La Chata is a Guadalajara staple right in the old town district near city center. I came here a while back with my now wife, and we loved the authentic Mexican flavors in each dish. We had cafe de olla and some dishes that made for an amazing brunch. We ordered a plate of Arrachera with tortillas and Bistec Encebollado (steak with onions) with beans. On the same plate we had chicharrones en salsa, a breakfast staple in this city. To balance the heavier dishes we had a Jugo Verde drink made from fresh pineapple and parsley. The staff were so friendly, we felt at home with the kind approach and nice ambiance. The decor is traditional and tasteful, we had such a fun experience. Our tour guide recommended this place which was walking distance from the hotel. When I got there, there were folks sitting on a bench at the entrance waiting for a table. Since I was one, I was seated immediately in a table for four. I ordered cheese quesadillas and a limeade. Wait staff are plentiful and walk back and forth between tables. The place gets packed. The quesadillas come with beans but they're cooked with lard. At no extra cost, the waiter was able to substitute the beans with steamed veggies. The food is delicious. read more

Food was amazing. Everything tasted home made with real and fresh ingredients. I got the caldo tlalpeño and it was amazing. The broth was clean and savory, and the chipotle added a nice flavor. The cheese with the vegetables was a great combo too. Also, get the beans!!!! This restaurant may have converted a non-bean eater into a bean LOVER! Delicious. Bit of a wait to get in (maybe 15-20 minutes) but well worth it. Once seated, service was quick and attentive. Prices are good, maybe a little high for the area but portions are large. I ordered the carne asada which was roughly $240 MXN. It came with rice, beans, potatoes, and a simple salad. Besides the salad, which was expectedly boring, everything was fabulous. The potatoes were seasoned to perfection, the beans and rice were nice complements to the meal, and the meat was heavenly. Just so tender and seasoned deliciously. There were four salsas on the table and all were fabulous. The red one (not the pico) has a bit of a kick to it. The green was my favorite. We stopped by here TWICE during our time in Guadalajara. Every meal was delicious. It is one of my favorite restaurants in all of Mexico. My favorite dish was the pozole con pollo. Amazing flavors and the soup was so comforting. The handmade tortillas are excellent, we ordered lengua and made lengua tacos with them. The line can be quite long but it moves quickly. La Chata, widely considered one of the best and oldest restaurants in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, offers a great take on the cuisine that is native to this part of Mexico. I want to start off by saying that I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that I was seated straight away once I walked in here. I expected there to be a wait since the last few times I had walked past here, this place was PACKED. I mean the line to get a table was down the street. Once I sat down, I realized how cramped the place was. You are practically elbow to elbow with the people sitting at other tables. You would think a restaurant like this would have a larger dining area considering the amounts of people trying to eat here on a daily basis. Most of the items on the menu are foods that are native and best eaten here in Jalisco. It ranges from tortas ahogadas, pozole, flautas, enchiladas, carne en su jugo and the list goes on. I had been told by locals that damn near everything on the menu is really good. I ended up ordering a Plato Jalisciense which comes with a sope, flauta, enchilada and some fried chicken breast with potato wedges. A little bit of everything. Though I will say it was nothing too extraordinary, I still found it to be a satisfying meal. It came with a lot of different flavors as they put different fillings and ingredients into each item of the plate. I enjoyed the sauce they used to garnish the enchilada and the bowls of salsa they brought to the table. I enjoyed using these to add flavor to the food. Not impressed. My pozole had huge chunks of hard pork that I couldn't eat. They gave me a knife, I guess they expect the customer to shred their own meat. My husband ordered chicken enchiladas and he got huge chunks of chicken instead of shredded chicken. He didn't like the sauce either. We had the sopes mixtos and they were soaked in sauce making the sopes super soggy. Maybe this is how food is served in Guadalajara but we didn't enjoy it. I'm a Californian and this was my first trip to Guadalajara. I came here w my friend for breakfast and ordered scrambled eggs with meat and chicharrones, beer, and coffee. Prices are affordable when you're rolling w USD, but it's not the cheapest place you can eat at, for sure. However, the inside is CUTE, the service was good, and the bathrooms are clean. Started with the tortas ahogadas oh my God, it was so fabulous and so tasty. The sauce was fabulous so for nachos they have these full tortillas. They have three different sauces. This super spicy sauce which I love. The green sauce, which is the mild and then this fresh salsa of tomatoes and onions and chilies, which is fabulous. The service is amazing. Then we did the mixed tacos which might be the best tacos I've ever had , and then we had this drink called Casuela. Wow. I would come back to Guadalajara just to visit. La Chata. Order the horchata if you like horchata! The floutas were perfect for my picky 11 yr old. The Torta Ahogadas are great for a tourist like myself, wanting to try one. We were able to order the torta ahogada with mild spice, which was good for our wimpy tastes, unable to handle the true spice of a true torta ahogada, lol. Very fun atmosphere! Excellent customer service. Fair prices. And so sweet to watch all the local diners and families enjoying an evening out. Obviously a destination for both locals and also special family dinners. A promise is a promise so I've returned to this spot to re-review after I couldn't get breakfast yesterday. The line was significantly shorter, thank you Monday, and the crowd was friendly. The same crew was working as the weekend, just not at such a feverish pace as the day prior. There wasn't a line but I still had to wait a few minutes before a table was available and I was able to be seated. I was promptly given a bread basket and some salsa options in the first picture I arrived around 9:50 and got seated 10:00 order at 10:01 and had my first bites by 10:07 not bad for being in a rush because I had to leave by 10:20 to be back at the hotel to leave by 10:30. Puedes escoger de pollo, puerco o de los dos. Los chile rellenos para chuparte los dedos. Siempre me llevo uno para llevar. El guacamole mi mero mole y barato. La arrachera con papas tiene un sabor que ni quieres terminar de comer recomiendo el platillo que viene con solo arrachera con papas. Cómo que la combinación que tiene la carne asada con la flauta la carne no está tan tiernita. El mole ay no delicioso las combinaciones todas se antojan. They're very friendly and will help if you have questions about the menu. The atmosphere is just a blast each time they usually have good music on in the evenings and if there's a soccer game count on it being on. The food I can't even begin to describe how perfect everything is. After a long flight our taxi driver recommended this spot and we've been happy customers ever since. Very well known for their good quality, clean, friendly and delicious food. Our group tried chicken pozole, quesadillas, Chile rellenos, mole, and carne asada. We were all pleased flavor is there. I always pay attn to the cooking area and after years of having meals here can vouch it's very clean. The cooks wear masks even post Covid and a white onesie to take even more precaution. The restaurant is clean, we came around six pm on a Thursday and didn't have to wait to be seated. I am picky with my jericallas (a dessert; it's like a custard). Their version was not it. When I started my research for Guadalajara, this restaurant always came up as a place to go eat. So, the first stop after dropping off my luggage was here. There was a line, but we only waited about 15 min. I wanted to order everything and I'm glad I didn't because their servings are huge. They start you off with salsa and tostadas/chalupa shells. Avoid filling up on these. I ordered the Queso fundido with mushrooms. It came with fresh corn tortillas. This gooey cheese was the perfect appetizer. I could have even made it my meal. My main dish were the Enchilada surtidas. Four enchiladas: one with cheese, one potato, one picadillo and one with beans. I'm used to enchiladas swimming in sauce. These were different. There was sauce on the tortilla, but otherwise dry. A little different, but still delicious. The plate came rice and potatoes. I washed everything down with sweet Horchata.
