While visiting family in Arkansas from Florida, we stopped into Hawkins Variety Store and honestly...this place was just FUN. My absolute favorite thing in the store was the selection of hats -- especially the hilarious animal hats with ears that pop up and down when you squeeze the dangling paws. They were adorable little girls hats. I was thankful for my great-nephews because if I had great-nieces, we would have spent way more money in this store than intended LOL. Beyond the hats, they had a little bit of everything: old-school candy, toys, snacks, sandwiches, souvenirs, and Blue Bell Ice Cream. It definitely has that classic small-town variety store feel that's becoming harder and harder to find. One of our Arkansas family members treated us to ice cream, and mine was delicious. I went with strawberry in a waffle cone while my daughter chose cherry vanilla. One thing I found both funny and interesting -- all the cone options were the same price. The larger waffle cone cost the same as the smaller sugar cone, which means...obviously go big if you can because you can fit way more ice cream in it for the same cost. Avoid at all costs. From the moment we ordered two sandwiches to the time they showed up was about 45 minutes. $24 for two badly made subs. Mine had the pickles I asked to be deleted and was the worst food I could have ever imagined. I watched in amazement as a group of teenage girls paid $3.50 each for a small single scoop of ice cream about as big as my thumb. Truly the worst Cuban sandwich I have ever had. read more

Neat small town place. All kinds of odds and ends for sale. Really old building. I loved going upstairs and looking at the architecture. They sell everything from kitchen utensils to swords. Little toys for kids. Candy and ice cream. The menu had some sandwiches. Can't remember what else. Three small four chair tables to eat at I believe. Overall it was a nice place. Service was ok. This is one of the one of the only places in town to get a good cup of custom coffee. They do get their own custom beans and they are pretty good too. The ow era are very nice and have a variety of home made sandwich offerings available as well. Definitely worth a stop if you are in town read more

What a cute store! This place advertised ice cream out front so my husband had to go in. There were cute tables to sit at and lots of fun stuff to take in on the shelves. Different food items and drinks were there plus plenty of gift ideas to take back. The clerk was very pleasant. We enjoyed talking to him too. I stayed in the small town a couple of days to have fun digging out at crater of diamonds. The town is truly small, but it has a small town Square in which the Hawkins Variety Store is located. I wasn't expecting much. But I did get a slice of apple pie. It's the best apple pie I've ever had in my life! Hands down, the most delicious. read more

My group and I visited Hawkins Variety Store after spending the morning at Crater Diamond State Park. It was the perfect place to rest and grab lunch! Hawkins has the perfect southern country market feel. The store sells old-time candy, trinkets and clothing. Food, beverages, and ice cream are also available. My group and I ordered three grilled cheese sandwiches and two hand-mixed sodas (raspberry and cherry). The hand-mixed sodas were similar to Italian sodas and full of flavor. The to-go cups were mostly ice though, so ask for light ice if you decide to try one! The grilled cheeses hit the spot. The two women working in the store were very friendly and helpful in answering questions we had about the menu. If I'm ever in the area again, I will definitely visit Hawkins! read more

My wife and I stopped in Hawkins after a morning of Diamond hunting and we're so glad we did. Great vibe inside and out. Kay took care of us and she made a fantastic breakfast sandwich for me and a chicken salad for my wife--both were excellent as was the cappuccino she made. We have been looking forward to coming here for a couple days as our last stop before leaving the area. We looked around the shops to walk off some of our lunch before coming for ice cream and snacks. They are not open on Sunday apparently. Facebook and Yelp both say "open now" and their hours say 11-5, but it is a bit after 3pm at the time of this posting and they're closed. read more

I'm from San Francisco and was very pleasantly surprised to find this little gem in Murphreesboro AR. It's in an adorable 100 year old building with charming decor. I just came In for a nail clipper and found they have an espresso maker, tasty ice cream, and Ghiaradelli chocolate! I even found Krave beef jerky here, which is the only kind I eat back in SF. It's delicious, sustainable and ethical. The owner was helpful and friendly and clearly has good taste. He also had a very nice younger man working for him as well who spoon scooped Ghiaradelli into my ice cream because they're pump hadn't arrived yet. The bathrooms were nice and clean too. read more

Hawkins might have been the only place to find an iced coffee in town- and it was really good. I wouldn't call this a "breakfast place" but more of a brunch, as they open at 10 (at least in late August). The food at Hawkins was excellent, though a bit slow from a New Englander's standpoint, but once you realize there really isn't a rush to anything you might be doing it just doesn't matter. I went in a few times, enjoyed the Chicken Salad and a ham and cheese melt. Honestly I would have spent more time there (particularly after dinner) and nabbed an ice cream but they seem to close early along with the rest of the town, which was a shame. read more

I had their Cuban sandwich, and it was delicious. My husband and kids loved their food also. If the kids like it, we are relieved!! Especially liked that everyone behind the counter was so conscientious about hand washing and cleanliness. Can't be too careful. Dwayne and Francie made us feel like family each time we visited this past weekend. They were so generous with our son, and there food was so delicious! DO NOT pass this place up as this is one of the friendliest places in town. You can get a real soda, root beer float, ice cream sundae, and delicious pastries that are hand-made each morning. This is in addition to their delicious jams, jellies, pickles, salsas, and snacks! Best pecan pie I've ever eaten. In a location that has almost nonexistent internet availability Hawkins had awesome wifi that they let us use. We could not make phone calls either, except via wifi, so it was a very valuable service for them to provide, and it was available outside the store at little tables they had set up. Delicious coffee, well everything they served was delicious. Unique items for sale in the store and the owner took the time to give us a history of the store and the area. read more
