The plumber who arrived was nice enough, but unfortunately, he wasn't able to diagnose the problem on the spot. Did not hire since they asked for a consultation before giving an estimate, but never scheduled one. Of the four plumbing companies Yelp reached out to for me, all said an on-site consultation was necessary for a wax ring replacement estimate. Even though I marked it as non-urgent, two sent someone almost immediately that same day (a Wednesday) and the third scheduled an appointment for the next day (Thursday). Shogun was the only one that didn't ever offer an appointment (that is, a two-hour arrival window). They replied "Yea how about Friday???" and I said Friday afternoon would be acceptable if I didn't hire someone else first. Meanwhile, three competitors gave me two-hour arrival windows for the same day or next day, and one sent me a tracking link when the truck was on its way. The competitors all had people in the office to coordinate and communicate while the technicians are working. I didn't feel my communication over Yelp with Shogun's office was effective. Their only other message was in response to my question about why everyone requests an in-person consultation when "they can't see the wax ring or the flange without lifting the toilet. Once the toilet is lifted, the wax ring must be replaced, whether it was damaged or not, right?" They replied "Yes need to replace if you pull the toilet all the time". It was unclear whether that meant meant "move it frequently" or "replacement is required every time", but in case they misinterpreted my question. I clarified that the toilet had never been moved. (I've read that one advantage of wax-free rings is for cases where a toilet is going to be repositioned, which is not the case, so I wanted to make sure they didn't recommend that option based on a misunderstanding.) I got no further reply. No appointment window was confirmed by the time I accepted another company's estimate on Thursday. I notified Shogun and the others as a courtesy. Both of the others acknowledged, but Shogun not. The two terse messages I quoted were all I received from them. I assume this licensed plumbing company would have been qualified to do the job, but my interchange over Yelp gives me no confidence that they will schedule and keep appointments, or would have kept me informed about status, explained my options clearly, or provided a written estimate as the three others did. The other three Yelp connected me to all had office staff and used third-party IT apps to send estimates and even arrival information. read more

Our 1960s garage faucet was corroded and leaking, they were able to source a new faucet of the correct style and recreate the same legacy style washer connections. Perfect replacement matched the original style and connections keeping the job small and affordable. Went under the house to deal with a leaking grey water to main line connection. Braved the dust and some spiders to effect a good repair. Turns out the old cast-iron main line is corroded but he was able to make it work well enough that its no longer leaking and we can bridge it until we're ready to do the larger pipe job later. read more

I knew this job was not an "easy fix" so we called Danny at Shogun Plumbing. Danny took a look at the cast iron wall nipple, formulated a plan, and gave us fair prices and different contingency plans, from worst case scenario, to best case. I knew this was more than an "easy fix," (if that cast iron crumbles, forget about turning on the water to the entire house until it's repiped). We called Danny from Shogun, (he's local, his wife took the call and scheduled him in just a few hours). He diagnosed the problem, told us his game-plan, and gave us price points with possible contingency plans in a worst case scenario. Everything went great, he was able to braze a new pipe behind the cabinet wall + sheetrock wall and connect it to a new copper nipple. He even threw on a new faucet set that my mom had wanted.
