Occasionally I veer off to see what another stylist might do, sometimes even staying with them for a couple of years -- but eventually I find my way back to Kelly's chair where I know I'll come out looking and feeling fabulous. Best salon I've ever been to. Lauren and Erica were amazing. I think every stylist, no matter who you get are talented, skilled and professional. I love to get my hair washed, but it was like a spa massage. I forgot the name of the young lady who did it, and I'm sorry for that. It's a super friendly and unpretentious experience in a beautiful old home that is tastefully designed to embrace the architectural details. Erica is an artist. Went for a pedicure for the second time with Jessica vasquez for the second time. She is very professional and does a great job. Had my hair done with Ann Mode. Excellent colorist and stylist . I came out of there ready for New Year celebration. Everyone is extremely nice and friendly, giving one the opportunity to relax, while enjoying professional and excellent beauty care. I have gone to Shapers for many years to have Kelly cut my hair. Needless to say, she and Sean are gifted haircutters and Shapers itself is beautiful. Today, however, I want to extol praises for Jessica who gave me the best pedicure I've ever had. The facility was private and separate and immaculate. I made an appointment at Shapers a few days before coming in. I let the receptionist on the phone know that i "wanted to go blonde". They replied, "so half head highlights?", to which I explained "no, fully blonde". They proceeded to book an appointment for later in the afternoon on an upcoming day, to which I was okay with. When I arrived the stylist greeted me confirming I wanted to do "blonde highlights", I said no, and explained how I wanted to go fully blonde. Seemingly stressed and a little annoyed, she let me know she only had 45 minutes but she would do the best she could. At this point I'd like to note that I have extremely thick hair, which she clearly took notice of. My first problem is why she would think 45 minutes is enough time to process anyone's full head, but accepted me regardless. During her rushed application of bleach on my hair there was confusion with other clients appointment times which made it clear they were having problems with receptionists not being clear or relaying correct information, which also makes me believe I was scheduled originally as a highlight appointment. Throughout my appointment the stylist, owner, and other employees made remarks about how thick my hair was and how this must have been the most hair she's ever done a full process on in her life. She also let me know I should really tell people in advance just how thick my hair is before making an appointment. This language made me feel extremely embarrassed and wrongful for have making my appointment in the first place. At the end I was left with extremely patchy, brassy hair. The under/back was close to platinum and the top/front was yellow. She tried for a long time to tone, however it was getting late and at that point we both wanted to go home. When paying I expressed concern about it feeling weird, to which she explained to just keep using the purple shampoo. I tipped her well (I thought) because the whole experience made me feel like I was inconveniencing her. Since I've been to a different salon to correct the color. They were horrified that anyone would treat a client in the way I was treated at Shapers. I will take blame in going through with the appointment when there was obvious hesitance to accept me, however I was starting a new job and wanted a fresh look, and only had a few days to do it before starting. I've had some time to think on it and I wish she would have just denied me when I came in. It seems like the right thing to do instead of taking the chance on the timing, because now I've spent more money to fix the rushed job and regret doing it all in the first place. read more

I've been going to Shapers since I was in HS. I'm now in grad school across the country. Even though I'm thousands of miles away, I still go to Shapers for my hair whenever I make it home. For at least the last four years, I've been working with Kelly. Kelly is always wonderful to work with. I never know what to do with my hair, so I let her play within some pretty loose constraints (ie: no bobs, no short bangs). No matter what, I'm always happy with how it ends up. And she's always taking the time to show me new styling techniques that compliment each cut! I love going to Shapers. I always leave feeling my best; my haircut is always worth every penny. Jessica, the woman who does nails at Shapers, is also wonderful! My nails are really brittle and I tend to pick at them when they chip, so they're always a mess when I go see her. She's willing to take the time to make even my short nails look amazing! Now, because both of these great women tend to take the time to do their jobs right, there is sometimes a wait. As long as you factor that in or get an earlier appointment, it's worth it. Everyone I know at Shapers is great at their job. My only complaint is that they are in New Paltz and not out here in CA! read more

The most wonderful salon that side of the Hudson! Sean (owner and stylist) is amazing, seriously. Friendly staff from beginning to end, you want to stay and talk even after your service! Erin at the front desk is a beautiful curly haired red head that will take care of you from the welcoming smile when you walk in the door to the always attentive reminder that you can put a tip on your card if need be at the end. The assistants are friendly and wonderful conversationalists, at the same time they are generously massaging your head and checking on the temperature of the water. The atmosphere is also excellent! The parking is usually perfect, accommodating just the right amount of cars for the amount of people inside. If the adorable tree house feel doesn't get you excited the plush couches in the waiting room, or maybe the pristine bathroom would do it? Each station is a comfortable distance from one another and have adorable mosaic tile accents :) And beyond that, everyone's always taking to everyone! Friendly and genuinely interested in what everyone's saying! Now to rave about Sean.... he is the quintessential best friend stylist. A gorgeous married man who does hair?! It's true! He not only DOES hair, he UNDERSTANDS hair! It's an all Aveda salon, so nothin' but natural. The products feel wonderful, and smell even better. I'm almost 33 and I've been getting highlights and lowlights in my hair since I was 14! I'm beyoooooond picky! Even my best friend who's a hairdresser won't do my hair because she's so scared to screw it up knowing how specific I am with what I want. Kelly is amazing! I love my silver hair, and not once did she recommend "covering it ", instead praised me for letting it grow out. She gave me a bouncy haircut that suits my sorta/kinda wavy hair, and showed me how to style it so I don't have the next day regrets. We then both decided a little shorter would be better. She recut my hair, and styled it again. I feel fresh, happy, and ready for my vacation! Lots of sunlight and laughter and professionalism at Shapers. I recently saw Kelly for a hair cut and I just have to say- she is an absolute artist! I came in with very long, pin-straight hair that was several months grown out, shapeless, and full of split ends (I swear, I don't enjoy torturing stylists!). Kelly was very patient and clearly knowledgeable, as we looked over a few pictures and discussed my options for something flattering and stylish, keeping the length I wanted, while getting rid of all the ratty stuff. I don't think my hair has EVER looked this GOOD. I will never again let my cut grow out beyond recognition! I saw Kelly a couple days ago for a haircut. I have tricky wavy hair, and my experience with haircuts for that reason is not usually all that great--most often it takes a couple weeks for my hair to "recover." But Kelly knew exactly what to do in order to make my hair look great right away, and today I could just spritz and go. That almost never happens! Until I started going to Shapers, I would wander into any random salon and ask them to just cut it short. I usually ended up with a sort of style-free boy cut. To maintain the look, I would cut little bits off with mustache scissors. When I finally decided to try for a decent haircut, I ended up at Shapers and never looked back. Kelly looked a little pained when I told her I was a self trimmer who went anywhere for a cut (a cut slut, she called me!) but she went on to give me a haircut that actually generates compliments. I had recently received a gift card to Shapers and was eager to have my hair cut (it had been almost a year since I had even a trim.) When I made the appointment, my hair was long and the cut was basic, with very little to no style element. My hair has always been manageable, but I was looking for a change in pace and was unsure of exactly what I wanted. After my hair had been washed, I spoke to Anne about what I hoped for. I asked that she style it in whatever fashion she felt would look good and the only guidelines I gave her were to keep my hair close to shoulder length. I live in Brooklyn, and I've got a place to go where I'm generally very happy with the results. But when I've got a trip upstate planned, I try and time it so I can get my hair cut by Sean at Shapers. He's always done a terrific job with my hair over the years, regardless of whatever whimsy brought me in there in the first place. Sean's also just a great dude, and I always look forward to catching up with him. Everyone who works there is upbeat and positive, and that vibe carries over to the customers. I am so glad I gave Shapers a try! Everyone was very friendly (especially the woman who shampooed me) & it is a cute place. Ali was a wonderful stylist. She actually listened to what I wanted and I walked out with a very simple & beautiful color that I am SO happy with! I'm used to being disappointed or at the very least not completely satisfied when I leave a salon, so this was a really pleasant surprise. I am also used to paying more than $65 for highlights & lowlights, so that was an added bonus. I have tried almost all of the salons in New Paltz, & I have consistently paid the same amount or more for a less-than-lovely look, until I tried Shapers. This is the first time I've ever felt the need to write a negative review. I waited almost an hour. They mistakenly washed my hair before sitting with the hairdresser. This didn't allow me to review what was going on with my hair. (This was my second appointment) I brought a picture with me, for both appointments, which we were working toward . I understood it was a work in progress. We discussed what didn't need to be cut. She cut exactly where we had discussed not cutting. The blowdry hid what went wrong and I didn't see what happened until I got home. One side of my head was about 4 inches shorter than the other. When I went to the next hairdresser 4 weeks later, she said "It looks like two completely different hairstyles on each side of your head. " In order to fix this I ended up with a really short cut, exactly what I didn't want. read more

After my previously horrible experience at Shapers (about a year ago), my usual stylist returned from her vaca and I told her how I was disappointed with the last color and cut, and that I had gotten the cut about 3-4 weeks prior, but needed a cut again. Lenore was sympathetic towards my bad experience, while not throwing the other stylist under the bus. She was totally professional an pleasant to be around as always. Going to get my hair done is not only about a cut and color, but it is also about taking care of myself. I am a clinician, and at the time, was working at a very difficult job. Going in to see Lenore to get a cut and color was always something I looked forward to. She was genuinely invested in me and what I wanted, and was a great conversationalist. Lenore was not only a great stylist, she was also a great friend. I would recommend Lenore to anyone (in fact I have referred 3 friends/co-workers to her). I would continue going to Shapers in the future, but I recently moved out of state. Maybe when I am home visiting I'll make an appointment to go up to New Paltz and pay Shapers a visit :) read more

Went to shapers for a with 4 girls for a special occasion, they were extremly rude and unaccomodating. Waited over an hour to be seen to find out they not only lost one of our girls appointments but didn't have time to wash cut and style like we asked and only had to time to do so so styles and everything came out messy and rushed, there were no apologies made either. I came in today with a head full of dreads, worried I wouldn't be able to get the hairstyle and length I had wanted- however, Kelly went above and beyond my expectations with my hair. I showed her a picture of what I wanted my hair to look like, assuming my dreads would have to be cut super short. Kelly cut out my dreads exactly how I had wanted, which left me with a lot more length than I thought I would have. She then cut my hair literally exactly like the reference picture I had shown her, leaving me very very happy and feeling very confident. I never write reviews and certainly not for hair salons (I have only ever had extremely horrible experiences with my hair). However, I am breaking my own rule to praise Lenore for my incredible hair transformation! Lenore, you are an extremely talented woman. I have been going to expensive salons my whole life, have spent more on my hair than I've spent on food, and every time, it has been a disaster. I am always firm and direct (but not bitchy!) in what I like and do not like. And yet, stylists seem to find the thing I hate and fear most and run with it. And because of my past experiences, I always go into salons shaking and clenching my jaw. Lenore immediately noticed and told me it was all gonna be okay. And it was. I was definitely apprehensive at first, but DAMN! If this isn't the greatest hair color I've ever had! She took my fried-out accidental ombre (dark ash blonde natural roots with bleach blonde ends) and transformed my hair into the most gorgeous, healthy, natural color I've only ever seen achieved on women who have never dyed their hair before. I have no idea how you melded those two opposing colors together. It is absolutely seamless. I wish I could post before and after photos. Anyways, thank you Lenore. You need to go to Manhattan and teach those bitches a lesson. You are the best in the biz and I don't know how to thank you enough. read more
