While visiting family in Arkansas from Florida, we stopped into Hawkins Variety Store and…read morehonestly...this place was just FUN. My absolute favorite thing in the store was the selection of hats -- especially the hilarious animal hats with ears that pop up and down when you squeeze the dangling paws. They were adorable little girls hats. I was thankful for my great-nephews because if I had great-nieces, we would have spent way more money in this store than intended LOL. Beyond the hats, they had a little bit of everything: old-school candy, toys, snacks, sandwiches, souvenirs, and Blue Bell Ice Cream. It definitely has that classic small-town variety store feel that's becoming harder and harder to find. One of our Arkansas family members treated us to ice cream, and mine was delicious. I went with strawberry in a waffle cone while my daughter chose cherry vanilla. One thing I found both funny and interesting -- all the cone options were the same price. The larger waffle cone cost the same as the smaller sugar cone, which means...obviously go big if you can because you can fit way more ice cream in it for the same cost. Cute little stop with personality, nostalgia, and some genuinely unique finds.

My wife and I were craving biscuits and gravy so we got online and found this place close to our cabin that said they have biscuits and gravy so we headed right over. We sat down and after about 10 minutes we placed our drink order, she got a water and I got a coffee and a water. About 10 minutes after that I was out of coffee and they came over for us to place our order. She ordered the 2 eggs with ham, and biscuits and gravy. And I ordered the western omelette with biscuits and gravy and a pancake. It took us about 20 minutes to get our food once we ordered, but 5 minutes after we ordered the table next to us got their food and we over heard the waitress tell them they ran out of biscuits and served them toast and gravy instead of biscuits. No one mentioned anything to us. By the time we finally got our food I was out of coffee and water and never received a refill of either. They set down our food and said we are out of biscuits and served us toast and gravy. The whole reason we came here was for biscuits and gravy and we didn't receive those. Also both of our breakfast items were supposed to come with breakfast cubes (home style potatoes) both of our plates were missing them. By the time we were finally able to flag someone down to ask about it, they brought them out to us once we were done eating everything else. Overall the food was not terrible, but the inattentive service and the substitution of the item we specifically came in for with out any notice was unacceptable. We will not be returning and will advise against anyone else going.

Right off the bat, their draft beer machine wasn't working, so we stuck with water and a soda. After being seated, there was a noticeable delay before our waitress came back. She explained she was dealing with an issue on another customer's credit card, which slowed things down. We started with the fried pickles. They were very good. Crispy, well-seasoned, and cooked right, but the portion felt a little light for an appetizer. For the main, we shared the Oklahoma country fried steak with mashed potatoes and white gravy. That was the highlight. The steak had a solid crust with good flavor, and everything on the plate was done right. No complaints there. Overall, the food was strong, especially the country fried steak, but the service and the draft beer situation held it back some. If they tighten that up, it'd be a much better experience.

The food is overpriced considering the meh quality, but clearly the owner knows tourist options are fairly limited due to the relative remoteness of the location in the area. Stick with camping food. Whatever you bring to town to cook in your cabin / Air B&B will probably be better than what they have here.

Food The quality here has dropped quite a bit since our last visit. Some of the produce on the salad bar was frozen. The croutons tasted bad, the tomatoes tasted like onions.
