Oh, the joy of owning an old Jeep (now a quarter century old). Sprung a big transmission fluid leak when down in New Jersey on New Years Day. The AAA tow truck operator asked me where I wanted it to be towed, and I immediately said "Sharp Transmission." The dropped it off and put the key in the after hours slot. Next day,I called Milt and said, take a look and give me my options. No rush, I said, since I have other cars I can drive. Milt and his crew found some time to not only diagnose the problem (two rubbng hoses put a hole in one), but to repair the problem. Same day! I picked the car up this morning and it is working perfectly. Like I said before, if you are not taking your car to Sharp, you should start doing so. They are nice and helpful here and I think they do good work but prices are very high in my opinion. If you don't mind paying premium I think it's a good option and would recommend them but they quoted me near or even above dealer prices and somewhere around double the price to install a transmission over someone else in Kingston who also did a good job. They also recommended things that were perhaps needed but not well advised for a car with problems. This was also my fault. But in going elsewhere but buying parts myself I saved over $2000! In short they're good but charge way too much for someone on a budget. If money doesn't matter, support them like I did. read more

Went there for NY inspection of out my of state car(I've moved here). Failed inspection due to tinted windows. Told I'd have to remove tint on all six windows. Then, I would pass and pay a nominal fee. Found a place to remove tinted windows. The new place confirmed that only passenger and driver windows had to be done. In addition to that error, Sharp inputed wrong car which resulted resulted in double charge for inspection (by the second inspection shop.) read more

So, Sharp Transmission tells me my car is at risk of dying and I should get rid of it ("Get another car", he told me). I take it to the dealer and the dealer says, "No problem" - and then encourages me to spend nearly $2,000 on fixes, which I do. Only to find out within a couple months the dealer says my car is a danger and it will take another nearly $2,000 to fix. WTF???. I should have listened to Sharp Transmission. He went out of his way to help me. He was careful and prompt and since then I've taken my car to Sharp and been extremely satisfied. BTW, nothing to do with my transmission. I recently moved to Kingston and needed to find a place to take my car (Toyota Matrix). I'm one of those people who has always taken my car to the dealer, but this time I wanted to take it elsewhere to hopefully avoid getting gouged. So, I took my car to Sharp for an oil change and an overall check. There were certain things that the dealer had told me needed to be fixed, so I wanted Sharp to check these things and tell me if they truly did need to be addressed. When all was said and done, I got the oil change, a transmission flush, a new battery, and a new air filter for a price that I'm positive would have been about triple at the dealer. Also, they informed me that one of the things the dealer said needed to be fixed is not in need of repair. Milt was extremely courteous when I dropped off my car in the morning and when I picked it up in the afternoon (they finished about 3 hours earlier than scheduled, which was great). He went over the entire vehicle maintenance checklist with me and explained what had been checked, what had been fixed, and what would need to be fixed down the road. He even gave me a free pen to boot. My experience here was really great, and I will definitely return. I never felt like I was being sold things I don't need, which was a frequent experience at the dealer. I can safely say that my days at the dealer are done. read more

I have always dreaded needing to go to the mechanic. I know very little about cars, so I often feel unsure of how truthful mechanics are being with me, or belittled for my lack of knowledge. When I needed to find a local mechanic in the area I was impressed with Sharp's Yelp reviews and decided to give them a try. I have to say it was the most pleasant experience I have ever had with a mechanic. I got an appointment for the next day, and they completed the work very quickly. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. Milton explained things to me, without making me feel dumb - even in a situation where I most certainly should have known better. They completed what I needed done and did not pressure me to do anything more. In fact, one of the things I requested was clearly unnecessary, and they didn't do it, nor did they charge me for looking into it. When my local shop could not handle my car's transmission problem, I was advised to go to Sharp in Kingston. Milt had the car towed and called me with my options. After making an informed decision and giving Milt the OK, he began the work and called to give me bad news: the vehicle, 10 years old, had multiple additional problems. The cost to repair exceeded the value of the vehicle. Milt kept the car until I was able to get it hauled away, made a recommendation for a replacement vehicle and charged me a minimal charge for the work. How respectable. Six stars!!! read more

A few days ago, the pedal of my clutch began staying pressed to the floor, and luckily I was able to make it home from where I was. This left me with a major dilemma, as my old mechanic kept my car for about a month to fix something wrong with my cooling system on my last car. I couldn't possibly survive another month without my own car, so I looked to Yelp! to read some reviews of a different car shop I was going to have my car towed to. The shop I initially was going to go to had so-so reviews, and that's when I starting looking for somewhere to work on my car with more than a couple decent reviews. That's when I read the reviews for Sharp Transmission and I was very impressed with all the reviews I read. At the time of writing this review, I believe every review was a 5-star review with nothing but positive things to say about the speed and quality of their service. So I decided to have my 2010 Subaru Legacy w/ manual transmission brought to Sharp to have them take a look at it. I spoke with Milt on the phone before and after I had my car towed there, and from our first conversation I got a good feeling about how this positive my overall experience was going to be. He spoke to me in terms I didn't have to be a mechanic to understand, and always called and verified if I wanted to move forward with the repair before doing it. My car was brought in Monday late afternoon, and after having to drop the transmission and replace the clutch, flywheel and some other related parts. I decided not to rush the job and press for it to be done Tuesday night (the day after I brought it in), even though Milt said it would probably be done by then. Today is Wednesday and I picked my car up at 9 AM. Milt had taken a picture of the part that failed in my car next to a brand new part - something I thought was a real nice touch. It's always nice to be shown what was wrong instead of trusting what your mechanic says, especially when it is your first time dealing with a new shop. The price for the amount of labor done seemed very reasonable to me, and he used all OEM Subau Parts in the repair, not cheaper aftermarket parts to try and make a few extra bucks. As I was leaving, he let me know there may be a break in period on the new clutch, and what to expect when driving it. Overall, Sharp is what I would describe as an A+ repair shop. They provided me with a great service at a great price, and also very quickly as well considering everything that needed to be done. I highly recommend them to anyone who is tired of their old mechanic giving them the run around about fixing your car and/or overcharging you for the work done. Sharp is where I will be bringing my car from now on when it needs work done on it, as I know I will get the highest quality work done by friendly people at a great price! Went to see why my check light was on.Told me had to replace my oxygen sensor.They wanted to charge me 2 to 3 hundred,to fix the problem. Went home and a friend to check it out.He found a broken wire on the oxygen sensor. He put it together and light went out. I know,they had to see the broken wire. But that wanted to make that money. These guys truly deserve the 5-star rating- I re-activated my Yelp account to say so. I'm one of those people who doesn't know anything about cars so when mine started to make an unusual sound I got worried. Even more concerning was the fact that Mechanic Internet said it could be a Serious Problem. (You know, because the Internet is great at diagnosing diseases and car problems.) I went to Sharp because of the Yelp ratings, and honestly I would give them 6 stars if I could. They listened to me ramble about the sound and explained (in simple but not condescending terms) what it could be, then took a look. Well, it turned out to be a very small thing, not a Serious Problem, and they mentioned a part that might need replacement in the future but didn't try to pressure me into getting it today, which is a breath of fresh air. I think they might have charged me less than their normal labor rate, which I appreciate as a broke girl, but even if they had charged more it would have been worth every penny. These people are incredible! A friend and I had car trouble near Kingston at 4pm on the Friday afternoon before a long holiday weekend. We called a few mechanic shops but most wouldn't accept a car for service so late in the afternoon before a holiday weekend. When we called Sharp and explained our situation, they offered to stay late to help us even though they were packing up to go home when we called. They worked on our car for almost two hours without a single complaint, were very helpful in explaining the car's issues, and charged us a fair rate for all of their time. Is it possible to give these people 6 stars? I drove here from an hour away based on the yelp reviews and I wasn't disappointed. Never at one point did I feel like I was ever being talked down to. I feel like I should have paid Bill for a therapy session on top of the inspection that they did, he was so patient and listened to me hem and haw about what to do about the various situations I found myself in (should I park on the street, or will I get another ticket for this expired inspection sticker before I come in?). I also forgot my wallet, and they were willing to go ahead and start the job while I figured out how to pay for the services. They checked my oil and coolant without my asking. The whole time I was there people were coming in and out from the neighborhood and everyone seemed to know each other. Bill was even polite to a salesperson who came by trying to vend a phone product. This is a local place that should have the business of everyone in the area. It's that good. read more
