Terrible terrible customer service. I arrived at the store during business hours only to be turned away because Samantha closed the store an hour early. I explained how I just got off of work and saw that it was still open, but they wouldn't help me even though I knew exactly what I wanted. Why have business hours if you aren't going to abide by them? I chose this store because I read that it was a family run business, however after that encounter I will not be going back. Age discrimination or just horrible customer service? Either way, don't bother shopping at this store, especially if you're older than 50. I went in after reviewing their website to try on several pairs of shoes in advance of traveling internationally. The selection and pricing on line was good and the inventory appeared pretty good at this location - one my wife and I have made purchases at sporadically over the past several decades. Three staff were standing around the cash register, one appeared busy with a customer. None greeted or offered to help me. After about 5 minutes of looking at the shoes on display and hearing *every* other customer walk in with a greeting and an offer to help, I looked around and noticed each of the other customers appeared under the age 50. I'm pushing 70. Only when I began to leave did a staff person interact with me. They thanked me for coming in and asked if I had any questions. I replied that I did & came to buy shoes but couldn't get anyone to help me. No apology. No offer to help me. Just a "have a nice day." read more

My wife and I had a super great experience with store manager Jeff today! As a matter of fact, even though the store was quite busy, both sales associates were very personable, professional and engaging. In a bye gone era where excellent customer service and true salesmanship have been replaced of big box store, buy it now, mentality, it was so refreshing to meet someone who who knew how to quickly ask a few questions and suggest a different shoe and have it be a perfect fit in every way. We have not had such old school experience in a retail store in years. Great store, awesome manager and staff, wonderful products. We will be back. I went to this store today to try on a pair of sneakers I've been thinking about getting for a while. I asked a woman working there if I could try them on and told her I'm a size 7. At first she told me to just try on the one on display to see how it felt, when I asked if it was a 7 she said no it's an 8. I sensed some hostility. When she finally brought the size 7 for me I tried them on and she helped me decide if that was the right size for me which was nice. She had a really nasty attitude with me when she found out I wouldn't be buying the shoes today. I'm assuming she felt like acting that way because she assumed I was just going to order directly from the brand or something, because she mentioned how this is a local owned store. But the reality is that I didn't have enough money and I was just trying on shoes to buy for my next pay period. She definitely lost a customer when she turned her back quickly and gave me a snippy goodbye. It kind of stuck with me all day how she treated me and it really made me feel bad for not having a lot of money. All the best to her and the store but I won't be going back. read more

Great customer service! I had a pair of Birkenstocks that I bought here over 10 years ago that stretched and needed new holes on the straps. They did this free of charge and in under 5 minutes. They also buffered up the strap and got off some of the scuff marks. Thank you! read more

He listened to everything I was saying and found me not only great shoes but socks, foot roller, and a shoe protection spray. My only knock on Shoe Mill is that I have to walk through the Washington Square mall to get there. Walked in the door at the Shoe Mill just to browse for a pair of waterproof shoes. As I was walking around, Jeff, the sales manager ask me how I was doing today? I told him I was looking for a good pair of waterproof shoes for the upcoming rainy season. He shook my my hand, introduced himself and said, " I have the perfect shoes for you at only $40.00". Great experience at the Shoe Mill inside Washington square. I got a stress fracture on on my right foot from running. My orthopedic surgeon recommended going to the Shoe Mill to get shoes with a midfoot area that would not bend and have a lot of support. I had been in a fracture boot for a month and still was in one when i went to the Shoe Mill. Jeff, the manager, was so helpful. He worked with me for over 2 hours trying on shoes that both i had picked out and he recommended based off my injury and what my doc had recommended!! I ended up leaving with 3 pairs of great shoes. The customer service was astounding and the shoes are the most comfortable that i have ever boughten. Definitely worth the money!! read more

I will start by saying that the knowledge of the people employed by this company is one the best I've experienced in my 'shoe-buying' adventures. Jeff, an employee at the Washington Square site, gave exceptional service, despite the fact that in the end the 'shoe and size' he recommended was NOT a good "fit" (pun intended). He should have recommended an 11, EEEE size, instead of the EE. When I attempted to return the merchandise before leaving for NY last week, I had walked around my home for a few hours and realized that these shoes were still bothering a hammertoe issue of which he was aware. When I returned to the store to return the merchandise, I was greeted with, "I'm sorry, you can't return them since you've walked through the parking lot with them on." That came from another salesperson. What? Well, after further negotiation, she reconsidered that stance and decided that customer satisfaction was more important than arguing her point. I told her that I needed a wider shoe, preferably in the same brand... which of course was not even an option. So here's the clincher for me that this company still has some work to do if they want to continue to be recognized as a company that offers a variety of options while continuing to receive endorsements by doctors, orthopedic associations and even international retail shoe critics. Make sure that a person requiring a EEEE shoe can walk out of your store with a product from your supposed 'wide' (pardon the pun) range of offerings. The only size 11EEEE shoe that might work for me was at one of their stores located 20 miles away. Yes... only one option... only one pair of those dang size 11EEEE shoes in the entire metro area that might or might not work. To me it signaled that this chain's inventory was absolutely horrible! Now, they might argue that the holiday season was under way, but this was a couple of days before Thanksgiving. No excuse for a pittance of inventory. To make a long story longer, I arrived in NJ on Thanksgiving Day. The next day I drove five miles to a nearby New Balance Store. It took 20 minutes to find a size an 11EEEE that fit, and it included a 30 day policy if I discovered any issues. Now that I'm stuck with a $120 pair of shoes that I cannot wear, however, I will do the right thing... donate them to Goodwill. So, Shoe Mill, know that my only intent of this posting was to bring to your attention an area in which you've disappointed a potential life-long customer. You lost that opportunity by your inability to follow through on your company's claims. What I hope is that you re-evaluate how you deal with guarantees and inventory. It will serve you well to change your business model and approach regarding those two matters. read more

After a HORRIBLE experience at The Walking Company, I decided to go down the hall to Shoe Mill. Thank goodness I did! They were incredibly helpful and found me the best shoe they could for my needs. They also found a good deal for me so I wouldn't have to spend too much. I usually have an issue with shoe stores because I have large feet, but they went out of their way to make sure I got the shoe I needed, when I needed it. Absolutely 10/10. I will be returning for my future shoe purchases. (Which will be plentiful) read more

I have recently started shopping here for shoes as I need a special fit yet love fashionable but comfortable shoes. The staff are trained to fit the shoes to your feet. They have been extremely helpful & I am very happy to have contemporary footwear that feels great. They are still located in Washington Square but have conveniently moved to a different space with it's own exterior door & close parking. They are downstairs under the food court near Pottery Barn. I had to return a pair of shoes the other day because my feet just did not like them. I wore them around the house a few times to test them out. I have some unusual problem with one foot and I'm always careful to test out shoes before wearing outside. I looked around and found another pair to buy, that have since proved to be just fine. The salesman couldn't resist having a snarky remark about the return to another salesman. He didn't say it to me, but he was rude. I have now had two great experiences here. I went in looking for a pair of boots. The sales staff greeted me, made me feel super welcome and then left me alone. I was worried they would hover over me. Once I picked out a couple styles to try on, the woman that helped me was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. She told me about the two boots I had picked out and helped me with sizing. It was a simple, comfortable process. I wish I had gotten her name. My second experience (two days later) was even better! I went back in to get the water proof spray for the boots I had just purchased. One of the sales staff, Jeff noticed the pair of shoes I was wearing looked rather beat and scuffed. He asked if he could fix them up a bit for me, no charge. He recognized that I was wearing a quality shoe that "deserved some love". He asked me a couple times if I was in a hurry and genuinely did not want to take up my time but truly cared about taking care of my shoes. While he was working on my shoes, we chatted about the brand I was wearing (Keen) and our mutual love for this brand. I asked him if there were any great Keen's on sale and he brought out a plethora of options. I ended up buying a second pair of boots, that were my favorite brand and an incredible deal!! I will absolutely return to The Shoe Mill!! BTW -- their location in the mall changed. But they are still there and still awesome!! read more

Went in today simply asking for a gel metatarsal shoe insert , and all sales clerk had to say was yes we have or no we don't, Instead he tried to impress me with his "knowledge" of how I needed other products and how the gel doesn't work ect...Im a Physical Therapist , and know exactly what I need. It's irritating when a sales person can't just simply answer a question. They often think the customer is ignorant, but think again. Many times the customer is a doctor, nurse or like myself a PT. It wastes my time to have someone try and talk me into something I know far more about than they do!! read more

My husband and I went to this store because they carry brands we wear. These brands are good quality, comfortable, and supportive shoes. My husband hates to shop and he has difficult feet so his mood is not the best when approaching the task of looking for shoes. Jeff Lindburg was patient and helpful from beginning to end. The customer service at this store is the best I have experienced. Honestly. My husband was able to replace his favorite Birkenstock and SAS sandal. Jeff introduced him to the Joya walking shoe. I wear SAS shoes and needed a replacement . This store has a wide selection of SAS. I ended up with their new model walking shoe. My granddaughters were with us. Both girls have been wanting Ugg boots. Jeff patiently had them try on all the styles and sizes. Since this was to be a Christmas gift, Jeff quietly rang up this sale and held the purchase in the store until I could return at a later time when the girls were not with me. I visit Portland frequently to visit my family. Since a favorite shoe store in my hometown closed I will be returning to the Shoe Mill in Washington Square in the future for my shoe needs. They have all the brands I wear and the service was the best. True, the brands are pricey, but when you have difficult feet it is worth it. These shoes also last a long time. read more

I purchased a pair of insoles here and found out later that I could purchase them for 1/3rd less online. I do not mind a small premium for an actual store but this feels to me like gouging. I feel had especially as these insoles are nearly as expensive as a shoe. I was in a hurry and should have checked online. I will remember to do so. As for this store, never again. Had a wonderful experience with Aaron today. You can tell that he enjoys helping people. I came in wanting to try on some Ecco shoes. I told Aaron from the beginning that I had to talk to my wife before purchasing. I also let him know that I was concerned about the arch support of the Ecco. He took his time, put me on a machine that measured my arches for me, and got some shoes that really fit. Aaron really took his time, and earned my business, and I respect that. I actually went into the Tanasbourne location that is now closed, not Washington Sq but, I had exceptional service and wanted to share my experience! I went in to the show mill to just buy a foot lotion I had heard about for a few dollars, but ended up buying hundreds of dollars worth of shoes and orthotics because I was helped by Andrew Holmes and he was so knowledgeable about plantar fasciitis and really truly helped me! Andrew went all out to educate me on dealing with an incredibly painful issue I have been experiencing with my feet. I was about to take a vacation where I'd be walking a lot but couldn't find a shoe that I could go more then 2 mins in without pain. He explained all of the ends and out of plantar fasciitis and how to deal with it. Had me fitted for orthotics, the correct shoes and was so incredible friendly through the whole process. Andrew is an amazing salesperson and he really wants to educate his customers as well. Had anyone else been working I'm sure I would have just purchased the $5 lotion and been on my way. I love great customer service, but feel it's been lacking in the community lately. Andrew was professional, knowledgeable, friendly, quick and is definitely a five star salesman!!!! read more
