We were staying at the JW Marriott and we asked the bartender at the lobby bar where to go for good pizza. Lucky for us, he recommended Shelter, which was literally just around the corner. What an awesome find!
If we weren't looking for it, we would have walked right past it. The space isn't huge, but it was nice and quiet and our booth seats were cushy and comfy. And the food... OMG - it was all delicious.
I don't drink, but my husband enjoyed sampling some craft beers he'd never tried. I was happy with my personal bottle of TopoChico.
We started with the beef tartar - and while I have no clue what all of the ingredients were - it was hands down, one of the best we've had in Mexico.
For entrees, I had the Pappardelle and my husband had the pepperoni pizza. Now, our Spanish skills aren't great, but I know my husband should have recognized the word "funghi" - and since he hates mushrooms, he should have ordered it without or chosen a different options. When his pizza came out and he asked "what are those" - and our sweet waitress explained they were a type of mushroom - he was a sad panda. I was willing to pick them off and eat them myself, since I LOVE mushrooms - but the waitress insisted on having another pizza made without them.
We didn't mind the extra wait, as their playlist was stellar, the ambience was cool and we were fine just chilling. (Honestly, I think I Shazammed every other song they played).
When it was time to ask for "La cuenta" - we said we REALLY wanted to pay for both pizzas, since it was our mistake. We begged. We pleaded. But they insisted that no, we didn't need to pay extra. They just wanted to be sure we enjoyed our meal and the whole experience.
If you're in the neighborhood and you're looking for a chill place to enjoy a cocktail, a nice glass of wine and some delicious food, I highly encourage you to check Shelter out. 100% worth every peso!! read more
