We had dinner here our first night in town; even though it was late September, we rapidly learned that dinner reservations are required and can be hard to get at many places in Dingle. Fortunately, we were early enough that we were able to get in here. We saw many turned away shortly after we arrived. Heads up that they have signs pointing to two entrances for the restaurant, but the one on the left side of the building is the correct one. The sign on the right side of the building leads into the kitchen. Yes, we found this out the hard way! The menu features local fish and shellfish and they also serve some local beer and cider. I went with the monkfish and prawn curry and it was very good. The fish and prawns were sweet, flavorful and cooked perfectly and the curry didn't overpower them. The description said the curry also included vegetables, but other than a garnish, these seemed absent. Others in our group enjoyed their fish as well. They had sides of vegetables that weren't seasoned so I'd suggest coming here for the fish, which is what they do very well. As with many places, they were understaffed, but service was fine for our purposes. The atmosphere is casual and includes a fireplace that is likely lit in cooler weather as it did look like a true working fireplace. read more

Sheehy's Anchor Down serves fresh caught seafood daily. The atmosphere is cozy and the service is good but stiff and borderline unfriendly. It was not busy so we were seated as soon as we walked in. This is not the case during high season so make a reservation. Most of the restaurants in Ireland require you to walk up to the register to get your check and pay and this restaurant was no different. That takes some getting used to. We ordered calamari and mussels for appetizers. Both were very fresh and delicious. They came out of the kitchen piping hot about 20 minutes after we ordered. For entrees we decided on the fish & chips made with cod. The fish was thick cut and moist. It was coated in a tasty breading deep fried to perfection. You have to ask for tarter sauce if you want it. Prepare yourself for a look of disdain because evidently the server found this appalling. The husband and I did an early dinner around 5 PM. There wasn't another soul dining yet. I had the brill and scallop special, the husband had the John Dory special. Both dishes were excellent!! Saw the signs for best seafood and were so hungry so we walked in. There was one party and two other couples with plenty of open tables left but we were asked if we had a reservation. When we told them we did not, he simply shrugged and made it seem like it was so difficult to accommodate the two of us. Left us without any notice to go set up a table so we were awkwardly standing there to figure out if we were getting seated or not. Finally he came back and sat us at a table by the restroom even though there were plenty of other tables. We ordered oysters as a starter and it came with no silverware so we were un-shelling them with our fingers. I ordered the mussels and my husband got the salmon. He said it was nothing special, but enjoyed it. My mussels (dinner portion) were plenty to eat, all of them opened and none of them were missing meat. The chips are thick but we had to ask for condiments more than twice. It could be an American gesture, but we were never checked on by our server for the rest of the night and had to ask twice for our check. Service could certainly use improvement. Food was somewhat bland. They do have a Sheehy's food truck which I believe would've been better than dining in. read more

Had the food stand version of the restaurant which came with fun conversation with the cook. Got the calamari n chips. Huge pile of chips which are the most authentic chips I found in Dingle. Others were cut too long and thin restaurant style while these were thick hunks of potato. The only regret was the portion size of the calamari. read more

BEST SEAFOOD CHOWDER After a long day of driving around the Dingle Peninsula, we stopped in the picturesque town of Dingle for an early dinner. Surprisingly, we didn't see a lot of restaurants. Then we noticed this inconspicuous establishment, just off the main shopping street, halfway up an alley across from the harbor. It turned out to be a great find. It's owned by a local fishing family. We both had what must be the best seafood chowder in the county, if not the country. The mussels were also quite good. The waitress was friendly and prompt. And you couldn't beat the prices, especially in a town that is such a big tourist draw. Note: The restaurant is wheelchair-accessible. read more

Really a 4.5 We ended up here when the restaurant we were aiming for, Out of the Blue, was closed, and the folks there recommended Sheehy's Anchor Down. Seafood was fresh and delicious, made simply and well. Seafood chowder was great -- best of our trip. This establishment must be making plenty of Euros when they can turn away a party of five. We recently attempted to enjoy an early dinner, but were denied entry as we had a dual baby buggy in our company. The restaurant was fairly empty at five-thirty-five, but we were told that we had to take the 5-month-old twins out of the pram and leave it outside, even though it could easily fold and fit under the table. As anyone with a smidgen of cerebral mulch would know, trying to hold on to 2-five-month-old babies and enjoy a meal is practically impossible. There was a nice long, empty table in front of us, which looked ideal, but the opportunity to enjoy it, was denied, and thus, we were robbed of the enjoyment. The solution, we were advised, was to return at 9pm. Sadly, another local eating diner hits the Rejects List of 2017. One star is far too generous in this regard. New parents...take note! read more

Good food, worth the wait. Was extremely busy when we decided to stop in for dinner around 8:30. The food came out fast and we were very pleased. The seafood chowder to start was excellent and loaded with fresh fish. The Hake and scallops combo as well as the Fried Monkfish were both excellent choices for main courses. Excellent fish n chips. Total crap service. One server/hostess that couldn't manage the floor! Would have liked to not have spent an hour of our short visit to Dingle here. My friend and I popped into Sheehy's looking for a good chowder and we found it! The seafood chowder was amazing!! We shared that and the salmon which was served in a lemon garlic sauce and YUM is all I can say! The atmosphere was adorable, cute lighting and relatively quick service. I would have to agree with some of the other posts. Just two of us in our party; the staff seemed more annoyed than cared about service. They were very considerate and welcoming to their local clientele. Understandable, but they are in a tourist destination. Food was fine, but did not rise above anything else we've had elsewhere. It looked so cute and comfy but would recommend you go elsewhere. Service was excruciatingly slow, were not friendly' and were most often rude. We were going to leave after waiting so long to even get a menu and then forever to take our order. But after a long day of driving' we thought we'd smile our way through it and not let them get to us. All our other encounters at restaurants, cafes, and pubs in the last two weeks in Ireland have been wonderful. It was inevitable at some point we'd have a bad experience. read more

Arrived late in the day with no reservation and Dingle had a marathon that day so couldn't get a table in our top choices. One of the hostesses suggested Anchor Down as "they don't take reservations." But today they said they did, yet after 15 min wait they seated us. DH had a Guinness and I had a rose - no hard liquor served. We shared the calamari starter, and then had 2 specials. Monkfish deep fried, like fish N chips and 5 large scallops. All delicious. Interesting warm strawberries and cream for dessert. Service was pleasant. Overall a very good experience. read more

Had a nice fish and chips. The seafood chowder was disappointing. Lots of fish, but the broth was thin and not flavorful. Almost tasted watered down. Needed lots of salt and pepper to have any flavor, and even then not up to the standards I've had in many other places here in Ireland read more
