An hour ago, I noticed a flat tire in the same shopping center as the Shell station. Without an appointment, I asked the mechanic, Brian, who was working on another car if he could look at it. He found a huge nail. Plugged it up, checked for more punctures, filled tire up with air, and checked all the other tires. Less than 15 minutes. Brian is my new hero, and I hope the owner acknowledges him for his competency, courtesy, and speed. read more

Zero stars, actually. My son bought a used car. I made an appointment for him to get it inspected at this place. I received FOUR confirmations of the appointment, two by text, two by email. He arrived for the appointment and was told they don't take appointments and couldn't do the inspection. I called them after he arrived back home and they confirmed what he told me. Went to day because the gas price was good. Service employee backed up a serviced car extremely close to my car, almost touching it without notice although I was there standing next to it pumping gas, and my two children were INSIDE my car. Me and the kids and another customer all believed he was going to bump into my car so I honked and the employee looked at me like I insulted him - young guy with a beard and a hat. Once he drove by my car I talked to him with a friendly voice and said "Sorry I honked but you know from there it really looked like you were gonna bump into my car". He did not even look at me although he could clearly hear every word I said. He ignored me on purpose and looked like I was just another b****. I rarely run into such rude attitude in this area. The other customer noticed an talked to me about it. I didn't want to make a scene in front of my kids but this was clearly a case of - at least - one more misogynist behavior. read more

I do Giant gas points and this location is closest to my home. I'm 100% aware that Giant and Shell experienced difficulties in redeeming points once gas dropped below $2.20 per gallon (maximum redemption) however, problem is solved when customers go inside versus entering their number at the pump. My husband went the week before Christmas and had huge difficulties in filling up; it wouldn't even turn the pump on. After swiping his card twice as credit and once as debit, even the associate was of no help. He left with no gas and we were left with not one, but TWO $85 holds on our bank card ($170 total) AND it redeemed our gas points!! Right before Christmas, we had to wait about three days to have the money put back into our account, even the bank couldn't release the hold. It was a nightmare to resolve this. I had to contact Giant corporate office who than told me I had to speak to Shell corporate. I was transferred and had a painfully long 11 minute phone conversation with a middle eastern man with broken English who ended up telling me there was nothing he could do and I had to contact Shell again. (Keep in mind I was out $170 and 4,400 gas points, so it wasn't a minor issue!) I called Giant back only to be told that a supervisor was only authorized to place that many points back on my card and they were at lunch and I would get a call back within an hour. They stuck to their word, I got a call back and got the points back. It was hoops of fire to jump through but it all worked itself out. read more

I dropped my car off to get a Maryland state inspection. When I got back, my car had been driven to their other location (without my consent) because their inspector was not working at that location. I realize that customer service is not an expectation when getting an inspection, but driving someone's car away without asking her is about the most unprofessional thing a garage can do. Here's a tip, call the customer if you plan to drive her car away. Absolutely do NOT recommend this Shell! read more

Their mechanics are some con artists. I took my 03 Honda Accord in for an inspection before I was going to sell it and they broke the radiator hose then shoved a screw in it and stuck it back in place. So we wouldn't notice then proceeded to tell the potential buyers that the car needed over $3,000 in repairs for ridiculous things. I didn't even notice the damage they had done until on the way home the car began to over heat at that point my boyfriend (who regularly works on my car) pointed out to me what they had done. I had no proof of what they had done and we had already left the shell. They really screwed me over. read more

I went to this service center to have a fuel pump diagnosed and repaired. The reason for this review is the criminal business practice of this repair center. I have been working in the auto repair business for over 10 years, I managed Milestone Exxon and I was a manager at Jiffy Lube. The ONLY reason why I used this shop because my insurance would not cover the towing cost to tow it to the shop I work at. Never the less, I have never I tried to charge more than the Mitchell Service hours for a repair because a customer had their own parts and neither does the dealerships. We all know dealerships and service centers make their money from marking up the prices on parts from the list cost. However, it is illegal to say you can change the labor hours on a work order because a customer had their own parts. This station believes they have a right to change the labor hours because I purchase my own fuel pump. Why would I pay double the price they quoted for the same part that only cost $119.00? Shell was attempting to charge $427.00 for the same part. I paid $332.50 for labor, although Mitchell Service guide stated it takes 1.5 to repair a fuel pump and .5 for testing and 1 hour for diagnostic test. The service writer tried to stated that it's 1.5 hours just to take the pump out, which is untrue. When Mitchell Service Manual gives service hours it takes into consideration what needs to be done to complete the work, which is why it has different hours if you have a skid plate under the gas tank. Trust me I know it didn't take an hour to diagnose the problem because I told the service writer on Saturday I think it was the fuel pump. Their labor rate is $95.00 an hour, which should have been 304$.00 The logic of this shop is twisted, because the service writer stated "We can charge more for labor because we are not making money on the parts". The shop is made its money from the labor, and it doesn't make it legal for them to charge more for labor because I wouldn't use their overpriced fuel pump. They didn't even provide a breakdown of the labor cost. The uneducated service writer who couldn't spell "guarantee" stated "No GARRANTY OWNER PARTS!!!." The service shop can never guarantee parts only the work because the parts are warranted by the maker of said parts. If you value honesty do not use this shop! If you value integrity do not use this shop. This service center is DISHONEST and CRIMINAL BUSINESS PRACTICES! read more

My wife went to this gas station and was treated very rudely by the cashier attendant for paying with change to the point that he told her to wait and shut up and then to leave if she didn't like it. We will never go to this shell station, he was working on a wed in the morning shift. I called the Manager and he said he had been talked to but this guy isn't made to work dealing with the public. Don't go to this place unless you want to get ripped off, and especially don't take your car here for inspection unless you want to magically have things wrong with your car that they want to fix for an overpriced amount. I should have read reviews because this isn't the first time something similar to this has happened at this shop on Google Reviews! I also feel completely taken advantage of because of being female at this service center. I serviced my car before a moving trip which included a replacement of my rear diff. Everything on my car is under warranty and the guys at the dealership could have at anything that needed to be replaced as they get paid labor hours even if my out of pocket is next to nothing. Everything was fine for inspection mechanically speaking said the guys at the dealership, but we didn't do the inspection there because it's way more expensive than other places here. (At least in TX and FL shops are consistent with their inspection prices, but not here!) I went to this Shell shop because it was convenient for the day, and have completely regretted my choice. The service advisor said my car failed inspection and would need wheel bearings on both rear tires completely replaced because of sounds heard through a stethoscope. They also said "something in rear diff broken making noise" when the rear diff is new as it was JUST REPLACED! I called my husband, who has worked servicing cars before we moved here, and he said, "Just leave, they're taking advantage of you because you're female and they know you need a passed inspection after moving here. Places like this will come up with things because they believe it's easy money for them as you already paid the inspection fee and they get more money from repair work and reinspection". I can't help it, but when I get taken advantage of my anger turns to tears so that's how I left the place. Husband checked things out and said all is fine and was so mad that they would try and take advantage of a female who doesn't know much about cars, as that's how all the pieces to this are falling. I called to tell them off after what they did and Tom, a service advisor, couldn't back up his shop inspector and said the fail was called by a state trooper WHO NEVER SAW/HEARD/TOUCHED MY CAR!!! Smells like lies all over the place here. Horrible service center, please save yourself time and money by avoiding the place at all costs. Guys like this give the car service industry a bad reputation. Edit to this: I went to a different MD state inspection place in Montgomery Village today after my husband took off my window tint and my car passed inspection - they never said anything about my wheel bearings needing to be replaced!!! I've been around the block with many mechanics over my life, ranging from car dealership middlemen to master mechanics at dedicated independent automotive shops to gasoline station mechanics. And while the majority have been a series of intertwined good, average and some not so good experiences, the posting of this kudos for Mr. John Kim at Germantown Shell Station has been long overdue. I live in Gaithersburg and have been going to Germantown Shell for around 5 years now and the experiences with this mechanic have been unparalleled in their consistency of great service. After being fed up with the overcharging and middle men of the car dealerships and other auto service stations, I was driven to finally search for a good mechanic. My wife discovered Mr. Kim at his gas station when she overhead him explaining carefully to a customer what their auto problem had been and using photos of the work and the parts that had been necessary to repair the issue. My wife relayed her impressions and we tried this mechanic on for size. We started with simple things, oil changes and scheduled maintenance, discovering Mr. Kim to have a good attitude, appropriate knowledge, and providing proof of work through photo documentation (a first in my experience). All good points, but being from NYC with a buyer beware ethos anyone worth their salt knows verifiable trends are more important than a single impression or a single bad outcome. As car problems arose I continued with Mr. Kim and researched his proposed repair work. His explanations hit the mark and never were there any padded work recommendations. With each oil change, air & cabin filter change, brake pad change, rotor job, head light problem, sensor problem, every check engine light, VSC light, bumper problem, flat tire, timing belt/water pump/cam & crank shaft seal/gaskets servicing or engine valve train job to name some, Mr. Kim took time to explain, update, photo document his steps and return parts exchanged on my vehicles. At each turn he would give me the heads up on a potential problem brewing and whether it could be addressed at a future date. He would allay me of things I thought to be problems that required no intervention. He followed up on problems until they were resolved even if they happened to re-rear their ugly head. Watching him interact in this way with me and with other customers only further reassured me of the choice I had made in coming to him. Five years now have passed and to date Mr. Kim has taken good care of my cars from the mundane service checks on through the occasional repair. This mechanic hits home with his genuine friendly disposition, his heavy Korean accent, his good attitude and attentiveness, his work ethic on job after job, and his explanation of problems and repairs through documentation, photos and websites. The warning lights have never fired other than to impress upon his genuine care for the vehicle, his standing as a great mechanic and a solid good guy. I highly recommend Mr. Kim. read more

Come here and you will get rip off, especially if you are not familiar with cars. My car was draining battery after I had changed the alternator. The battery was also new. I had checked the fuses. Doesn't have the tools to check the relays. Bought to this place since it was closest. The guy said to hook it up to the computer would cost $100 plus additional cost for any fixes. He knew that I can see right through his BS and started to explain that it take him 6 hours to diagnose the problem. At that point I was laughing inside. This guy must not be doing anything else that day since he will be standing next to my car for 6 hours. I went to another shop. They charged me $25 for the diagnostic, included in the fix for the total of $78. It was a relay as I suspected. Took less than an hour to fix. Don't come here. This place is dishonest. read more

Just went there to get an oil change. after leaving the facility, and driving less than 30 miles. My car dash lights lit up like xmas tree. Check engine, track off, vsc all came on at the same time. Called Kim and he asked me to bring it in. When I brought it in, he told me he will need to charge me 89 dollars to take a look and if there are other issues he would will charge me more. I taken my cars to other shops and if issues ever arise at least the would take a look at the car first before charging for anything. I mean its could easily of been someone knocking of some sensors or loose caps or anything. Kim was being very unprofessional and raising his voice and said I m the mechanic and the lights are not related to anything we did. I filed a compliant with Shell corp and they will be investigating. I will use all media available to let everyone know how irresponsible this shop operates especially under a big corporation like Shell. Btw, they are the most expensive in Germantown. read more

I have been going to this gas station for years! Kim, Tom, the mechanics and the nice people that work at the counter, are all great, all very professional at what they do! I have never had any issues with this gas station, they are honest, hard workers,will give you the most excellent service ever, in a timely manner. I've been a customer of Germantown Shell for over a year. In that time I've been consistently impressed with their work and the time Kim takes to completely explain their work. The prices they charge are significantly less that what I was being charged at dealership garages and I never once had the feeling I was being asked to pay for something I didn't need. In fact, there were several situations where they deferred doing work that they could easily have justified but wasn't necessary. Not sure where the one-star rater is coming from. Mr. Kim rocks!!! I was on my way to school one day when my car starts to do the scary white smoke and screeching noise thingy. Not knowing much about cars, I went to one place and the mechanic tells me I need to get my timing belt, water pump, and other parts changed because I'm about to lose my engine. Great! Just what I needed and on a student buget too. Well, not having the small fortune of $1450.00 with me at the time, I told the mechanic I'd return. I drove around with my smoking and crying car wondering when I would have to bury her, when I stop to get gas at Germantown Shell. There, Mr. Kim noticed my Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang. I tell him the problem and he convinced me to let him take a look. He told me my car wasn't gonna blow up and explained that the timing belt wasn't the problem because it is NOT supposed to be done at 62,000 miles. Turned out the screeching noises were the brake pads and the smoke was from some fluid from a leaky hose falling on the hot engine. He changed the brake pads and hose and I I never had anymore white smoke or noisy engine thingy's after. In fact, he's taken good care of my car ever since without breaking my bank. Not only did I come out ahead with over a $1000.00 saved but I also ended up with an honest mechanic. How do I know? It's now 30,000 miles later, my car hasn't had any car trouble since he's taken care of it and he just did my Honda Civic's timing belt. You rock Mr. Kim!!! read more
