Crunchy Roll

I kinda made a little tradition of going to teppanyaki places when my kids were little to celebrate the end of the school year or promotions. The food is generally decent, but I don't go so much for the food, as I like the concept of a dinner and show for our celebration. So when my youngest had his 8th grade promotion, I found Shogun in La Verne that I made reservations for. I've been to the Pasadena location several times in the past so I am confident with their food and service. The La Verne location is in a big shopping plaza with plenty of parking. We arrived and were seated immediately. I guess our reservation time at 6:00 pm was early enough to avoid the crowds since there was hardly anyone there yet. FYI, there's a happy hour from 3:00 - 6:00 pm. Our server was great, he got us everything we needed and stopped by frequently to check on us. We each ordered a combo, and was so excited to see the "show". I don't know if our chef was new or what, but he was so soft spoken and not very enthusiastic about what he was doing. I couldn't hear anything he was saying and even the train whistle that he blew was so quiet. I clapped and cheered in the beginning to get him going, but he wasn't really engaging, so I was really disappointed. It was so boring. To top that off, our "yakisoba" that came with our meal was linguini noodles. Seriously? Can you get any less authentic? If Panda Express can get Chow Mein noodles in Alaska, you can get yakisoba noodles in SoCal.

Delicious Soup

I have been coming here for over 10 yrs . Under new ownership, and I feel that it has a lot of improvements. The salad has a really good selection of different lettuce ( not just iceberg )Every bite of soup has tofu , mushroom and the onion I always order the combination steak and chicken with fried rice. Always delicious. I wish it had more veggies! When I was here, they had a samurai come around to the tables and say hello to everyone which I thought was a nice touch, especially if you had small children I think the exterior looks nice and I'm happy with new management will definitely be back and I do recommend this place.

What a treat! Came here for friend's son's bday. I've been to a hibachi but never like this. Menu is huge. Something for everyone. Many got the ribeye. One person got the lemon pepper chicken. I got the teriyaki steak. The fried rice was fantastic and they make a great miso soup. Really good quality meat and veggies. Generous portions. Chefs are fun and very talented. It's fun to watch them cook. Do yourself a favor and come.

The host gave us a 10 minute window to be seated. It turned into 30 minutes which meant I couldn't order off the happy hour menu. There were no parties in front of us to be seated. The menus had AI images on them, prices skyrocketed, and portions have been heavily cut. For reference, they're trying to charge $5 for a soda, tea, or hot green tea. That's literally insane and highway robbery. Service was bad as well. In addition to the crazy wait time before being seated, our food took a long time to get to our table. One person at our table got their food 10 minutes before the rest of us, resulting in his food getting cold before he could touch it. I expect a lot more from a restaurant that wants to charge $40 for a combination plate that used to cost $25. Food was so mid for the price and the wait time. Also they have dumb white table cloths now. Like that justifies the crazy price increase.

Enjoyed our lunch here today. The staff continue to be attentive and professional. The portions are generous. You have to choose between soup or salad for the combos. I especially appreciated the grilled vegetables that accompany the lunch entrees and combos (mushrooms, onions, zucchini, bell peppers). Not crowded on a Tuesday lunchtime, plenty of parking, and booth/table seating inside. Lots of natural lighting.

Good food and a good time. I'm a sucker for hibachi and this is my favorite place for it. They're awesome at taking special requests and accommodating people with food allergies (shellfish allergy for me ). Chefs always make it fun and the servers are so nice. It gets very busy on the weekends especially at dinner time so make reservations in advance. This is one of our go-to places for bday celebrations with the family. Such a fun spot. Til next time!

The Eel portions are large unlike other places!

Ask the Community - Shogun

Can you order sushi if you're at the teppan grill?

Yes you can

What is the lunch hours?

Hi! To my knowledge, lunch starts upon opening and ends at 3 PM. I frequent this location quite often so I'm 99% sure this is accurate information.

I have 2 adults and 4 kids plus an infant in our party. Total of 7, will you be able to accommodate all of us in one table or are you only able to have 6 per Covid guidelines?

I have a similar party size and have been accommodated for dine in at one table with no issue.

Do you sell you Teppan dipping sauces?

Yes they sell 16oz bottles as well and 2oz containers

Is there all you can eat sushi?

No Shogun doesn't have all you can eat. I'm not sure what restaurants are doing all you can eat due to COVID-19.

Are they doing teppan dining yet?

Yes

I'd really like to know if they are using butter, margarine, or butter flavored Crisco in their cooking?

Margarin

The restaurant may not have the most modern décor, but it has character and a lot of history. One of our servers has worked there for 14 years, which speaks volumes about the place. (I had used one in the past with no issues). A second waitress had come with the bill and then proceeded to point at the adress and phone number on my certificate and told me "Order must be over $60". Reading myself i didnt see that anywhere but thought id go home and check the website. No information on the rules of gift certificates. What started as a perfect evening was immediatley soured with the poor display and lack of communication. If the business wishes to continue handing out "gift certificates" I reccomend they print the rules on them.

Two years later, Kazama has become our go to sushi spot. My wife and I have been back more times than I can count and it's one of those places where we already know we're going to leave happy. The sushi is consistently fresh and delicious, the sauces are amazing, and the spicy garlic edamame is STILL one of my favorites. We've tried plenty of different rolls since that first visit and have found quite a few favorites along the way. The service has also continued to be friendly and welcoming every time we come in. We love the hole in the wall vibes this spot gives. I always think the best compliment you can give a restaurant is becoming a regular. We said we found our new favorite spot two years ago and Kazama has definitely earned that title. Still an easy 5 stars from us!

This sushi place has plenty of lunch specials and things to offer as well as an extensive menu. The menu can be seen by scanning the QR code on the table. Our server was attentive and helped us order. Due to time we ordered a couple of the lunch items. We got the tempura plate that comes with a shrimp tempura cali roll. The tempura was all very fresh, as was the roll that came with it. The other thing we got was the gyoza combo pate. That came with spicy tuna and Cali roll and some pieces or gyoza. The meal was served with miso soup. Because it was a date day we should have sat at the bar for more privacy. The tables are a little too close in my opinion so you can't have a private conversation. The place is tiny but the sushi was good enough tasting to where I'd go back for a lunch plate again. I'd also try their specialty rolls.

I saw that Yelp offers reservations and I booked a table for tomorrow for a celebratory dinner, with a memo asking if the teppan table was low enough for a wheelchair. I never received a response. I called to verify this question and they told me that there were no more teppan seats available. I couldn't understand what she was talking about, and I said I made a reservation online, and was told by here that I would have to sit at a regular table. WTF??? Apparently they have regular tables for you to order off the menu I think? And she never did answer my question if their teppan tables were wheelchair height. No apologies, just blamed Yelp for their reservation system and that I needed to make reservations weeks in advanced for a teppan table. This place needs to work with Yelp to figure out how to specify making reservations teppan vs. regular tables or just have people call and talk to a person to make reservations for a teppan table. Good thing I called otherwise I would've shown up for dinner tomorrow only to find out that I wouldn't have a seat at the table and disappoint my whole family. I ended up cancelling my reservation and making one at another teppan restaurant who did confirm they could accommodate a wheelchair.
