We were passing through and read the reviews. The sushi chef greeted us with a hearty "Hello" as we came through the door. Great sushi and very reasonably priced. The restaurant had plenty of customers and yet we received good, fast service. We ordered four kinds of sushi--Tillamook Philly with fresh salmon,green onion and cream cheese, The Bend with spicy tuna mix, spicy mayo and unagi sauce, Super Crispy, their most popular, with tempura shrimp, crab, spicy tuna mix and unagi sauce, and Yummy with jalapeno fireball--jalapeno stuffed with spicy salmon mix and unagi sauce. It was fabulous. The only thing is that these are large two bite sushis, so it can get a bit messy. If we are ever in Bend again, we will definitely return. read more

Not great. We came in around 3:30pm for an early dinner. Our food seemed old like it was leftover from lunch. My tonkatsu was dry and very fast food like. Yuck. Our tuna sashimi was ok. Being a Seattle guy i was absolutely Blown away by the quality and freshness of the sushi here. Ordered the salmon and tuna donburi and it was amazing. The fish was expertly sliced to a perfect thickness and flesh pattern. This will be a must go if I'm ever back in Bend. read more

For Bend I would recommend this place. Product on plates did not let me down. Their 'dynamite' app (which came out last due to cooking) was one of the best things I've put in my mouth. Some of it did get over charred and a couple scallops were unedible, maybe next time could scoop out mistake, cover patch and hit with a torch? Service was great. We ordered Ramen and curry today. Curry is so so. Seriously to say it still has lots of space to improve. As to Ramen, we respond that the noodles taste like "instant noodles" actually it is really instant noodles. Although they didn't charge that Ramen finally, we cannot accept what reasons they explain. They told the Japanese Ramen noodles in the market tastes not good (so instant noodles will be better?). The worst is they mentioned there are some good dishes and not good dishes in each restaurant. They are good at Sushi. And we shall ask for their recommendation before ordering. read more

I am extremely disappointed with Shinsei. I recently started eating Sushi, and highly enjoyed it elsewhere- so was super excited to learn there was a Sushi bar not far from my work. Only to find out it was closed for renovations- fine, except the re-open date was set for the 15th, the 15th rolls around-- now it's extended to the next Wednesday (The 24th), the 24th rolls around- now the re-open date is the 27th. If that weren't enough to deter me- when they finally did re-open. I went in and the service is just ridiculous. I ordered two Alaskan rolls, which didn't take long at all- so that was good, but they came in the same container. I went back to the counter and everyone just blankly stared at me for a while before I said "sorry, this is for two people can I get two containers?" to which the girl behind the counter said nothing, took the bag and put them in separate containers. No "have a nice day" or anything when I left. Fast forward to today- last chance I'm giving this place. I show up to get another order to go, expecting the same time frame as before- order my food, pay- then I'm informed it's going to take 25 min... Wha?! ..For what? It's a to go order... it shouldn't take long at all. Again service is poor, everyone there looks like someone killed their hamster- except ONE of the chefs who was super welcoming and friendly. Also, the way the roll was cut was really strange, instead of between each type of fish (got the rainbow roll) it's cut with half and half on some- which is not my cup of tea, I'd like to eat them each separately. The "real" crab meat also tastes like something out of a can. I really don't think I'll be going there again. read more

Stopped on my way through town. I had been on the road for several hours and didn't want to eat something like McDonald's or gas station food so I found this on yelp. Called to place my order and found out the item I had wanted was not available. Had to call back once I looked at the menu again to decide what I wanted. Came in to pick up my orderand it was ready when I arrived which is always nice to have happen. As I paid for my order the young man running the till - I say that not is an old person but I someone that knows he was probably A teenager and at most barely 18, asked me if I wanted my change back... As a former waitress myself this was very offputting to be asked if I wanted my money back on A to go order. FYI you may want to tell your waitstaff to train the new guys on The etiquette behind being a receiver of tips. Food was substantial and adequate. I had ordered the miso and a side of vegetable tempura which had a good variety. I would stop again but hope they learn to update their webpage as well as update their staff. read more

Very unimpressive. Whoever decided on the sushi menu is in love with crab. Most rolls are just crab topped with something. I ordered a spicy tuna roll and some salmon nigiri (I know, boring selections but the menu didn't look all that good). I am not sure how they were able to remove all taste from their food but they succeeded. In other words, bland, bland, bland. Fresh ingredients and great service. What more can i say. It is conveniently located off highway 97 in the Cascades Village shopping mall. A great place to stop after a round of golf or skiing. We are big fans of Juno's Sushi but decided to try this place due to the reviews. I am embarrassed to say that this place is VERY equal, if sometimes not better, than Junos. We really like the fact that it is just 4 miles from us which is very handy for a quick trip in from our farm for a nice meal after dark. We are regular customers. This is good sushi, fish is fresh and rolls are well prepared. This price point would get you mind blowing sushi in many other places. Went here for lunch and costumer service was amazing. However the food was not good. I got a spicy tuna roll and shrimp tempura roll, my usual order at any sushi place. The spicy tuna was mostly rice, with some tuna and a weird chili paste. I had to dissect a roll to even find where the 'spicy' came from. No flavor, not good. The shrimp tempura was even worse.... completely soggy. No crunch, just soggy fried tempura. So disappointed for the amount of money I paid. read more

I don't take it lightly to say this: Worst place I have been for Sushi in the whole world ! I sat at the bar and the fish in the trays were in disarray / chaotic and not really yummy looking. So I thought to order some easy rolls to get started. After a very long wait, while I watched some guy sweeping the floor behind the bar and another one dancing around like a clown and acting goofy without doing anything except holding everyone up, I received something on a plate that I myself would not have the guts to serve to a guest.One should have been a shrimp tempura roll and one King California Hand Roll. What a nightmare. It looked like a kid made this. The first time. Unidentifiable. No taste of anything. I must say that the employees are the kind who should not be working in such a facility but maybe try their luck somewhere else. Wasabi and ginger on request ! And served in a way and amount that one can tell it was mixed together from previous orders ! Yuk. I planned to order several rolls but obviously quit after the two I already had received. The chop stick are getting used over and over again. I am sure they get washed but they do look very used. Not a good idea with wooden sticks. This place is a joke and their food prepared without any love, pride or respect for the customer. I don't understand how a place like this stays in business. A shame and total insult to the Japanese cuisine. Don't t do this to yourself, there are other places in Bend that might be worth a try. read more

Went to lunch early (11:30), took for ever for someone to seat us, or even look our way. Wait staff was not friendly in the least. No refills on water. Blonde gal who waited on us looked like she'd just rolled out of bed in her yoga pants. Food was not good at all. Salad tasted terrible, now do you mess up salad? Things didn't taste fresh at all.
