Another wonderful State Park. What I especially liked about this one was the Historic Site. I'm a huge fan of visiting the old western forts and this is another one I can tick off my list. They never look like what I imagine a western fort looked like from watching John Wayne movies. They are much larger and more open in person. As with most of them, the majority of the buildings are long gone. But there's enough to show the scale of things and as always a great map to help lay it out. In fact, I think almost every one I visit still has the hospital! Those things were BUILT. This one was almost fully furnished an pretty interesting.

Nice little park to walk around for the day. Lots of historic buildings and plaques to read. They give you several papers detailing the history, the trails, the camping sites and everything. They were very helpful. Nice trails to walk, decent little playground with picnic tables. The family had a good time hiking and having a picnic.

Fort Richardson State Park And Historic Site was a cool state park with the great stroll through the history of what happened at Fort Richardson with the National Guard in WWII who were from here and became POWs in Java. There are a few short hiking trails in the state park and then a 9-mile trail between the park the Lost Creek Reservoir. I would like to do this trek at some point. Friendly staff here and it wasn't too busy.

We came out here a couple of times for a day trip in celebration of my husband's upcoming birthday. That's right, I married a camper and all the things that go with that. My initial reaction to this park was that it was small for a state park and had limited fishing spots. From our first visit, I saw one stream and a very small lake near the park store where you check in. They have primitive, tent and cabin camping sites. The cabins range $40-45 a night and have heat/air and bunk beds. You provide your own linens and everything else. Tent camping starts at $20 a night. This location does a pretty good job with the spread out of the restrooms. They have plenty of picnic tables and a pavilion for grilling and coming for the day. On the second day, I realized that there was a satellite location only about 3 miles away off Bowie that is still part of the park. Lost Creek Reservoir has a substantial amount of fishing and about 10 sites. This discovery pushed it to 5 stars for me. The real draw to this location is the historical value and activities. Fort Richardson was in operation from 1867-1878. They have preserved the hospital, one of the barracks and officer quarters and still have the bakery and magazine standing. They have an introductory building with some displays and information and restrooms. At that point you can do a self guided tour or a walking tour. As far as prices go, I think park entry was $3 per person, but I am not positive. We have the annual park pass, so we get in free for us and anyone in our vehicle. However, that price is cheaper than other state parks. The state pass will also get you a discount on the second night of camping. There is a separate fee at the fort. There was a reenactment event going on this weekend and the fees were $1-$2 per person based on the activity that day. For example, on Friday they weren't doing the main battle, just a skirmish and firing the cannons on the hour. They had actors in period dress talking about various aspects of the era and vendors selling merchandise and concessions. On this day it was $1. On Saturday they were doing the main battle and so they charged $2. Overall a great deal for a family friendly activity. We enjoyed both of our trips out there and the staff was great. I also discovered it was a few blocks from Herd's Burgers so I no longer need any convincing to come out to Jacksboro. I do like that this park isn't as crowded as others despite its small size. A great place for a day trip with the option of fishing and camping as well. Check it out!

Fort Richardson has many great elements to make it a State Park worth visiting. If you are into history, Fort Richardson has lots of great stories in it. We arrived in time to enjoy the afternoon ranger guided tour which took you into most of the buildings on the property. The officers quarters and the hospital were well done and really gave you a sense of what it would have been like when the fort was active. This is where we spent most of our time during our visit. On the site, there is an old quarry that has turned into a stocked fishing hole. When we pulled in, you could see lots of action from the fish in the pond and there were a number of fishermen wetting their line. We toured the camping area and the campsites look like they would be a nice stay. Overall I was pretty impressed and would not mind camping here in the future.

Pretty nice little state park close to Fort Worth. There are only 4 full-hook up sites, very level but not very shady aren't pretty. The nicest sites are on the lower level near the creek, but would be tight to get into with a longer trailer. The path along the creek in Fall was a beautiful surprise!

We went to the primitive camping area. You park the car 0.6 miles from the camping, which it's a lot if you are carrying your tent and other heavy stuff, so try to travel light or make a few trips (1.2 miles round trip). The camping area was very clean, there are 2 fire rings and I think it can fit 15 tents. The closest restroom (no shower) it's 30 minutes away. We did the Prickly Pear trail and and it wasn't very excited.

We very much enjoyed our stay so much that we extended our stay. Beautiful trails - some easy some hard. A lot of geocaching which the kids loved! Staff is super friendly. The campsites towards the front are the best ones by rambling creek. We loved touring the Fort but the only downfall was we waited so that we could do the guided tour then while we were on the tour and into our first building, the tour guide was gone. We later caught up with her and she said there were too many people so she was just going to unlock the doors. The Nature Center was never unlocked which was a bummer because we were told it would be available to walk thru on Saturday before 4pm. It would be really cool if they did a night time guided tour. The kids playground area is beautiful! The bathrooms are well kept! We saw some deer and heard the coyotes at night. We will probably come back for the annual parade!

Great camp ground. Nice and quiet. Will return for the next holiday weekend. Some sites are not level.
