This review is written as an observer at a distance given lack of access during the recovery process. Most info gained through family members who have had direct contact and my own research. This program and organization is unlike any other I've seen or heard of. While being very structured in many ways such as lack of outside communication for most of 11 months, this allows the individual to step out from under the burden upon them, long enough to make the personal changes needed. The facilities are excellent, and the needs of the participants are well met. Religion may not be your thing, but if accepting God into your life helps reduce the anxiety, or other inhibiting factors, why not? If participants learn to think about their actions prior to acting, they learn to avoid problems, and get help when they recognize it on the horizon. Those are much needed skills today. The support shepherds gate receives from all the churches in the tri-valley area is nothing short of amazing! It is evident by the volunteer support the organization receives. This program has attendees learning coping skills necessary to live functionally in today's world. They help them develop computer skills. They help them interview for and get employment. They have access to every resource from sponsors to doctors and therapists. Attendees of the program seem very positive. Some refuse to play by the rules and are removed from the program. In the end this is a free 11 month program. Not because insurance is covering it, they don't charge. Yes that's written correctly. This is a program that gives the time needed to move to a new lifestyle, and have stabilization. I can't imagine what this would cost otherwise. When it seems like everyone's got an angle to rob you blind, here is the purest form of love and support. I had my reservations given its structure. But the feedback is outstanding. read more

We go their Livermore location off Portola. (2) Donate. We usually give fresh fruit or vegetables we've grown (peaches, zucchini...) or canned food that is unexpired. (3) Download. My family and I are always extremely happy to support Shepherd's Gate. Simply put, they repair shattered lives of women and children who've suffered abuse and other hardships. As per their site, information about the fabulous services they offer, testimonials and volunteer opportunities are provided. Donations can also be made online. They have two local facilities; Livermore and Brentwood. Donations of goods can be made at the Livermore thrift shop. Donating and helping others is so rewarding and Shepherd's Gate is absolutely worthy of donations in the form of goods, money and people's time. Great program but... I wanted to volunteer for them but I looked at the application and all volunteers must recognize that Jesus Christ is Lord and you have to sign a paper about faith in Jesus and the Bible. I think thats great for people who believe that way but I don't. I think they would have more volunteers if they were open to everyone regardless of faith. read more

In 1995 (19 years old) I was badly beaten almost to the point of not being able to be recognized. I had to hide from this person. I was in Santa Cruz when my mom picked me up and took me to the little 2 story house that was called Shepherd's Gate. I was warmly welcomed by all the staff. I remember all of their names. I was in such a bad disposition that I needed a firm hand to guide me as well. I found all of these services at Shepherd's Gate. As it was in the past before SG had the apartments and all the services it has now, I was allowed to stay at SG for the duration of three weeks and then I would have to move on and find other services or help. Because the staff saw that I really wanted to make a change in my life, they decided that they would allow me to stay for 6 months until the program that I was transitioning into was available. So I stayed there and volunteered, gained a love for helping people and started receiving the donations, sorting, etc. I also started to help other guests that were newer to the program-with their lives. It was bittersweet leaving Shepherds Gate when it was my time to go to the next program I was transferred to; but I am so thankful that they believed in me when I did not believe in myself. All of the staff had a special part to play in my life and I am grateful to this day for that. Now, I am 38 years old, I've been married for 13 years in October. I am the Head teacher at a private Christian school and have been employed there for 8 years. I love Jesus and worship Him as the Head of my life and family.
