I got the salmon avocado roll, eel avocado roll, and salmon tempura roll. I love any place that does salmon tempura but all 3 rolls tasted great. The side salad wasn't anything special but let's be honest, that's not why you're ordering the set. The restaurant seemed clean and the hostess was great at handling all the pickup orders. Was not impressed. The staff were not helpful, and seemingly did the bare minimum. I needed to ask for water multiple times-- when the pitcher was right there; they could have left us the pitcher. The sushi was good, and the broiled cod was great at first (rich flavor, soft and chewy, excellent + no pain for braces), but I think I ended up having too much, and didn't feel totally good halfway through. Had a great dinner here with my friends last night! Super friendly staff who comes running when they see your hand up - helped each of us split the bill as well at the end. The duck spring rolls were flavorful but slightly on the dry side in my opinion - would recommend to try though because my friends enjoyed it! The food was good and wasn't too expensive either. The sushi for 2 had a basic assortment of sushi - nothing too special but was satisfying. This has become our go to sushi spot in this neighborhood. Have gotten food to go and also eaten in a few times and the service and food are always very good. The last time we went in it was totally empty. The service, as always, was attentive. Not too pushy to order or anything. We started with the butterfly shrimp which came out hot and crispy. Basically like a small portion of walnut shrimp without the walnuts, really delish. I also had the golden dragon roll which is one of my favorite rolls they do. In a sea of sushi spots in Manhattan it's hard to know what's what- and prices can def make or break your wallet. I would say this is on the more approachable end with low key vibes that would welcome you when you're in the mood for sushi without all of the frills and extra $ that come with other big name sushi spots in the city. Shima has a good amount of seating and unlike many NYC sushi places, the tables aren't situated where you are sitting right on top of each other. They also offer take-out. Shima has several different lunch combo options. I didn't opt to do a special today but I will definitely try a maki roll combo in the future. I started with a Kani salad which was delicious. For my main, I ordered two special rolls, the White Mermaid and Crazy Tuna and also a spicy scallop roll. Everything was delicious and it was plenty of food. I went there to get take away meal but next time would like to go for a proper sit down lunch. I ordered a set meal that included hot and sour soup, options for mains ( I ordered mixed vegetables in brown sauce and chicken) which comes with a side of rice and beverage included. I think it's a great deal for $13-14 in the city. They were generous with their portion size and the dishes tasted good and freshly made. There is a second floor of sorts where the sushi bar is. Tables are set with both chopsticks and a fork (so thankful for this since I can't use chopsticks to save my life). The best part of this place is that the lunch special is around $12 and includes an app, an entree, and a drink. I had the chicken teriyaki with edamame as my app along with a Diet Coke. The edamame was good but way too much for one person, the chicken was okay but on the small side. Overall still a decent deal especially for this part of Manhattan. Waitstaff is friendly and do not rush you out. I ordered the 3 roll lunch special and soup for $13 and I pretty much left still hungry. With that said, each piece was very small. Didn't quite love the texture of the spicy tuna. My friend ordered the roll lunch special and didn't quite find her spicy salmon to her liking. We mentioned it to the waitress and although they took it back, gave us kind of a hard time with it. I'm pretty sure she left hungry too. Won't be going back as the sushi servings are so small. Maybe the other dishes have a larger serving? In either case, plenty of places to go elsewhere. This is without a doubt my favorite sushi place in Midtown East! The food is fantastic! I usually don't like rolls but absolutely love them at Shima. Unlike some other restaurants, which use rice as filler, the rolls at this restaurant are filled with animal protein and veggies. The food is presented nicely and the prices are good, especially if you you're sharing food with friends/family. They always include free dessert (green tea or red bean ice cream), which is a nice perk. Their cold saki is fantastic too, and reasonably priced at around $14-$16 per bottle. Finally, Shima offers lunch specials that include soup/salad and are affordably priced.
