The food and the service here is excellent. Had my moms birthday here and everything from start to finish tasted delicious. The koobideh kebabs are so juicy and have so much flavor to them. Even the chicken kebabs were grilled to perfection. The hall upstairs is perfect for a birthday party or a little tea party. It is good for around 50 or so people. I do not think I have ever had such amazing experience at a Persian restaurant. Bravo! The only complaint i had was the floor in the hall bathroom was sticky? Nothing too special or anything that stuck out flavor wise and I also thought the chicken was a little dry. SALMON AND SALAD - I've been trying to avoid a lot of carbs so I decided to get all salad instead of rice. The salad was plain but the Salmon was pretty good. Nice and tender with a good seasoning on the fish. I was satisfied. Overall, the meal was okay. Nothing special and I don't really understand the hype about it because I've been to A LOT of Persian restaurants and this one doesn't really stand out. I noticed they put the small dish upside down on table when they set an empty table for new customers. No I couldn't use that plate set face down on that dirty table. I attended a private party here, so we did not eat in the main restaurant or patio, we were in the upstairs banquet area, just want to make that clear. We did not order off a menu, either, so I have no idea what is or is not on it. This review is basically for the food alone. I have never had Persian food before, really. I did once go to a Persian cafe in Beverly Hills, but that was about 7 million years ago, so I am not going to count that. The place was a little hard to find, for me, because I am like Mr. Magoo when I am driving in an area I don't normally drive around in (basically any city outside of Covina-San Dimas-LaVerne area) and it is right off busy Glendale Blvd. Parking is plentiful and in the BACK, so you should turn BEFORE you see the sign for the restaurant. The decor seems very 1984 to me, but it is clean and welcoming. There is a very large covered patio where other diners were enjoying heaping plates of rice and chicken. The interior is huge, bigger than it seems from the outside that's for sure. We were served many small tapas-like dishes as a first course. They were all delicious! There were dolmas (vegetarian), eggplant (is it called baba ganoush? Not sure- It looked unappetizing, brown and sludgey, but being a brave Yelp-warrior, tasted and was rewarded. I could make a meal of that on the warm pita), Tabbouleh, yogurt and cucumber with dill, a refreshing salad and marinated vegetables. Next up we had fried talapia filets, served with herbed rice. The rice was fantastic- I could taste dill, and I am not sure what else, but very herbal. The talapia, which normally I hate because I think it tastes like dirt, was light, non-fishy, and really yummy. Even my fish-hater daughter enjoyed it. Next was grilled chicken, saffron rice, grilled veg, and two types of a ground-meat-like patty shaped like a sausage. (I am realizing how ill-prepared I am to write this review, I don't know the names, sadly, I apologize!) This dish was less of a hit. The chicken was just OK, it was missing that grilled flavor and char, and the ground meat was gamey and salty. I preferred the other rice as well, this was a little bland, but I did enjoy the grilled vegetables, which were nicely charred. There was a LOT of food, very generous. The servers were pleasant. This was one of my favorite restaurants in the whole city, but I didn't get a chance to go there for long time, today I went with my cousin and my sister . We ordered salad shirazi , (the tomatoes were so old and soft, and they put that on the table without any lemon, or dressing at all, basically those smashed tomatoes and some cucumbers), we ordered mast o khiar. (KHIAR which means cucumber, was only in the name of that appetizer, not mixed in that yogurt , it was just yogurt and dill, and both came in much smaller portions, and much higher prices, than before. Then we ordered 2 Soltani, instead of 2 single portion they brought us one "big" portion, the amount of rice was just a little bit more than one portion and instead of 4 tomatoes we got only 3 tomatoes. And also the taste of meat was unpleasant. I know all that was because they made the kabab with cheap meat. They are trying to rip off the customer in any way possible. We came here recommended by family who hasn't been here in about 4 years and left completely disappointed. Service was definitely one star. We arrived 1015 on a Saturday and they close at 11. The man (I would not say gentleman because he definitely in not) who gave us our table did so as if he were forced. He informed us that they would close at 11 so he wouldn't be sure he could even get us a table. I said I know you closed at 11 because I called ahead earlier to make sure and was told to come in since we would be driving about an hour from our hotel for this restaurant. He huffed and should us a table right in front of blasting music as if it were an effort to make us leave. It was this or outside. We chose outside. The weather was perfect for it. Again more huffing. But he sat us down nonetheless and said a waiter would be coming to take our orders. The waiter came to take our orders for appetizer (Borani Eggplant) and drinks. The waiter was initially pleasant. He even brought the typical bread, butter, and plate of mint/onion/radishes but snapped to hurry our dinner order because of the time. 1025 at this point. Fine. My husband gave him the dinner order in less than a minute so the waiter could rush off. We start noticing more parties being sat down at their tables. They were treated just fine. No rush to order from the waiter for them! After about 15 minutes, our food comes and it looks as plain as possible. Mind you we ordered two kabob plates - one chicken (thighs) and one beef koobideh. The white rice did come topped with saffron rice but neither had any flavor at all. Hubby and I always share all the meat with each other so he gave me one of the beef koobideh and I gave him half of my chicken. Both were juicy but also flavorless. Ample tables could fit here without being too confined and crowded, 7 max! There is a dance floor and a small stage to Party the night away as well as a small Passage leading to the restrooms and an Outdoor Porch for those who need to blow out some smoke! Down below there is a restaurant, having not tried it, I could not give my review to what they serve downstairs, however, the spread they prepared for the event was fantastic especially the appetizer prior to the main course which is pretty hefty and generous serving of mediterranean dishes. My cousin rented a PRIVATE room to hold her father's FUNERAL luncheon informing the restaurant the guests would be arriving following services at the CEMETARY. Upon arrival, with a number of elderly guests with physical disabilities, though tables and chairs were ready, the waiters could have easily worked around the elderly sitting to rest after emotional and physically challenging day, the Shiraz employees made no accommodation for physically disabled elderly guests whatsoever. Compassion,consideration, simple human sympathy to help were utterly lacking. Robots could be programmed to mimic more compassion than the vile and despicable conduct displayed by a lead waiter and manager. What a way to make a hard day unnecessarily harder than to kick the new widow out until they set a plate. Yet, during the meal the waiters easily were able to clear dirty plates for clean ones. A business that only cares about money and has no human touch left, is a business that has seen its best days already. Perhaps if the owners hire a manager who understands they are in a service business and waiters who can read the room, they can prevent this downturn, but for now this business lost a loyal customer.
