bar for an hour and a half to get seated, without any knowledge of when we were going to get seated. A lot of people in the similar situation were coming up to us telling us that they had been waiting for over an hour as well but were told by the owner that their drinks and apps would be FREE. We mentioned it to the owner when we asked for the 2nd time when we would be able to be seated and she proceeded to scream at us yelling "STOP IT". We were very taken back. We finally got to sit down at 9pm.. 2 hours after our reservation time. We get to the table and the stovetop is filthy (pictures listed below). I am writing this review while sitting at the table, so you can only imagine how bad this reservation is going. We couldn't wait to go to Yelp. Love this place! They have the best ginger sauce ever! I get the hibachi sword fish every time. It's a nice fresh fat cut of fish (not that skinny skimpy kind that other HIBACHI places have served me). Chefs are great and make a fun experiance, waitstaff always friendly! My children who are 2 college students went to enjoy hibachi. Upon entering the restaurant they were greeted by the hostess who gives a new meaning to rude. Thee food was less than adequate, and they ate very little. When they arrived home they told me the food was of poor quality and were charged 81.00. I called the restaurant and spoke to the asst manager, Tia, who has no clue about customer service. Today I called and spoke with the manager/ owner who was very accusatory stating the girls ate the food. I had the food in 2 containers and clearly it was not eaten. I went here last night with a large group from the RI Sushi Meetup. I ordered the Filet & Lobster Hibachi. The meat was cooked perfectly, though the lobster was overcooked - this is not unusual for ordering hot food along with sushi-lovers. Their sushi rice seemed slightly sweet, definitely sticky, and their service was amazing for a long list of orders from a complicated group who all needed their checks separated! Their miso soup seemed a combination of miso and mushroom, and the soup that came with the hibachi was the same but with crunchy onion thingies that were pretty delicious! Did I mention that they have 16 ounce mixed drinks? I got the Arigato, which had melon, pineapple and coconut and was wonderfully tasty! read more

Not bad flavorful. A little sloppy for a hibachi restaurant totally misses the point of Japanese hibachi however they do not claim to be Japanese hibachi. Let me just say I absolutely love this place! For starters the wait staff is amazingly nice and so welcoming. My fiancé and I have been coming here every other week (or so) for the last ~6 months and all the waitresses in the sushi area always remember us and bring us fried ice cream at the end of our meal (on the house)! I can only comment on the sushi because that's all we ever come here for, but I have been to probably 30-40 different restaurants and this is by far my favorite. Their speciality rolls are awesome and their traditional rolls are on par with most sushi places. My girl Jessica is legit the best waitress I've ever had the pleasure of being around! She is such a happy person she makes you want to be around her! As a side note the Sho gun in Wakefield, RI is just as nice! Super awesome staff and same great menu! Blows Benihana out of the water. My friend and i ate here before flying home to CA. Easily enough food fo 3 meals, and it is fantastic. Scallops and filet cooked perfectly. Both fried rice and garlic noodles, tasty. And the people watching... young guys wearing shirts without sleeves because they thought their muscles were too big to fit, with their perfectly manicured eyebrows. A sight! And our chef was thoroughly entertaining he definately had his fingers with fire on them, using them as a match to light the onion tower. the wait staff asked us 10 times "how was everything?"
