We went here on a recommendation from a friend who lives down here. Upon entering, there's a large room with a pool table, to the left is a 15 person bar and to the right a dance floor, room for a band and some more tables. Didn't walk any further into the restaurant but I could see a larger dining room back further.
Not a whole lot of people here for a Saturday night but I've heard it can get busy. We walked up to the bar and sat down. I realized I was sitting at someone's place, so I moved his chair over a little and squeezed another chair in so we could all sit together. He was outside, came back in and he wasn't very happy that I moved him. So I decided not to get into a fist fight first night here and we moved to the other side of the bar. Maybe the guy was just having a bad night.
The bartender, Luis, came over and apologized and took our drink order ... homemade margaritas which I heard were very good here. They're not huge but they're cheap and they're very, very tasty without the use of any premade mixes.
The menu changes daily and is written on a whiteboard behind the bar. I would strongly suggest ordering something different and not the standard Baja faire.
My friend ordered the Toscana Shrimp which is unusual since that's an Italian dish. But of course it was fantastic. My wife ordered the chili relleno and shrimp and I ordered steak and shrimp. All of the shrimp on our plates was very fresh and cooked just perfect. The chili relleno was pretty standard.. My steak was wrapped in bacon and appeared a little more rare than I liked but within a few minutes was perfectly medium rare, very tender and not dry at all. All of our meals included soup or salad. I got the tortilla soup which was pretty good but not out of this world.
The 5 piece band playing was all local regulars, mainly gringos, just having a good time. There was a little bit of dancing, singing, and joining in with the band with maracas. The whole ambiance felt like family and was very friendly.
The meals weren't huge portions but the food was very good and cooked with love. I'd rate the chili relleno a 7, my steak an 8 and the Toscana a 9. The place is quirky and has some character but it's a hole in the wall and a fun local establishment. As far as the price we had three complete meals and four margaritas for a total of $53. We left a $12 tip. We're going back again in two nights for magic night. read more
