The only drawback is I had to rent a campsite for the day in order to get a fire blazing. Kind of sucked since I wasn't planning on spending the night. Oh well! It was all still worth it as I supported nature and TPWD. The hiking trails were challenging and invigorating. Thankfully they were also very clearly marked. They were a challenge with all the natural rock and rock cliffs. Penitentiary Hollow was the main attraction of the hike. Wow, Lake Mineral Wells rocks with awesomeness! Please camp here!

You can walk to it from Fort Richardson State Park as there's a paved walking trail next to it that passes through to go onto the lake. Included in the broader park are a playground, the walking trail, an historical marker, the city pool, a bathroom, trash cans, and lots of covered picnic tables. It's nice and clean and well-kept. We drive through jacksboro a lot and this is our first time finding it and I am thrilled. We will be coming here regularly

There are two trails- yellow and blue the blue makes a work around if the rock-steps are too difficult for one to navigate. The yellow trail focuses on western heritage and the blue trail focuses more on local history. It is a nice area for a picnic and is easily accessible. If you're looking for a nice nature walk but don't have a whole day to commit - this place is great! Making a small donation will help them make improvements for future projects.

We came in November, so the weather was really cool and comfortable. However, it had rained heavily the night before and the area where the fossils are was a mud pit. If you visit during warmer times, bring plenty of water as there isn't much shade.

This is a nice little place to escape to and it's free!…read more When you first get there it kind of looks like a hole in the ground, but once you get closer to the ground, the entire floor is "littered" with tiny fossils. You don't really need a shovel, just a bucket for all the fossils you find.

It seemed geared towards little kids. There were lots of arts & crafts for them to do, and some snacks. We stayed at Site #6, which was clean, level, and easy to access. The park itself is peaceful, well maintained, and full of history, with plenty of areas to explore and learn from. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the historic buildings added a unique touch to the visit. A great place to camp, hike, and experience a bit of Texas history -- we'll definitely be back!
