Stopped in on our way from Walla Walla to Redding. Must comment on the 'Poke Salad'. Probably one of the best salads I've ever had. Super refreshing and the dressing was light and more like a vinaigrette. Sliced cucumbers topped with seaweed salad, topped with those cute little orange masago eggs, and then some decent sized pieces of ahi poke. We also had the spicy soft shell crab roll, which was good but too much mayo. The eel/tuna roll, which was good. And the agedashi tofu, delish. First time here. The service was a bit slow but the sushi pieces were huge and very fresh! My reason for three stars is the Rainbow Roll. The description said it was "Topped with a variety of fish". The price is a bit high for what you get, but the food is delicious and cooked "or not cooked"...the food is prepared correctly every time. It is a favorite of mine when we are in a hurry for lunch. I had a great experience at this restaurant. I sat at the sushi bar and the customer service from Gabriel was outstanding. Food was good maybe presentation needs to improve but other than that I'll definitely be back. Those veggie rolls were so good, sweet potato in tempura mixed with avocados and cucumbers. Food is ok. Neither the best or worst sushi I've had. Only had a philly roll; but it tasted about the same as getting it at Whole Foods. Service wasn't overly friendly. It was all kinda just "meh". Rating is only for the food, not the service. The food here was definitely worth the visit being from out of town. What was really disappointing was the service. We were seated pretty quickly and had drinks served initially. Then it all went down hill from there......no one returned to ask if we needed refills on drinks etc. We ordered 3 bowls of udon and 3 sushi rolls to start. It took over 45 minutes to get the food with multiple inquiries around what was happening. This was on a weekday eve at around 6pm and not overwhelming odds customer wise. They felt bad when the bill came and provided a 10% discount but I would rather have been charged an extra 10% and gotten better service. If you decide to take a chance on Shinsei Sushi you won't be disappointed. Try to get there early before the crowd shows up and sit at the sushi bar. Have your fingers crossed that Rod, Kim or Gabriel is working Itamae (lead sushi chef). Remember that creating all those rolls and delicious FRESH sashimi takes time, so relax over some good Japanese beer or fantastic sake. I recommend the Chirashi don and the Bachelor roll. If you are visiting with a group try one of the big boats of fish, well laid out and oh so tasty. The fish is extremely fresh, the service is good and you will walk away sated and happy. Best Sushi in Bend. Oddly, I've only eaten there during the lunch hour but have never been disappointed. The staff at Shinsei does really well at accommodating large groups/orders. Let's be honest here: for $8 sushi rolls, I wasn't expecting much (by that, I mean I was looking for a step up from Fred Meyer sushi). Shinsei is my favorite Sushi place in Bend. It took us awhile to finally find a great Sushi restaurant and we finally did. Everything on the menu tastes fresh, which we had really been looking for. My last review on this restaurant was 6 yrs ago. Time flies they say. I picked a good time for a visit. They had just reopened after a major remodel. It wasn't 100% complete but it was 100% great. They added a full service cocktail bar which will be a nice addition. The joint was hoppin! We were seated fast and had a great table where we could see the whole place. Had a few appetizers and settled in for sushi. It was outstanding. The servers were great. Generally speaking, a shopping mall is not the best place to get sushi...unless you're in a major city in Asia. This place proves the point. The rolls I had here were poorly made. lousy knife work. Not a single slice was the same size. Rice was mushy. If you can't get the rice correct...all is lost. People always tell me they like this place because you get big portions. That's the worst way to judge a sushi place if all you worry about is filling up. And serving sushi on a wooden boat doesn't make it any better, it's just bad sushi served on a boat. We have eaten here three times. The kids bento box is GREAT and our son loves it. The kids bento box has 6 choices and you get to pick 2 of them and it comes with miso soup, edemame, and steamed rice. The food was good and the service was good as well. I stopped in here for a quick lunch sushi fix. I have to say I wasn't all that impressed except for the price and size of the sushi rolls. The standard rolls like spicy tuna and unagi rolls were between $5-$6 and specialty rolls were around $10. With that said the rice was off like it had been sitting around in the open air to long. The taste was ok but nothing to write home about. It's a good place to go if you don't want to sit in your car and eat store bought sushi on your lunch break. I would of given it 2 stars but the price and size brought it up to 2 1/2 stars but seeing as that wasn't an option 3 stars it is. read more
