Shenanigan's came highly recommended so I was sorely disappointed by my experience there. I came with a group of friends for their 9-11pm happy hour, and honestly, it probably wasn't worth it. You could only order one drink at a time and they were fairly watered down. It also took forever to be served as there was only one bartender per bar, and it was disgustingly cramped and sweaty. Super fratty crowd, which might be your scene but it's certainly not mine. There are other spots in DC which may be a bit pricier but have a much cleaner and friendlier ambiance. read more

I visited here this past Saturday since I heard that they had a deal: $10 open bar for two hours from 9-11. That sounded almost too good to be true but it was true! Have you ever walked into a place and thought, "gosh, I feel really old"? To the left you have some guy basically swallowing a girl's face. To the right you have three dudes in a chugging contest. In front of you you've got several twenty-somethings grinding all over each other like a really bad middle school dance. (and, on that note, since when did grinding come back?!) Behind you are the stairs and your best instincts tell you "Damian, it's time to go." Ugh, to be a grown-up. But they have decent music, nice bartenders, a functioning, although questionable, bathroom and, best of all, cheap drinks. Pretty fun, I can dig those things. Shenanigans is, embarrassingly, one of my favorite bars in DC, but I love dive bars so this is my kind of place. Pros: -Really cheap drinks including $10 two hour open bar from 9-11 every Friday and Saturday. Then $1 rails from 11-11:30. -The staff is quick and are all really good guys. I have sat down and had interesting conversations with almost all of them. -They play really good music here. I am sure there are people that disagree with that, but you will know every word to every song they play, which is what I am looking for at an open bar on a Friday night. - The $1 tacos they offer on Thursdays and Fridays are definitely worth at least $1! - It is a dirty divey bar Cons: - It is a dirty divey bar, if you don't like that. -There isn't that many seating options, so I wouldn't plan on coming here with more than four people if you plan on having a sit down dinner. Also this isn't really a sit down dinner type of a place. -There is exactly one bartender who always works upstairs on Fridays and Saturdays (dark hair, goatee) that always seems to be in a bad mood. Every time I go I try to avoid him, but inevitably have to order at least one drink from him. He always seems annoyed to have to make a drink, or yell at you if you try to order more than one drink even when it is obviously for the person next to you (I understand there is a one drink per person rule), or give you a pitcher without any cups. A lot of small stuff, but just a bad attitude. Plus everyone else here is so laid back and nice I think it really makes him stand out. AMBIANCE: Irish shit on the walls - classic "purchased at World Market" themed items such as "No Irish need apply" type signs. I mean, close your eyes and think of that bar from Office Space where Jennifer Aniston worked. Got it? Ok, now picture it being smaller and not having Jennifer Aniston as your server. BEER: I suppose I can't blame them. It's a bar. It sells a substance that makes you drunk. The easiest thing an "Irish Bar" can do is add Guinness to the draft. - Check. They have weekly specials, so you can at least get drunk for relatively cheap. FOOD: The menu really doesn't need explaining - it's an Irish Car Bomb-sized explosion of crap. Quesadillas next to "Traditional Fish and Chips"? Clearly signs that the menu is limited only by the boundless imagination of the $8.00/hour Spanish-speaking chefs in the back of the house. Other than that, it's a fine bar. Go, drink. The staff is friendly and they have about as much space as any other bar in Adam's Morgan. Irish themed bar, which is always fun. Good music, weird decor. Terrible service. My friends and I were the only group in the entire place. There were 3 staff members on. Nobody moved a muscle to help us until we approached them after a few minutes. We all ordered 1 round- basic beers and mixed drinks. Bartender couldn't get it right and grumbled about splitting the tab. We ordered a couple food items, which were delicious. Great bar food. Took a while to get out. Probably won't be back. read more

Shenanigans is Shenanigans. Don't come here on a date. Don't bring your mother. Do come if you like drinking lots of alcohol for the lowest prices in Adams Morgan (I think?). HAPPY HOUR: Tough to beat 1 dollar tacos on Thursday and Friday evenings. Meat +grease + cheese + grease + hot sauce = a concoction worth...slightly more than a dollar, making this a great deal. Drinks include 8 dollar pitchers, domestics for 2-3 dollars, and a very small draft list. Again, don't suggest trying this place out with your coworkers, etc. Food in general is really cheap, though I haven't ventured past the tacos. You get what you pay for. FRI/SAT NIGHT: 10 dollar open bar (Bud Light and Rails) from 9-11 PM on Friday and Saturday is the best kept secret in DC. If, like me, you have a pulse and can drink 10 dollars worth of alcohol in 2 hours, it's tough to find a better pregame spot. No need to fight for drinks either - I came in a few minutes after 9 to meet a couple friends, and they were the only ones at the open bar. It's ridiculous. Drinks are pretty cheap afterwards too, 1 dollar drafts/rails from 11-1130, and then a "reverse happy hour" after 1:30 AM. Music is good, and the upstairs gets pretty bumping eventually. AMBIANCE/SERVICE: It's an Irish pub, so there's Irish stuff around, plenty of sports-playing TVs, which is key for me. Service is good, bartenders are generally cool - Mike and Gill are good guys, though the bartender who is usually upstairs is....not as good of a guy. Never friendly, once responsible for my card being overcharged. (Got 8 dollars worth of drinks...he told me he'd have to keep my card open because there's an (illegal) 15 dollar minimum that the other guys had never enforced...picked it up the next AM (oops) with 18 dollars charged to it. The definitive "pre-game" spot for the college students and a perfect place to start the night and get more than your money's worth in alcohol. For $10, you get a stamp on your hand and an "Open Bar" (with lots of restrictions) between 9pm-11pm. My group easily had about 5 rounds of gin&tonics/vodka-sodas, but the place is small and packed, and getting drinks can be quite difficult once the crowd rolls in. The environment is very much catered towards the college crowd, and fits in perfectly with the Adams Morgan vibe. Two stories, "chest-to-chest" (/JasonDerulo) packed, and lots of club-like energy. Also, the DJ here on a Friday night was awesome- don't know his name, but he took songs on request, and didn't ignore any as long as he had the song. I requested California Love by Tupac and it was on within 5 minutes. If you're hitting Adams Morgan for the night, stop by early, take full advantage of the Open Bar, and jam to your favorite songs before hitting the clubs. read more

I went here on a Saturday night with a group of friends even though I knew better (I'm actually a little bit embarrassed to even write a review). I was even more turned off when the bouncer didn't let in the three black men in front of us because he didn't like the look of their jeans or the bandanas that they were wearing. There isn't much Irish about this place and it isn't really a dive bar on a Saturday night, more like a really low grade dance club for the post college set. They had a happy hour which was all you can drink for $10 from 9-11 and then from 11:00-11:30 all rail drinks were $1 (which was better than the happy hour deal was). As you can imagine, the level of inebriation was really high. The place was really too crowded to dance and felt claustrophobic. The back room had a couple of college football games on. Drinks were cheap and nothing special. Music was well known dance hits. I'm just too old for this scene but they can have a second star for cheap drinks. read more

The Friday and Saturday 9pm-11pm $10 all you can drink deal is pretty sweet. Since it's quite sweet,expect many college kids rolling in around 10. Which means 9-10 is prime pregaming hour. After that it's hard to get a drink. They could use another bartender or two as it seems they're a tad understaffed at times. Could this be the second Madhatter in terms of nightlife? Maybe slightly more tame but similar crowds of raunchy and at times obnoxious college kids and 20-somethings come to grind on each other. Of course expect cheap drinks in small plastic cups to be spilt on you, (ladies) expect some bearded and weird dude to try to grind on you, and expect a strange mix of 90's pop and today's top 40. Good times can absolutely be had if you're merely looking for some casual (and alcohol-fueled) fun on a Friday night with people you don't give a damn about getting silly/trashed with. Spending the early part of the day in Adams Morgan for St. Patrick's Day. Stopped in Shenanigan's for some Irish culture. Had a Guinness Irish beer which was poured perfectly. The pub was crowded with mostly a younger drinking crowd which is good. A few of us somewhat older persons fit right in and we all sang some Irish songs which was fun. The Adams Morgan area of Northwest DC is a good stop on a Saturday with many choices of shops and eating/drinking establishments. I will visit again when in Adams Morgan. read more

Well, the drinks are really cheap, which is always a plus. They have a dance floor type area but the music wasn't really dance-able music, which meant everyone was kind of standing there awkwardly swaying. Not sure if it was just a bad night for music selection or if it is always like this. As it got later in the night (on Saturday), it became very obvious that this is a college bar. We got charged $15.40 for two yeunglings. I thought there was no way so we double checked with the bartender who insisted it was right. We were there Monday night for a comedy show and they'd advertised drink specials--there's no way a yeungling would be more than $7 right? So I checked online, and they list $3 domestic drafts on mondays. Either their website and verbal advertising are gross lies or their bartender stole from us. Seems like a nice hangout place, but the cover charge was $10 a person when we went. Granted, they say that drinks were free (certain ones) with that cover charge, which can count up and make some sense. However, I also got the feel that this bar is for a much younger crowd. You're looking at college-aged kids in this venue, which there's nothing wrong with that. Simply noting that I need to try out some other bars that hopefully have more diverse demographics. Also, the venue was a lot smaller than anticipated and got packed relatively quick. You had to plan when you were going to move anywhere. The pub might be nice for a younger crowd, but I'll take to looking for other recommendations. Still feeling out D.C. and best places to go. read more

Bar tender told me to "fuck off" after I asked for water. I needed water after drinking a few drinks throughout the night and when I asked to have a cup of water he told me repeatedly to "fuck off" and "move to the other side of the bar." I was very confused because he had easy access to water and myself and my friends clearly needed and asked for water. Every bar I have attended in the past has been quick to offer water when asked so I was extremely confused and frustrated when this bartender repeatedly and angrily refused. I would NOT SUGGEST in the future. The bar tender was extremely rude and combative throughout the night and when asked for water became extremely hostile. I will not go again and I suggest ALL WOMEN BE WARNED AND STAY AWAY as this bar tender clearly has no interest in keeping young women safe or hydrated. read more

I was in town visiting a friend who lives in DC and we stumbled upon this bar. We saw a sign for $10 open bar from 9-11 so we asked the bouncer to give us the run-down. He was so friendly and helpful. He told us exactly where to sit, what to expect and assured us that the bar would pick up around 10 (which it did). He told us that his name was Carlie. Well, Carlie turned out to be the highlight of our night. Later on, as we drunkenly thought our coats had been stolen, he reassured us that it had not happened and told us specific places to look. Sure enough, after looking around fora while, we found our coats in a safe spot on a table in the back of the bar. (Our new friends had saved them!) In addition to our experience with Carlie, we met a group of really fun and nice people, who we spent a few hours hanging out with. They have a $10 cover and then an open bar from 10-11, then do random shot deals like $1 tequila for 5 minutes or whatever. If you're looking for a fun night out in DC, Shenanigans is a great place to start! On Friday and Saturday from 9pm-11pm for $10 only, there are two levels of all open bar for rail drinks! The bartenders work at an impressively fast rate. This is ideal for college students +21. Even after 11pm, drinks are only $1 for a half hour! Some cons include overcrowding while trying to order a drink, especially in the final hour of the open bar special. This will require some patience. You may only have one drink in hand at a time, but this is actually ideal, as it will prevent the single ordering of so many drinks at once. Dancing space is rather small, and the last few times I feel like I have heard the same playlist of Top 40 hits, which is actually fine by me. Overall, if you're looking for a great place to start a night out on the town, Shenanigan's may be your place! read more

Most racist bar I have ever been to. I was quickly made to feel that my kind were not welcome. The bartender chose to serve everyone around me then go joke with his coworker before coming back and pointing at me like now what the hell do you want. At first I thought this guy must just really be bad at his job or maybe he just didn't see my 6'5 200 pound frame hard to believe because I'm usually the tallest guy in the room. Once he finally made my drink can you believe I still tipped this guy two dollars since he looked like the type to prejudge and assume that based on my race he wouldn't be getting one anyway. He just snatched the money out my hand and threw it in the tip bucket and turned to serve someone else no thank you no nothing. I went down stairs to rejoin my girlfriend but the poor service I received really left a bad taste in my mouth but after explaining what happened to my girlfriend she said she had to see this for herself. So after we finished our first round of Friday night open bar drinks which might I add sucked we went back upstairs for another round to see if I was wrong about this guy I always want to give the benefit of the doubt that maybe he really didn't see me. But low and behold he does the exact same thing again pointing at every white face around me promptly taking there orders as they walked up to the bar as I still waited to be noticed. Me being a bartender as well in Adams Morgan I now the worst thing you can do is to wave cash around and yell bartender to get noticed so I wait and wait some more for him to joke around and laugh with his coworker. My girlfriend had seen enough and she said lets get out of here. I paid for the open bar on a Friday night which was $10 all you can drink per person from 9 to 11 needless to say we had one round a piece at $10 just about the going rate for most cocktails in Adams Morgan so we didn't take to much of a loss but one thing for sure two things for certain we will never be returning to Shenanigans for another round of their racist bigoted shenanigans I urge people of color to take your money elsewhere we are not wanted or respected there. read more
