When you've got a serious paint job pending, you can't trust Home Depot. Let's be real, the folks working in that department would just as soon sell you a half gallon of pure crap paint that isn't even going to color your walls (case in point: last year, we bought an inexpensive half gallon of dark red...five coats and tons of streaks later, we had to do a dark wash over it). When we walked into SW this weekend, after agonizing for a month over our color scheme (we are obsessive), we settled on a metallic gold for the dining room that comes right off of our living room, which we planned on making a metallic red. How does one do the metallic thing? You buy a special treatment. The guy working there knew his shit. He pointed us in the right direction of just what we needed and we walked out of there not too long after with just what we wanted. It was a breeze. Paint buying is never a breeze for me. I've gotta give credit where credit is due. The only caveat: I'd avoid buying your supplies here if you can. Blow your load on getting that high quality paint (SW is expensive especially for dark and metallic paints), and save money by buying brushes, rollers, tape, etc. at the hardware store.

Flash forward a bit and we're ready to get this thing painted, but first the never ending process of color swatches. This little store is easy to access next to Sunfresh (Unfresh?) in Westport. People are friendly and mix up color samples with the snap of a finger. Their paints are known for quality as well, so all good things. The only problem for me is that the little color card samples you get look almost NOTHING like the paint. It's probably about 75% accurate which isn't ideal when you're comparing ivory and bone and you feel like you should win something if you can find the difference in those versus eggshell and moonlight. Either way, my old man rant of color swatches is over because again the actual paint samples are what you need anyways and those are well-priced and easy to get.

So, we've been to two HD in two days, three times, Miriam once and Shawnee twice. We came to Shawnee to pick up nine pieces last night. Came back again today because the HD POS system is wonky and assigned the same sku to different products so they sold the wrong type of wood. Talking with a lumber employee, he tried to help but had to call his manager. Her reaction was, the inventory is mainly managed by the vendors, it could be different stock based on area, and a couple other excuses that I eventually tuned out. The end result was,"Sorry, we don't have what you're looking for." The end. Now we're on our way to another Home Depot that may or may not have what we're looking for. Why drive to find out? Because dealing with Home Depot on the phone causes worse aggravation than a field trip to Olathe.

When I Really Need a Hardware Store!…read more Living exactly one mile from a Home Depot it is pretty logical for me to head there when I need something for a home project. But when I really need something that is critical to finishing a project or a home emergency (like a specific size washer, actual plumbing supplies, or even the correct "bit" for my rotary tool) I go the extra mile to Westlake Ace Hardware. No, it is not a "home center" it is a "hardware" store! It shares a large parking lot in a strip mall on MO 291 North, across from the Lee's Summit Historic Cemetery. You are welcomed in through their large assortment of out door plants just outside of the door, and a serious selection of high quality grills and BBQ supplies, then the really "important" stuff lies behind that. Row after row of hardware! Not the prepackaged assortments of washers, screws, hinges, but individual washers, screws and hinges! Come on, do you really need a dozen 10 mm bolts or just one to get your back on the road? Or how about that spacer for your envisioned improvement to your lawn tractor? And then is the replacement rotary switch for your custom headboard going to be found in the plastic bagged parts of a normal home center? If there is any doubt, Westlake Ace Hardware usually has it, and staff that understands you pain and where to find the cure. From replacement door keys, to the proper paint brushes to use with the special paint you finally found for that perfect room color, Westlake has always come through with either what I needed or a recommendation for a replacement item that might work better or is lower in cost. I know that when I go there I am not looking for fancy packaging, but the "thing" I need. Westlake is my port-in-the storm, and sometimes my salvation when I am at a loss to finish that important project - and at a reasonable cost

The ground floor has kitchen pots and pans, appliances, cutlery, and dinnerware, while the upstairs floor is more focused on furniture shopping. I have visited this store numerous times and gotten gifts for a lot of friends as well - each one of my friends said that they are of good quality and are long lasting.
