I have never been more disappointed. Made 6:30 reservations for a full party of 8 for a 7 year-olds birthday. We didn't get seated until 7:15 and watched the entire time as full tables were filled with fragmented parties of people who came in behind us. If I could give this place no stars I would. My boyfriend and I went here on Saturday. And our experience was horriable. Not only did the waitress mess up our order and and the people next to us but I sat there for 15 minutes waiting on my drink. Once I was done with it I sat there for 30 minutes until she came back around and i ordered another one which never came. When she gave us the bill and we gave her our card she came back with our cc and bill and said she needed to add on that drink. My boyfriend began to explain we no longer want the drink and are ready to go. She then began to argue with us and refused to take the drink back followed by a loud comment that she was then offended. After 5 minutes of this she took the drink back. However she had already caused a scene. Not once did we get loud or become disrespectful to her. On our way out we asked to see a manager and was told there was none and that one would call us on sunday . It is now monday and have still not heard from a manager!!! Resturants need to realize that their customer service does effect a customers experience . I will never go back there nor recommend this place to anyone read more

This is the place for the finest sushi in RI. If you're a fan of maki rolls I would highly recommend the fire cracker and the samurai. They are a bit expensive but enough for two people. We like the Unagi and the Boston here as well. I will add one negative. I've ordered drinks from the bar a few times now and they are below par. How hard is it to make a Manhattan properly and my wife drinks a lemon drop martini and she had been disappointed as well. So get take out and imbibe at home with a nice bottle of wine....the food is good!! read more

First time we came , it was outstanding. From the time we walked in, service and food. The chef was interactive and funny. The food was cooked to perfection. Second time, it wasn't very busy but yet there were big gaps in waiting from the soup, salad and the chef coming out to cook. I get it that stuff happens but no apology about the slowness. Chef was good , steak not cooked to what was asked but portions were better than first visit so that kind of made up for the wait. Overall , we will go back seeing we actually find this one to be the best since Oki's had closed. We tried others and none compared to Shogun. I had a great time here last night. I have been to both locations. I have a couple favorite cooks but last night we had a new guy. His skills weren't great but the food ended up tasting amazing. We split garlic noodles because he had never had them. Totally changed his life right there. It was a fun place for a date. I had steak. Cooked perfect with the best mushrooms. He had steak and scallops. I should add, I have honestly been to shogun probably 100 times. So this time didn't stand out as amazing. It was good. I didn't appreciate how quickly they tried to push us out. It was just the two of us and then another couple. They had other empty tables but they really rushed us. We were still trying to finish our drinks and they were putting the new plates out on the table. Overall, delicious. I'm bummed I left my left overs in his truck at the end of the night. First visit and last. Friday night slow service, we waited for awhile for soup tasted like dish water. They didnt start serving until 2 more couples came in much later to fill our table. Entree steak & shrimp $31 WHOA and doesn't include noodles or fried rice. $7 extra for both so I declined. Only cook with soy sauce and butter. No garlic or chili oil. BLAND! Had to douse it with 3 cups of ginger dressing for any flavor. read more

A restaurant like this needs to be experienced at least once just for the entertainment value. The chefs cook almost everything right there in front of you, while at the same time performing an array of different "tricks'. The food quality really depends on the chef you get. I've had experiences where the chef was very obviously new at the trade and not only was the entertainment lame but the food suffered as well. The garlic noodles were cold and everything else seemed overcooked and bland. However, if you get a chef that knows what he's doing you get a whole different experience. On a good night (with a good chef) the food is fabulous. I enjoy all of their hibachi selections as well as their garlic noodles (yum!). As far as sushi goes, I would skip it. I wouldn't say it's their strong point, there are plenty of other restaurants in the area that prepare and serve sushi much better. read more

Hubs and I stopped in for a quick pre-show meal on a Friday night. We sat in the bar area and our waitress was pleasantly attentive. They recently renovated the interior, which is a big improvement from what it used to look like. My only complaint would be that it's a bit too dim at the bar tables. Food-wise, we were pleased with what we ordered. The tempura appetizer was excellent, with large pieces of fresh veggies fried to the perfect crisp and not too greasy. We also had the spicy maki combo and Thai chicken wings. The sushi was good, but not as spicy as what we are accustomed to. Same with the wings. Next time, we will definitely try the hibachi because everyone seemed to be loving it! read more

We have come here frequently for years and have always had great experiences. However, we ordered takeout last night and were very disappointed. My boyfriends order of hibachi shrimp came with only 4 shrimp and the rest was a bunch of mushrooms. I have consistently raved about their pork gyoza, but last night it was completely falling apart and hardly even sealed. I also ordered the shrimp tempura, the batter was thick and half cooked. We called the restaurant to notify them and got brushed off. I am very disappointed with the food and the way it was handled, especially since we have spent anniversaries, birthdays, etc here for years and it has always been a place we enjoyed. I'm very disappointed in the way it was handled and I'm not sure if we will return now unfortunately. read more

I'll preface my updated review with this: I have been to Shogun on a fairly regular basis for the past two and a half years but I have never, ever come across the issues of service that other reviewers have mentioned. This could be due to the fact that I avoid this place during peak hours and because we tend to have no more than 5 or 6 for hibachi at a time, but at Shogun I haven't gone astray yet. It's also worth noting that the majority of these bad reviews seem to center on those who ordered sushi as a meal and not hibachi; I don't eat sushi so I can't vouch for Shogun on that front, but I've taken a few sushi lovers here and they haven't had an issue with wrong orders or bad quality to date. Though a good half hour drive separates me from Shogun, I always take the time to go here. Why? The food and drinks are a cut above the rest and it is the only hibachi restaurant I've been to that has delicious garlic noodles - and trust me, I have been to many hibachi places around Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and even in the Southern US. Yes, Shogun isn't as fancy looking inside or out as many other Japanese steakhouses but what really matters is the food is great, the drinks are strong (and cheap!), and the chefs are entertaining. I highly recommend requesting Soli (pronounced 'So Lee') as your hibachi chef because his slightly dry sense of humor combined with great cooking technique is always a hit with whomever I bring. If you're coming for hibachi, you can most definitely skip the appetizers as you'll be getting more food than you know what to do with. If you still insist that you need appetizers, I've never gone wrong with the Beef Negima Yaki (thin sliced beef wrapped around scallions with a teriyaki sauce) or the Gyoza (a pan friend pork filled dumpling with a deliciously sweet ginger teriyaki type sauce). If you fancy a strong mixed drink, you won't be disappointed with the $6 House Drink Specials - 16 ounces of strong alcohol blended with fruity juices. The Tai Pan is the crown jewel of all the drinks, but can be a bit heavy on the gin for my tastes. If you'd prefer something more fruity and less boozy in flavor then you won't go wrong with the Purple Orchid, Bonsai Tree, or Green Dragon. As far as the hibachi dinners go, you'll always get the following: a clear broth mushroom soup, ginger dressing salad, two appetizer shrimp (except if you order the Hibachi Vegetable entree), your main entree selection, a mix of grilled vegetables and either sticky white rice OR fried rice depending on the day you visit. If you're in the know, you'll order the Garlic Noodles - enough for 3 to 4 people to share, they're so good that my boyfriend and I alone split them and take home the rest of our meals as leftovers. With your dinner, you also get two sauces for dipping - one is brown and spicy, similar to a hot mustard you'd expect when ordering Chinese take out and the other is creamy and pink, a mix of garlic and ginger. I always request 'double ginger' (aka the pink sauce) when the chef is plating the sauces as I don't like spice very much but both sauces are delicious in their own right. If, after a few drinks, your meal, and possibly an appetizer you are STILL hungry, they have the hallmark fried ice cream for dessert. If we make it this far, my boyfriend and I have to split it. It is in between the size of a baseball and softball and comes with whipped cream, drizzled chocolate sauce, and a cherry on top. If you decide to listen to the few low star reviews here then you'll really be missing out on a great experience. I've seen the shows a bunch of times and admit that at this point I don't really go to be entertained, I go for the great hibachi. If you're a connoisseur of Japanese Steakhouses then this place merits a try, if only to see what you're missing out at other hibachi places where they don't have awesome garlic noodles or supremely orgasmic ginger sauce. read more

I ordered sushi to go, on the Warwick roll the salmon was chewy and for $15...most of the roll was rice. Not impressed. The miso was not traditional and was cold by the time I got it home. We came here for a early dinner before movie...went to their sushi bar for sushi. Had the Gyoza and tempura shrimp for appertizers. Shrimp tempura was OK but you only get two shrimp! The rest are all fillers i.e. veggie and sweet potatoe tempura! Gyoza was steamed...but they are open and soggy. For the main we order Spider Crab Roll, Rainbow roll and one other roll that I forgot the name of. The presentation was beautiful...however, the rolls are all too sweet and one was too spicy. The rice for the sushi rolls were too wet and soft..we had much better elsewhere in RI..this got to be the worst sushi place we have ever been to. read more

Shogun never disappoints. We went as a table of 8 on a Sunday at 5, we sat at a hibachi table for my fathers birthday. The waitress was very attentive with bringing our drinks and appetizers we had ordered (sushi rolls and tempura chicken). The chef was fun and entertaining with my 4 year old cheering him on and the food was cooked perfectly. I always know I'm having leftovers when coming here. They knew it was my fathers birthday and sent out complimentary fried ice cream. All and all a good dinner and time. read more

Best hibachi and sushi in RI that I've found. And believe me, I've looked. We probably go at least twice a month. Everything is very fresh - I've never gotten "fishy" tasting sushi here, it's always crisp and clean. The texture of the rice is great, with just the right amount of subtle vinegary-tang to it. Hibachi is always great, the fried rice always excellent. Not a huge fan of the garlic noodles, but they're all right. I've seen a couple service complaints in the reviews, but I've never had bad service here. Sure, they've made mistakes a couple times, but they've always been quite good about fixing the issue promptly. read more

Came Saturday night for habatchi with little wait. The host, wait staff, and habatchi chef were great. The exterior and interior of the restaurant was nice and simple and not overly extravagant as some of the other places. The habatchi was extremely entertaining and the food was phenomenal. Holy food coma. They feed you enough to last 3 meals! Probably because we ordered fried rice and garlic noodles though, next time we'll skip them. Our filet was overcooked, but otherwise dinner was delicious. However we felt rushed the whole time, they take stuff away while you're still eating it! And as soon as the "show" was over they started boxing up our food. How about letting us eat? One lady at our table was so mad, she complained that they took her soup away before she was done and when asked if she wanted something boxed she said "We're eating!" I have been eating Shogun since I was in utero, and I will probably be eating here until I die. This is my favorite restaurant for special occasions, and the food is delicious. The filet is always cooked perfectly, and the shrimp is amazing. The chefs are entertaining and friendly. I have tried many other hibachi places, but none compare to Shogun. They were able to seat us in 15 minutes on a very busy night without a reservation. Portions are pretty insane so a side of fried rice is certainly enough for two to share. Scallops and steak were perfectly cooked and the shrimp appetizer was delicious. Only downside was that the shrimp in our main course was a bit underseasoned. We decided to try the garlic noodles as they're highly spoken of but were not too impressed. Our chef also had a few unique tricks that made the experience very fun. Easily one of the worst sushi and hibachi spots my husband and I have ever been to, and we have traveled all 50 states! Expectations were at 4 stars, based on reviews, and we came out thinking we will never return, ever! We went there on a Thursday night, and this place was getting crowded. We opted to sit in the sushi section where it was less noisy, even though I wanted hibachi. My husband ended up ordering sushi, and it was nice we got to share the food. The sushi area got really noisy when several parties arrived waiting to get seated in the hibachi section, and it was overall not a pleasant dining experience. Typically, restaurants like these have separated sections (one of sushi and one for hibachi) for a reason. Now, let's get to the food: The sushi was disgusting, mainly because the sushi rice was prepared poorly. It was too thick for our liking. The sauces for the special rolls were frankly very bland, and the hibachi was gross! I did not even take the leftovers home (and I usually do). I ordered the noodles on the side, which was a mistake because they were the cheap kind too! We were really looking forward to some good Japanese food, but this place really caters to the rowdy Rhode Islanders who don't know what solid fresh sushi and good tasting Japanese is all about. Very disappointed. I am very sorry to report that this place is not what is seems to be...it's too hyped up by fellow Yelpers and for the price of sushi and hibachi, it is SO not worth it. If you're hungry and you want the best hibachi in town Shogun is definitely your place to go! Everytime I go there I get huge portions the wait staff is very friendly and the food is amazing! The simple salad with the ginger dressing is so good that I drink the dressing out of the bottom of the bowl when I'm done (embarrassing I know but true). My girlfriend and I love this place. When we go there usually get soli jr as a cook and he is funny as he is talented! Bruce is also one of our favorites. I would recommend the shrimp hibachi but I'm sure it's all good because everything I've ever tried there has been great! read more
