Been coming here since I was a bachelor and they were located on Armitage. 3 kids later and the whole family still comes for special occasions. They are very reasonably priced but more importantly, everything is consistently great. Their sushi selection is great. We always get at least 2 spicy octopus rolls. And their Chinese is highest quality and contemporary. All of their waiters are friendly and they are very organized with the takeout process. We have probably had Shine 100 times and will continue to go for the foreseeable future. read more

Normally I stick with the BYOB sushi places in LP, but thought I'd give Shine down the street a try. I ate with a group of 5 and we LOVED every roll we ordered. While the sushi was great, the entree Pad Thai was just average. I'll definately be back, but only for the sushi! read more

I thought the sushi was really good here. I went with two friends and we brought a bottle of wine. I see that someone before me posted that it was a $10 corking fee... I only remember it being around $4 or so... moving on... My friend got a curry chicken stir fry dish which they really liked and my other friend and I split 3 rolls. We got the honey roll which I thought was awesome and then a dragon and a spider also. Everything was really good and we left completely satisfied. It less than $20/person and I will definitely come back here. Service was great and did not have to wait at all on a Friday night. Can't wait for it to get hot also because they have outdoor seating. Decent sushi in Lincoln Park. We made reservations for 5 people earlier on a Saturday and were able to get a table at 8pm. BYOB is still in effect, with a $5 corkage fee/wine bottle and $2/beer, which seems a little high to me, especially since so many other places DO NOT charge anything or have a minimal per person charge. The calamari was great and the rolls seemed fresh. I would not recommend the toro roll however, as the high price for the mediocre fish wasn't worth it. Nice atmosphere and good BYOB option for the area, but certainly not a "destination" spot for sushi. read more

I'm just starting to like sushi, so I'm a bit picky and hesitant in trying new places. I have a mixed review of Shine - the sushi is excellent, but the service wasn't. 4 of us split our checks into 2, and we decided to put the tip all on one of the checks. When picking up the completed receipts (before we even left the table), the server had the gall to ask where her tip was before even looking at all the receipts! Then, when the charge showed up on my credit card bill, I noticed the restaurant charged me an extra dollar. Too little to complain about. But then when I ordered delivery, their computer system showed a $2 delivery charge but I was charged $3 when my food was delivered. Needless to say, if this restaurant charges me a different amount the 3rd go-round, I won't be visiting again, regardless of how good the sushi is! read more

Came here with a friend the the other day. Had reservations and was promptly seated. Wait staff was very friendly, service was good - my glass of water never went past half empty. Ambience is nice if you are on a date. Outdoor seating looked nice but it was too hot out to enjoy. We had the house salad with ginger dressing. Its your average salad, dressing wasn't the creamy garlic dressing I was used to but it tasted ok. We ordered the 92, winter maki, and mangoku maki. The rolls are far better than any sushi buffet you can go to in the city and are on par with any decent sushi bar. The rolls could have been tighter, but the flavor combinations were original. I especially liked the mangoku roll for its sweet and spicy flavor. Solid place if you're looking for a go to place if you're in the neighborhood but I would also venture out to try other places. I ordered delivery from Shine last night. it was TERRIBLE. If I was at the restaurant I would have returned both dishes, My Tom Yom soup was the worst I have ever hard. The portion was small especially given that I paid extra to get a "Large". I also ordered Singapore Noodles that were inedible. Shine is the best Chinese place I have eaten at in the states. Not greasy, very fresh ingredients. I got the veggie egg rolls and Chinese soft noodles with vegetables. I enjoyed every bite and shall be back. read more

I went there with my girlfriend tonight and Overall, this place was ok, but we won't be going back. We had the groupon, which was $24 for $40 worth of sushi. The rolls were mediocre at best. We had the rainbow maki, Sapporo maki (eel was super thick pieces), winter maki (which was supposed to have jalepeño peppers, but they were definitely green pepper) and the flaming maki (which was actually quit delicious and pretty spicy). We ordered Moscow mules which were also mediocre at best. They were served in a piña colada glass instead of a copper mug. They were very heavy on the lime, light on the alcohol, and not mixed at all. If you drank through the straw, you got all lime, and if you drank from the top it was all ginger beer. Service was ok. Upon getting the check, I put the debit card down on the receipt and the server walked away and stood 10 feet away talking with another server for 10 minutes I had to ask her if she wanted to pick up the check or if I pay up front. Overall, it was ok, but if I were paying their full prices instead of the groupon deal I'd be pretty pissed!! We spent $40 so it wasn't terrible. But definitely won't return as there are much better sushi places for the money! read more

Went last night to give it another shot. I would not recommend this restaurant. Even though the service was nice, the food is horrible. I had the worst curry I've ever tasted. I came to this place for their off-menu Shanghai dishes, which just grow popularity and fame among the Chinese community. You have to contact them and pre-book what you want because you can't order on the spot. Those dishes are so well-done and are highly applauded. I have been eating at Shine Morida for several years. I love the honey roll and any of their daily speciality rolls. All of the fish is fresh and I have been told by a friend (and former waiter at Shine) that the kitchen is spotless. Love the decor. Yum! I went in for a late lunch with a group of friends. Our server was super sweet and our food came quickly. I got the Spicy Basil Leaves with veggies only and it was so flavorful yet not overly salty. Before my first visit to this restaurant, a friend recommend their authenticate Shanghai dishes, so we ordered several common famous dishes. This is called 私房菜and must be ordered a day or two in advance so the chef can prepare and show case the best of the food. Out of the 10+ dishes, only two taste close to home. RAW MEAT! YUCK. First, Shine use to give free crab rangoon with delivery. Now they don't. awesome. Second, and most importantly, SHINE DELIVERED RAW MEAT TO ME. And, to make matters even worse (or more amusing?), I called the resturant to make them aware of this disgusting meal. What was their response? No, they didn't offer to re-deliver. No, they didn't offer me my money back. No, they didn't offer to give me a house credit. They said: We don't beleive you. We will send our driver back to pick up the meat to show it to our chef. Absolutely love this restaurant. If you consider yourself a sushi aficionado you must go here. Great place to start with appetizers, try some specialty sushi roles and order one entree to split (they're large chinese dishes- enough for two.) Great, chic atmosphere. Great wine list. Great service. It's a must! Guys- Great place to take a girl out on a date, she'll be so impressed with your sophisticated style. I've walked by Shine many times and have been to the sister restaurant, Rise - I really liked that location. Unfortunately, Shine fell short on every level except service. The server was attentive, quick to help us make decisions, and made a few recommendations - I wouldn't consider it her fault that all the food just tasted funny. My date and I decided on sake - which was probably the high point of the meal. Sweet, but not too sweet and nice that they had varied hot and cold options. We shared seaweed salad and edamame - the salad was normal, tasted as it should but the edamame had a sweet tang and lacked salt in a major way. Oh well - I thought this wouldn't be a big deal because I was pumped for the sushi. We ordered a rainbow roll, spicy tuna, a vegetable roll and one more I cannot recall. ALL of these had a bizarrely sweet rice and the rainbow roll had tuna on the inside, it was opposite of everything I love about sushi. Needless to say, minus the generally appropriate service and good company, I don't think I'll be back to Shine. read more
